Has anyone here tried out gem mining?

I've been watching the Travel Channel and there have been a couple of shows about gem mining. They talked about this place in North Caroline where you can buy a bucket of rocks and sift through them to find gems. People have actually gotten lucky and made pretty good money from the gems they have found.

I think this might be something that would be fun to try out. The buckets aren't very expensive so it might be a good day of fun.

Has anyone tried this? If so, did you find any good gems worth anything?

I think I agree with you and it does sound like a good time. If you remember the place, let me know. I am trying to find some good ideas for family vacations that might not cost too much money. At the moment, Disney World is out of the question. What is the name of the show? I tend to watch Travel Channel and drool a lot, too. Usually when I am laying in bed.
