Monkeys Helping People With Disabilities |
|
Here is another story from Reader's Digest, about an organization called Helping Hands that trains Capuchin monkeys to assist handicapped people with small daily tasks. Check out this heartwarming story of a man named Craig, how he became disabled, and his monkey Minnie that helps him get on with his life, so to speak. http://www.rd.com/content... you ever heard of capuchin monkeys being used to help people perform small daily tasks? Do you think it's an interesting and worthwhile concept, considering how much it takes to train and care for one of these monkeys? I feel that there are many things that cost a lot of money that aren't really beneficial, so why not spend money for a cause that helps people. I knew there were animals that helped people, but didn't know about the monkeys. I think it's a great idea. If you know anyone who might benefit from this service, here is their website:http://www.helpinghandsmonkeys.org/You can also donate to help the program.

dragonryder (3574) | 1 year ago | Oh, thank you. I didn't think anyone was going to reply to this.:-D It's nice that you are able to donate to worthwhile causes. I am a bit upset that the link for the helping hands website didn't come out right as a clickable link. Oh well, I'm sure everyone knows how to copy it to their browser. Don't you think those little capuchins are the cutest things?

theprogamer (7373) | 1 year ago | Don't worry about the link. There's plenty of workarounds so its no biggie at all. To your cute remark Yep, in their own way, the certainly are. But then again, you're talking to a guy that also thinks reptiles and some insects are cute too. I'll still admit those monkeys and chimps are pretty cute and I've seen a few serve as great companions not just assistants. Of course, this isn't a signal for everyone to just go get one. There are rules and there should be restraint since its not a typical domestic animal. Other than that, I'm glad people that need it are getting the help and companionship with these monkeys.

dragonryder (3574) | 1 year ago | LOL...I guess that "cute" question seems kinda odd from one guy to another huh? My wife loves lizards too. She's ok with most bugs, except spiders and a few other weird looking ones. I could care less.

theprogamer (7373) | 1 year ago | Well if other think its odd, whatever. I'm better off being me and actually admiting something is cute, beautiful, lovely... there is no harm in that, and its not illegal for a guy to admit such about things (well at least not yet, that could change stateside with the way some things are going. but thats for another discussion). Thanks for the best response choice Dragonryder. I'm glad I found another charity to promote and support, and its thanks to you giving me more info about it.

2. BayleighGray (1793) | 1 year ago | Hi Dragon, The link is expired I guess, its not there anymore:( I think this is pretty cool. You can train these monkeys to do all kinds of things really. We have a State Fair here every August, and this year they had one of those monkeys. You held out a dollar, he would take it, tip his hat and then go and get you a pic of him which he signed!!! It was so cute!! Im going to check out the other website, I think this is def a charitable org. Thanks! Bay xx

dragonryder (3574) | 1 year ago | That's weird about the link. I tried the one here in my discussion and you're right, it didn't work. Then I went back in my computer's history and found the link and it worked. I'll post it here and see what happens. http://www.rd.com/content... That is really cool you were able to experience one of those monkeys in real life. I also agree that the Helping Hands sounds like a worthwhile charity.

BayleighGray (1793) | 1 year ago | Hi Dragon, Well, that was a very emotional story I just read! I couldnt imagine anything he has went through. I really cant imagine my brain knowing all I have to do is move my hand or my arm and then nothing happens. We take so much for granted in life. The little things we are so used too. Yes this is def a great charity! Id like to see more of these Capuchin monkeys helping people like this. They seem to be able to do more than a trained dog would. Thanks for doing the link again! Bay xx

dragonryder (3574) | 1 year ago | You're welcome. Glad you were able to read the story. You should check out my discussion titled "The Baby and the Battalion". It's a real tear jerker too. I'll have to go make sure the link still works, since it's from Reader's Digest too.

3. blackbriar (5149) | 1 year ago | Capuchin monkeys have been trained/used for decades to help parapelegics with their daily tasks although it's been quite a few years since I read a story about them helping disabled ppl. They are rather cute monkeys and pretty tame/laid back at that.

dragonryder (3574) | 1 year ago | I wasn't sure how long they had been trained and used to help people. I do think that it's not that common to find an organization that helps people be able to afford a monkey to help. Have you ever held one?

blackbriar (5149) | 1 year ago | I've met one personally in a pet store near me but never actually held him. The owners kept him in a huge cage for ppl to see, talk to, and pet but being he was so mischievous, they wouldn't let him out till closing time. They were afraid he might escape whenever the door opened. They have since closed up along with all the other small pet shops cause Petco moved into the area.

dragonryder (3574) | 1 year ago | Yeah those big chain stores sure drive everyone else out of business. I have never really liked pet stores because most of them don't take good care of the animals. My dad started a fish store when I was 8, and it branched off into small animals too. I loved helping take care of the animals.
