Is it right for a school to tell students how to and how not to wear their hair? |
|
http://www.breitbart.com/... Here's the long and short of it 4 teens refuse to get their hair cut resulting in a suspension. School dress code allowed for a time that boys with hair longer than the collor to 'bind it', but too many parents complained about the loophole so the school cracked down, the boys refused and the school suspended. other rules of teh dress code include: prohibited from wearing sleeveless shirts, excessively tight or baggy pants, mismatched socks, "disruptive hair styles" and "unnatural" hair colors, While some of these rules make sense and appeals have gone all the way to the TX state supreme court they have been upheld. Do you think schools have the right to effect strict dress codes? Mooch

1. Mare73 (815) | 10 months ago | YES schools have the right and ALL SCHOOLS in the US should have freaking dress codes! No baggy pants showing off your azz, no bandanas, no head rags (unless proven/documented religious reasons), no slang on clothes or writing, no belly shirts for girls, no hoop earings. no blingage - school is to learn not the Paris Runway!

2. eden32 (2786) | 10 months ago | Public school should not be able to have more than a basic no profanity on clothes dress codes. School is mandatory for children under 16, unless a parent can afford private school or chooses to home school, they have no choice but to send their child to the public school in their district. If the parents approve of a child's hair style or even color, it's not the schools job or place to dictate something different. A private school can set whatever standards they choose, as no parent is obligated to send their child to that school.

3. lilaclady (16191) | 10 months ago | Oh you have hit on a sore point for me, I have never believed in schools strict dress code, I remember when I was at school I was always in trouble because of the dress code, and when it comes to length of hair as far as I am concerned that is a personal choice, kids are at school to learn and being an individual and having your own identity should be part of that, this is probably why kids don't learn commonsense at school they only learn whats in the books and the want of the person running the school, they don't learn to think for themselves outside of the books and other peoples preferences.

4. angelface23 (1707) | 10 months ago | no way. I think that when you are in highschool you want to experiment alot with different hairstyles and colors. I don't think that the school should have a say in those kinds of things. I can get the sleeveless shirt thing but not the mismatched socks? Who cares if your socks dont match. I don't think we had rules like that when I was in school.

5. Adoniah (1760) | 10 months ago | I think that all schools should have dress codes. I am sick and tired of seeing young boys trying to walk with their britches hanging so low that you can see all of their under wear and their legs akimbo so that their britches do not fall all of the way off. It stays warm most of the year here so the kids go off to school in undershirts and shorts most of the year. They where flip flops and their feet get filthy. The girls wear spagetti strap midi tops with no bras and short shorts. I really wonder where their Mothers are when they leave the house. I am sure that they are not at home.

6. Modestah (7428) | 10 months ago | absolutely, though I do not believe these codes listed are at all strict. the kids can express their hair fancies during the long summer break. a dress code such as what is posted is not difficult to comply with and such rules will help a child to learn to discipline himself which is a necessary componant in the real world. wonder why so many young workers of today think the world owes them something, they are unreliable, mouthy and irresponsible over all... maybe if they had some stricter codes to live by in their school years they would not be such renegades later on. other ideas for dress codes - no tshirts as outter wear (this will eliminate the graphics which can be disruptive to the learning process) no skirts above the knee no shorts above the knee personally I think it would be great if denim pants were disallowed and ideally school uniforms are the way to go.

crazyredhead (176) | 10 months ago | OK, I am going to say this in the nicest way possible. If I was told I could not wear a t-shirt or jeans, I would probably smack the words right out of their mouth. Sure, in private school...do whatever you want with dress codes. But, the whole point of public school is to be able to do what you want with your clothes and your hair. Yes, it is nasty to see kids with their pants falling off their azz and their chests falling out but I refuse to let ANYONE take away my jeans and t-shirt. Then we might as well say, take away all the windows, clear off all the walls, I mean come on.

7. OreoCookie3 (13782) | 10 months ago | I think a school should put a limit on what is acceptable. Kids with blue hair standing straight on end and pants hanging down below their butts is not necessary for learning. If they were reporting to a job there would be a dress code unless they were maybe working in a tattoo parlor.. then it might be acceptable...But for school I think they are distracting to the others who are there to learn.

Galena (2953) | 10 months ago | blonde hair with pigtails isn't necessary for learning either. hair has nothing to do with learning. I don't think trousers hanging low is acceptable for school, but there is nothing wrong with blue spiky hair. it doesn't stop people from being able to learn.

8. suspenseful (12709) | 10 months ago | I do believe there should be a dress code, but this is overdoing it. At the Church school down our block, the girls are told not to wear tops that show their belly buttons, and the boys not to wear unnatural and baggy clothes that show their underwear. The girls are not to wear skirts that will show their underwear when they sit down. In other words, they have to be modest. A few dye their hair funny colors and that stops when they get engaged. It is quite hot in the summer here and so it would be ridiculous to prohibit girls from having sleeveless tops. There should be a mode of sensibility to the dress code.

9. crazyredhead (176) | 10 months ago | I think there has to be a dress code but there is a line that they should not cross. Sure, don't show too much of the skin such as pants below their azz or their chests out for the world to see or super tiny mini skirts that don't cover them up. But there is a line, I guess if the hair was to the point where it was blocking a students view when sitting in a desk that is one story, but even then, they can sit in the back. High school years are the years we get to experiment, we can't when we get older because of work dress codes so give us our freedom.

10. Katlady2 (4036) | 10 months ago | I think that schools should have some type of guidelines for their dress code....to an extent. The hairstyles and colors, I don't think that should become a major issue in school. But as for the baggy/tight pants, and the revealing clothing, I think they should keep a tight rein on that. At the high school here, they even enforce the code that students cannot wear solid red or solid blue from head to toe because those are the colors of the rival gangs in the area.
