 I have a family member who is in the 2nd grade, but probably should have stayed in the first grade. His parents spend two hours a night with him on homework, and its a constant repeating the same thing and he said he does not understand. His letters and number are written backwards. Anyone ever had a elementary school child struggling with basic reading, writing, what did you do to resolve? What are some good sources out there to help this child? I am thinking he needs basic instruction such as phonics and he is not getting it in the school. I am afraid he might become a statistic if this is not nip in the bud. I appreciate any suggestion.

2.  melissaruth1 (2840) | 1 year ago |  It sounds to me like he has dyslexia, and until it is diagnosed and properly treated with corrective glasses, he will continue to struggle. Dyslexia is very easy to diagnose and treat, but he needs to see a eye doctor and you need to tell him what you just said that he see is numbers and letter backwards.

| 3. rjholley (8) | 1 year ago |  I have a 7 year old in 2nd grade he still writes some of his letters backwards, but his reading has improved tremendously over the summer. If this child is your typical child that occasionally gets put in time out here is one suggestion. Instead of just putting him in time out have him sit down and read to himself over and over again. This helped my son and my 9 year old daughter dont worry that it will stop them from liking to read cause that is not the case. because now my 9 year old is above average in reading and I can no longer use that as a punishment because she tries to get in trouble just so she can be alone in her room reading. LOL. Another thing the writing some letters backwards is quite normal especially if they try to get in a hurry when you get the reading down do the same thing with the writing.
