Snake on the roof of our house |
It is mid summer in Australia at the moment so the school holidays are still on. As my sister and brother in law started work and I am the only one that is still home my nephews are staying with me during the week. The younger one was playing with a boomerang (a plastic one that we got from the shops to keep him busy). It got stuck on the roof so my husband went up to get it. As soon as he was up there he calld out to me to get the kids inside the house and get the yellow pages. he got down and told me there was a snake on top of the house. I started loughing and saying things like "yeah thats a good one" he told me he was been serius and that the snake looked like it was injured or something. So ok I called the animal control people. By the time they came the snake had moved to the plastic roof over our varanda so they had to push it down. After about 2 hours the snake was packed away the only logical explanation is that a bird droped it there as it had some deep woonds. That was scary now I check the roof every 10 min.

violeta_va (1491) | 9 months ago | where we live about 500m from our home there is a huge wetland thing with water and tall grass and the animal catchers were called something like 80 times last summer to catch snakes from peoples homes and gardens. Animals are atacked a lot as well. it is scary when you think about it. We were told to check our heating as it goes under the house and that is how most snakes get inside (well that is what we were told by the guys that came to our home)

violeta_va (1491) | 9 months ago | I am so scared of snakes that if I ever see one inside the house I am selling the house and moving to another area. Lucky for me the snakes dont come near the house if they can help it:) there is a lot of housses and fences between me and them.

Transdisc (16121) | 9 months ago | I'm terrified of snakes, too. The time they were in the house was during some remnodeling. We spotted them and didn't dare let them out of sight and we killed them. I hated to kill the King snake -- I'd seen him around the farm from time to time, but he crossed the line when he came into the house. If we hadn't killed those snakes and had seen them in the house, there is no way I would have slept in that house again. No way!

violeta_va (1491) | 9 months ago | geee who was the brave person doing the killing I would hace sh!t my self. I think its ilegal in Australia to kill a snake thats why I called profesionals. my friends live in a rented house and he is so lazy he had not cut the grass in year and a half. His wife was pregnant so his parents came from europe to help with the baby. his father cut the grass and cleaned the rubish and found lots of snakes. few biger and I think 7 small snakes (15-20 cm) long. I would not have stayed in the house as I bet there was more there expecially since it was a rented house they could have moved out expecially with a small baby.

Transdisc (16121) | 9 months ago | Wow, I can't believe it's against the law to kill a snake there! Wow. I killed the snakes. The King snake (which eats other snakes and is great to have around) was after the moccasin (which is poisonous.) That's why I didn't want to kill the King. That's something about your friend not cutting the grass for so long!! I see snakes around here all the time. All the time, but rarely near the house.

violeta_va (1491) | 9 months ago | no we have to call special people to catch the snakes and relise them in the wild (so they can atack another person or go into someons house and you have to call them again) and each time they take about $150. aparently it is dangerous to kill them your self (well ok it is but my mother has killed 100s of snakes in her life and she is still with us)

2. jpso138 (929) | 9 months ago | I am really afraid of snakes. It would have freaked me out is I saw one on our roof knowing that it may fall on me or something. Well, probably the snake was indeed dropped by a bird or must have climbed to avoid being further harmed by whoever it was that attacked it.

violeta_va (1491) | 9 months ago | There is no way the snake would have gone there in such state on its own. There has been a lot of complain about the wet land as no one was looking after it. They said something in the local news paper that they will try and catch the snakes and resetle them in some other place and cut the grass as a little boy was atacked by one few weeks ago but the dog jumped on the snake and the snake bit the dog.

3. uath13 (2584) | 9 months ago | We get them climbing up on the roof here to sun themselves. I wouldn't bother animal control myself. I know the local snakes & how to handle them. Most of them I just leave alone, the poisoness ones get skinned & served on a plate. Haven't seen many in a while though. Think my cousin & I whiped most of them out.

violeta_va (1491) | 9 months ago | oh dont scare me now I would like to think it was droped there by a bird more than climbing up. I could not live it there with small kids in the house no way.
| |
uath13 (2584) | 9 months ago | Since I know there are poisoness snakes in my area my kids have been taught how to identify & handle them. There's no need to fear them if you know what your doing.
| |
violeta_va (1491) | 9 months ago | My son has developmental delay so teaching him what is dangerous is hard and its even harder when I teach him that snakes are bad and then he goes to a petting zoo or something and they bring a snake for the kids to hold.
| |
uath13 (2584) | 9 months ago | That does present a problem. Here in the U.S. all the poisoness snales are pit vipors which are easily identifiable from other non poisoness snakes. From what I understand the snakes in your area aren't so easy to tell apart which would make things even harder. All the same you shouldn't teach him to fear them. Fear causes panic & accidents. Teach him to respect & avoid them.
| |
violeta_va (1491) | 9 months ago | well that is the thing most of thm look the same and its not so much that I am teaching him to fear them but teaching him not to go near them because some of them might bite him. But then he goes to a party and they have 10 snakes that look almsot the same as the poison once and they let the kids play with them.
| |
uath13 (2584) | 9 months ago | Now if I'd have been showing them at that party I think I would have taken the opportunity to teach them the differences. That's a perfect situation when you could easily get their attention & get them to enjoy learning.
