Their voices were quite different and James' voice fits Metallica's music very well. The same comes to Dave and Megadeth! I also think that James wouldn't be good singer for Megadeth. Personally I can't answer your question cause I really like both vocalists.

3. Cognition (162) | 1 year ago | As mentioned, they have quite different voices and their voices do seem to fit their respectable bands quite well. However, I wouldn't hesitate a second before saying I think Hetfield had the best voice. It was strong and powerful, yet he was able to sing with a softer voice with his masculinity intact, as in "Nothing Else Matters". Notice that I'm writing in the past tense. Since "St.Anger" I haven't heard any convincing performances by Hetfield at all. Mustaine's voice, on the other hand, seems to stay in shape. Mustaine never had the power and width that Hetfield had in his voice, but his voice has always worked for Megadeth. I think his voice is one of the main characteristics of the Megadeth sound.

Metallideth (355) | 1 year ago | I agree. I like Hetfield's voice more, but Mustaine's is pretty cool and works well in Megadeth. I think part of why Hetfield's voice is so much "cleaner" live, especially recently, than in the studio is because he sings that way on purpose. I think he's probably still capable of that growl of his that everyone loves, but it puts more strain on his voice and he probably can't keep it up for real long anymore. That's just conjecture, of course, but I bet he still can when he wants to. He did take vocal lessons after the black album after all, since he did throw his voice out.

| 6. alinutza20 (21) | 1 year ago | Well, I am one of those people who like both Metallica and Megadeth, but I clearly prefer Metallica. While I simply adore Hetfield, I have to say that Mustaine is a better guitarist, in my opinion, of course. So, if I had to "tag" them, I would go with Hetfield - best voice, Mustaine - best guitar player.

| dogragurjeet (3) | 1 year ago | i second that too..... mustaine had nice guitar riffs up his sleeve.... but yes hettfield had a much better voice. Dont know why but sometimes mustaine's voice sounded little squeaky... dont get me wrong as i love megadeth. I guess i like megadeth for the kind of music they play.... very fast and powerful while metallica still beleives in the slow crunching ever powerful delivery of music..... so full marks to both:)

But if I had to choose one above the other, then it would definately be James Hetfield, even though his voice quality has changed quiet a bit in the last couple of years.

Both have their strong points, but vocally Hetfield is better then Mustaine for me. Neither of their voices are like they were before but Hetfield sounded alright during Sick Of The Studio 2007, but I haven't heard Mustaine too recently to compare with.
