Is There A Geneticist In The House? |
|
I always wondered if my family was really related to me. They always said it was true.. but still I wondered as I looked at pictures. My mother, father and sister all have straight dark hair and brown eyes. They tan really well, turning quite brown in the summer. I have dark red curly hair, blue eyes and very fair skin...think glue. Now my grandfathers on both sides had blue eyes.. but that's it. Neither of them had red or light hair. ON top of this, every woman in my family, immediate and extended is heavier than me and totally blessed in the "girls" department. I am a stick.. from top to bottom. What do you think, is it possible..or should I start polling mailmen?

1. Transdisc (16606) | 1 year ago | Hmm, I am showing great restraint in my response, Curly. I saw someone on here yesterday who said their child is a geneticist. Maybe they'll see this lovely discussion.

CurlyRed (2796) | 1 year ago | It's a game isn't it! lol.. whenever you hint that you have thoughts stored in your head that you aren't sharing.. I am overcome by a terrible curisouity, lmao.. Was it the poling?

Transdisc (16606) | 1 year ago | No, it's your self description. I was going to say something nice, actually, but it could have been construed as flirty, so I said nothing.

2. theprogamer (7373) | 1 year ago | Heh heh, you are worrying a bit Curly but its not that much. Curly, in genetics and procreation there are two types of genes one should consider. The dominant and the recessive. Dominant genes are obvious and are much more likely to appear in offspring. Recessive genes are in the DNA of the parents inherited like the dominant genes, but the recessive has little chance of appearing in offspring. There is also incomplete domination meaning the dominant genes will share traits with the recessive genes if the combination is correct. So after all of that nerdspeak, the simple answer is, you probably inherited and successfully brought about recessive traits from the family tree. Meanwhile the dominant genes didn't occur or couldn't completely dominate in you at least the ones you described. Its rare but certainly possible. Oh and stop bothering the post office!

CurlyRed (2796) | 1 year ago | "stop bothering the post office", lol! So, tell me about one other thing... we always suspected that my ex husbands sister was a child of her mother and her mother brother.. Can two blue eyed parents produce a brown eyed child?
| |
|
|
theprogamer (7373) | 1 year ago | Oh yes they can. Brown is the most prevalent eye color in all of humanity. Plus it is a dominant trait in a gene capable of producing brown or blue eyes known as bey2. The stronger trait producing the stronger proteins will easily displace the weaker proteins produced by the gene. Also know that eye color isn't like paint with offspring. It's possible to have parents of one eye color produce a child of another eye color. Of course, if those parents are brown eyed and producing a different eye color, then something could be up. Not always though.

CurlyRed (2796) | 1 year ago | OH... ok.. See we always thought that with blue being a recessive gene.. that a person had to have a double dose of blue to make get them..which meant they could only contribute the blue jean to a child My parents both have brown eyes.. lmao...that was the one thing I wasnt worried about because I figured that they each had a recessive blue from my grandfathers. Waah... I really AM the mailmans,
