It is a way to communicate with other people and have a personal forum to vent ones ideas and opinions. Which is why most (I would be 95% at least) are not making money or even concerned about making money. Making money off of a blog would be like charging people for your random ideas and thoughts.

I belong to a couple, but you have to have a blog and show that there is some traffic comming into it. So I really don't know if you can make money off blogs, but I'm sure going to try to find out if you can.
