Warner Brothers gone to Blu-Ray only |
|
Another turn in the mindless DVD war... but maybe one to finally put the whole thing to a close. Warner Brothers was for both formats but is now going to Blu-Ray only in 2008. http://blogs.pcworld.com/... Like some of the commentators on the article, I'm waiting for Paramount and whoever else is left to just drop it already. The better format is winning and its technology should be furthered. Thoughts on this? Think HD-DVD will stick around? Why? I'm thinking maybe it can be used for computer applications, but making drives to read both formats takes more effort and has more hassles for the manufacturers. Also, what to do about VMD-DVD... I'm thinking the same thing there too. Think Blu-Ray should or will be the main next-gen DVD format? Its got the edge spec wise and there is more support for it on multiple formats. I'm just waiting for the technology to disperse and become a more affordable technology for consumers.

2. zeloguy (1973) | 11 months ago | I was told this when I was discussing affairs of buying a hi-def DVD at Best Buy. To make things clear when we are saying they are only going to Blu-Ray that we are talking about HI-DEF ONLY. You will still be able to get regular DVDs from Warner Brothers. Difference between regular and Hi-Def... Blu-Ray/Hi-Def DVD broadcast in 1080P (true hi-def) DVD broadcast in 480P (regular television standard is 480I) difference between I and P I - interlaced P - progressive Won't get more into it than that... P is better than I.

theprogamer (7373) | 9 months ago | Blu-ray is an newer form of DVD format that exceeds the existing formats (DVD, Dual Layer, etc). This discussion is a couple of months old, but blu-ray kept receiving victories with the manufacturers and developers. Soon enough the technology will be more permeable(affordable) and many people will have access to it. Oh and thanks for that comment Champ<3.

6. ladyluna (2054) | 9 months ago | Hey there Progamer, OK, now I'm really going to show my ignorance: I get that this is a reliving of the antiquated war between Beta and (the other) video formatting, and where Beta lost. However, I thought that HD was legislated to take over analog television broadcasting by 2009, meaning that every t.v. would have to be formatted for HD? How the heck does Blu-Ray fit in with HD tv's? And, if Blu-Ray wins out from among the movie studios, then what's going to happen to all the changes that have been directed at converting analog signals to digital, and mandating that they be formatted to be received by HD tv's? And, what about the satellite companies already having geared up their programming options for HD?

nova1945 (887) | 9 months ago | Actually all broadcast will be digital instead of analog in 2009. HD (high defination) is entirely different animal. Blu-ray is just an enhanced format. You can still play DVD on Blu-ray players, but you can't play blu-ray discs on DVD players. At least that's my understanding. I could be all wet.

theprogamer (7373) | 9 months ago | Several of the existing dvd players will not play blu-ray or HD-DVD unless specified. Since Toshiba moved to Blu-ray the whole contest is finished and the effects are trickling down (Blu-ray won, HD production has been abandoned, HD-projects have been cancelled, yes I'm looking at you Star Trek: "Remastered"). The manufacturers plan on making future Blu-ray DVD players capable of playing HD (but without the HD features of the disc). Playing blu-ray or hd-dvd in an antequated or non blu-ray player will not work. The big switch that you are refering to is different, since TVs are moving to digital signals. Meaning older TVs have to be adapted to suit the change. The DVDs are different.
