2. megumiart (2924) | 1 year ago | I struggled with exercise bulimia and anorexia in the past few years. I don't think anyone ever fully heals from these type of sicknesses. My counselor herself struggled with the same illnesses as I.The root of eating disorders is caused by mental control issues. The only thing that can help these people is therapy, or going to a eating disorder rehab facility.

3. fineexistence (357) | 1 year ago | I don't know anyone with a eating disorder but saw it on tv once on how they stuff themselves with food or starve themselves unnecessarily. It's more of a psychological problem than anything else and doctors' and counselors' help in this aspect is especially important. Closed ones' support is also very important during this period of recovery and it is a process, not a solution on its own.

maximax8 (5412) | 1 year ago | This must have been an interesting program to watch on television. I think it takes quite a long time for a person to discuss their eating disorder. When I was a teenager one of my friends hardy ate anything. She was very thin but viewed herself as fat. Sadly she didn't ever get over feeling like that.
| |
|
|
fineexistence (357) | 1 year ago | It certainly was an interesting program and I think it takes a lot of courage for people who used to have eating disorders to come upfront and admit that. It's also a great way of encouragement for current sufferers of this problem. I have written an article on losing weight fast. http://www.helium.com/tm/... You might like to get your friend to read it if you find it useful. If anything, my recommended methods help to stay healthy and fit. Comments on my article would also be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

maximax8 (5412) | 1 year ago | I have just read your article and think that you given very good advice. I will suggest that my friend reads it. You give people the idea of choosing a goal weight and ways to monitor their achievement. I especially liked the sport suggestions with the time each should be done for.

4. peanutjar (2248) | 1 year ago | Hi,well i dont know if its a eating disorder but my mom hardly ever eats,is 56 years old and weighs 92 lbs!She complains that she never has time or doesnt feel like eating. She became sick 3 years ago with pneumonia and developed asthma and ever since then she just cant seem to gain the weight back that she lost, plus she smokes alot and that doesnt aid, instead it cuts the appetite alot suppressing the urge to eat.Shes very poor and hardly makes enough a month to buy food, she pays the bills and whats left over then sje will buy some food with it which is like $200.00 of food for a whole month!Food cost alot and you dont get alot with $200.00.I help her out quite abit and when things are on special i buy double the quantity and give her half.If you saw her, well i feel really bad to say this since she is my mom,but im embarrassed to be seen with her because of what she looks like:(:( People stare at her alot and with weird faces,my boyfriend can hardly look her in the face when she comes to visit.I believe she does has some kind of disorder of not eating. Peanutjar:)

maximax8 (5412) | 1 year ago | Thanks for telling about your mom, peanutjar. She eats very little but smokes a lot so that does not sound good for her health, especially her asthma. It sounds like she is not hungry for much of the time and only buys a bit of food once she has paid the bills because food is not important to her. It is great that you help her out. Yes, she has some kind of eating disorder. Good luck to her. I once went to Hawaii. I was amazed how much food cost there. Even bananas that were grown there were expensive. I spoke to some people that lived there. Most of them had to work long hours to have enough money to continue living there. When food is so expensive maybe it is tempting not to eat very much.

5. LightninStrike (2507) | 1 year ago | A cousin of mine has one. I mean, it's not one of those super severe cases in which the person is about to die and beyond scrawny. However, she has a disorder. She always does weird things with food, only eats a few types of food and eats special pills and stuff. She is obsessed and i think that's enough to say she has an eating disorder.

sara03 (1550) | 1 year ago | Right friend. I am sharing an article for the benefit of all our mylot friends. Helping The Person With An Eating Disorder is essential for his living comfortably. "Treatment can save the life of someone with an eating disorder. Friends, relatives, teachers, and physicians all play an important role in helping the ill person start and stay with a treatment program. Encouragement, caring, and persistence, as well as information about eating disorders and their dangers, may be needed to convince the ill person to get help, stick with treatment, or try again. Family members and friends can call local hospitals or university medical centers to find out about eating disorder clinics and clinicians experienced in treating the illnesses. For college students, treatment programs may be available in school counseling centers. Family members and friends should read as much as possible about eating disorders, so they can help the person with the illness understand his or her problem. Many local mental health organizations and the self-help groups listed at the end of this brochure provide free literature on eating disorders. Some of these groups also provide treatment program referrals and information on local self-help groups. Once the person gets help, he or she will continue to need lots of understanding and encouragement to stay in treatment. " Health is wealth

6. wseayuan (322) | 1 year ago | I know some friends of mine who have an eating disorder.they don't know how to live happily and sensefully so they spent most time on computer and computer games, they always forget eating, when they are too tired, they just eat some fast food and have 3 hours rest, then go on the computer games. I think the best way to get over it is make them know and take the responsibility of life and make them overcome the bad habit .

7. sara03 (1550) | 1 year ago | Hi friend, my cousin daughter had this and she turned very weak. She could not concentrate on her studies and get fainted very alternative week in school. We took her to the doctor who gave her special advices and some advices on eating habits and life style changes which worked in her favor. She is normal now. I am having an interesting article which i though can be shared within our mylot friends. ") Get leverage. This means you have get to the point where you believe you must change, you must change your eating habits and you MUST change it right now. You must believe that not to change will be more painful and that change will bring you pleasure. If you only get to the point of thinking that you maybe should change. This is not enough to create a long lasting change in your behavior. Only a definite MUST change will give you leverage. 2) Interrupt the pattern. This is when you do something totally unexpected in relation to your dominating thoughts in our case food. For example, when a bulimic person gets a bit stressed by the end of day or feels uncomfortable regarding something – the first thought reaction for her/him would be binge eat and purge (this is the way for her/him) to get pleasure, control and inner confidence. For anorexic – the thoughts of success and looking good and being confident associated with refusing to eat and starving yourself is their way of dealing with things. This pattern (thoughts association) needs to be interrupted with some unexpected comment or behaviors which shocks the person into paying more attention to what is going on right here and now in their mind. For example, I watch on TV once how one American Psychotherapist breaks the thoughts patterns of people with major phobias. One man had a major phobia with spiders (he saw spiders everywhere and was horrified just with his thoughts about spiders). The Psychotherapist asked the guy: "How do you feel about spiders?" The man turned pale and looked extremely anxious, and his answer was: "Not very good…" And at this particular moment the Psychotherapist jumped from his chair and started hopping on one foot in front of the man shouting very loudly "Yam, yam, yam, yam," making jerky and funny movements with his whole body. The man looked stunned, his attention was 100% on the Psychotherapist now, he forgot instantly about his scary feelings regarding spiders. After jumping and shouting for a minute Psychotherapist stopped, sit on his chair like nothing had happened (he looked normal and was smiling and happily). After a small pause he asks the man again how he feels about spiders. The man did not answer straight away because he actually needed a few seconds more to bring himself to the state of spider phobia again. During the few seconds when the man was thinking, the Psychotherapist repeated what he did the first time, making the man completely confused of what’s going on. The Psychotherapist repeated whole procedure quite a few times (5 or 6). What do you think happen to the man? He was completely cured of his phobia, just from one single Psychotherapy section. 3) Breaking the old associations An interview with this man taken a few months later was shown on TV as well. In this interview he said that now he does not have scary feelings about spiders any more and he stop seeing them. He also said that now if someone mentions to him about spiders he laughs, because he has a different association now, he associate spiders with these funny things the Psychotherapist did during the session where he was caught by surprise and even shocked with what had happened. Another American Psychotherapist I know use to splash cold water people’s into faces at the time when people are describing their fears or feelings of bad habits. Again it breaks the association with their habits or phobias. So the trick is to get the eating disorder sufferer to break their association with food by interrupting their thought processes when they feel compelled to not eat or eat and purge. You just need to workout the most appropriate time to do it. You may not be able to break their eating disorder with one single session but combined this with other things and it will be of great benefit." Health is wealth

maximax8 (5412) | 1 year ago | Thanks for discussing your superb ideas. It must be interesting for a Psychotherapist to try to help people get over their eating disorders and phobias. It is great that the man got over his fear of spiders. I was surprised when I read about the other Psychotherapist splashing water in people's faces. That is certainly likely to interrupt their thought process.

sara03 (1550) | 1 year ago | yes friend i am sharing another treatment for this. "Eating disorders are most successfully treated when diagnosed early. Unfortunately, even when family members confront the ill person about his or her behavior, or physicians make a diagnosis, individuals with eating disorders may deny that they have a problem. Thus, people with anorexia may not receive medical or psychological attention until they have already become dangerously thin and malnourished. People with bulimia are often normal weight and are able to hide their illness from others for years. Eating disorders in males may be overlooked because anorexia and bulimia are relatively rare in boys and men. Consequently, getting--and keeping--people with these disorders into treatment can be extremely difficult. In any case, it cannot be overemphasized how important treatment is--the sooner, the better. The longer abnormal eating behaviors persist, the more difficult it is to overcome the disorder and its effects on the body. In some cases, long-term treatment may be required. Families and friends offering support and encouragement can play an important role in the success of the treatment program. If an eating disorder is suspected, particularly if it involves weight loss, the first step is a complete physical examination to rule out any other illnesses. Once an eating disorder is diagnosed, the clinician must determine whether the patient is in immediate medical danger and requires hospitalization. While most patients can be treated as outpatients, some need hospital care. Conditions warranting hospitalization include excessive and rapid weight loss, serious metabolic disturbances, clinical depression or risk of suicide, severe binge eating and purging, or psychosis. The complex interaction of emotional and physiological problems in eating disorders calls for a comprehensive treatment plan, involving a variety of experts and approaches. Ideally, the treatment team includes an internist, a nutritionist, an individual psychotherapist, and a psychopharmacologist--someone who is knowledgeable about psychoactive medications useful in treating these disorders. To help those with eating disorders deal with their illness and underlying emotional issues, some form of psychotherapy is usually needed. A psychiatrist, psychologist, or other mental health professional meets with the patient individually and provides ongoing emotional support, while the patient begins to understand and cope with the illness. Group therapy, in which people share their experiences with others who have similar problems, has been especially effective for individuals with bulimia. Use of individual psychotherapy, family therapy, and cognitive-behavioral therapy--a form of psychotherapy that teaches patients how to change abnormal thoughts and behavior--is often the most productive. Cognitive-behavior therapists focus on changing eating behaviors usually by rewarding or modeling wanted behavior. These therapists also help patients work to change the distorted and rigid thinking patterns associated with eating disorders. NIMH-supported scientists have examined the effectiveness of combining psychotherapy and medications. In a recent study of bulimia, researchers found that both intensive group therapy and antidepressant medications, combined or alone, benefited patients. In another study of bulimia, the combined use of cognitive-behavioral therapy and antidepressant medications was most beneficial. The combination treatment was particularly effective in preventing relapse once medications were discontinued. For patients with binge eating disorder, cognitive-behavioral therapy and antidepressant medications may also prove to be useful. Antidepressant medications commonly used to treat bulimia include desipramine, imipramine, and fluoxetine. For anorexia, preliminary evidence shows that some antidepressant medications may be effective when combined with other forms of treatment. Fluoxetine has also been useful in treating some patients with binge eating disorder. These antidepressants may also treat any co-occurring depression. The efforts of mental health professionals need to be combined with those of other health professionals to obtain the best treatment. Physicians treat any medical complications, and nutritionists advise on diet and eating regimens. The challenge of treating eating disorders is made more difficult by the metabolic changes associated with them. Just to maintain a stable weight, individuals with anorexia may actually have to consume more calories than someone of similar weight and age without an eating disorder. This information is important for patients and the clinicians who treat them. Consuming calories is exactly what the person with anorexia wishes to avoid, yet must do to regain the weight necessary for recovery. In contrast, some normal weight people with bulimia may gain excess weight if they consume the number of calories required to maintain normal weight in others of similar size and age." 9. spiderman05 (588) | 1 year ago | My eating hours are very irregular. I can spend a day without eating a proper meal. Also, I don't eat at regular hours, and when I eat I generally eat more than average. I don't know if you can call that an eating disorder though. I guess, you were more referring to things like anorexia.

This can unearth hidden emotions, memories, insecurities, etc. Though uncomfortable at times, this is one of the best ways for someone to come to terms with themselves." health is wealth

10. babiixgiirl (268) | 1 year ago | I have struggled with anorexia and bulimia (as well as severe depression) for as long as I can remember, and probably always will. I mean, only a few months ago, I had a relapse - it just goes to show, there's no simple solution. Once you've crossed that initial line, there's no going back. You just have to try and keep people around you who love you, and who you can rely on whenever you need them. As a few people above me have said, I don't think you really ever recover, or even really get over it. You just have to try and take each day as it comes.
