The declaration, read by Prime Minister Hashim Thaci, said Kosovo would be a democratic country that respected the rights of all ethnic communities
The UN has administered Kosovo since 1999, but the area remained part of Serbia. Serbia has said it will never recognise the independence of Kosovo and threatened to use diplomatic and economic measures against Kosovo.

Kosovo is (I will never say was) the part of Serbia, it was the cradle of Serbs history, something that bonds Serbs, it is the heart and soul and our heritage.
Serbia will never accept Kosovo's independence, no matter what other countries will have to say.
Kosovo has no economy, it is the country that all the drug trafficking and other illegal activities are involved.
I feel sorry for the minority of Serbs that will stay there, but I fear for no long, because Albanians will force them to leave their homes.
So, Kosovo's independence will bring nothing but misery to everyone.
