The Kitten may have had something wrong with it, or the Mother Cat may have post partum depression.. Many do not realise cats can get depression and mental illnesses as well.

I had One Cat years ago she would give birth to kittens raise them perfectly.. But if one kitten got killed, she would run around and kill the rest of her kittens and everyone elses kittens. It was traumatic to witness as a child, but the mother cat explained to me that the kittens were sick, and she killed them to keep the adults from getting sick. I did not understand what she meant until a year after she passed away, one kitten got sick, and well all the kittens got sick within days, and over half of our adult cats died... a very nasty virus, we still to this day do not know what causes it... But if a cat notices this they will kill their kitten while young to spare them a sickly life... sometimes..

Other times animals suddenly get nervous, and this is not just in cats it's in dogs, in pigs, in many animals.. If they end up very nervous or anxious they will suddenly eat their young...

This does not necessarly mean it is because you are to close to her when she is bearing her kittens, but something made her nervous or started... could be another person, could be just a sound of a dog barking, or a car even.. or just anxiety... and not understanding what to do...

I grew up on a farm with many feral cats, and many tame cats. We had one cat that had her first litter did well and raised them fine as well as others.. We had the next cat, who would always abandon her kittens never knew what to do, then we'd have another that would always eat her young sometimes, and others times not... I believe the ones eating their young possible do it to prevent passing on or spreading illness, cats can sense it and smell it on their kittens.... is the most common reason I saw for this I used to rescue Blackstar's kittens from her and raise them... but they did not live longer than 5-6 weeks old... because they were born so sickly....

Make sure you mother cats get the proper nutrients, and at least get enough time in between births before other litters.. Otherwise if they give birth to kittens like some of our naughty ones did.. have a litter in the Spring.. Healthy lil buggers have one in the fall.. afterwards.. unhealthy and very sickly.. because the mothers body did not have enough time to build up nutrients... to handle another birth.... and if the mother is feeling sick herself or has a cold.. sometimes that alone will trigger them to eat their young as well, as their body is trying to use the nutrients....

I recommend talking to the vet about it.. And well with my Cats I noticed it is about the Tiger year when the Cat population just explodes.. And when this happens some Cats eat their own young or abandon them due to overpopulation...

I have seen cat ate her kitten many times. When I was 10 year old, my family had one cat. It had many kittens and it ate its kitten many times as well. First i did not know anything,I just wonder where was all the kitten, I asked my dad, he said he gave a way because we could not take care all of the. That time my dad hide me!

One day I found a kitten's head, it was so horrible and terrify for me that day. And after that I saw my family cat was eating the other kitten (I'm writing down here now and I still so scared). I just ran away and screamed a lot.

And from that day I never close/touch/hold cat any more. I see cat i step far away from them. I can say that I'm afraid cat from that day. That's my experience, eye witness .

However, I don't know about year tiger as you said here!!! I do see cat ate her kitten.

Or the mother ate and killed the kitten because the tom (male cat) wanted her to to bring her back in heat.
