I never thought I would see the day that rock and roll went by the wayside, but I see it happening, and it scares the crap out of me.

Yeah, there's Nickelback, and maybe a small handful of other bands out there still carrying the torch. But think about it: Compared to every decade before this one, from the fifties through the nineties, rock is now on the rocks. Hip Hop and Rap are rapidly displacing new rock on the airwaves. Sure, there are still a lot of classic rock stations out there playing great music, but, since the turn of the century, the grunge movement seems to have been the last gasp of the greatest movement in music history--rock and roll. I am, frankly, upset about it. With the exception of Nickelback and a very few others, rock bands nowadays are just not that good. They are definitely bland in terms of overall musical quality and sophistication compared to the progressive rock of the '70's. What little new rock that is still available on the radio is far inferior to the supergroups of the last 5 decades. True rock lovers, we are in trouble. Long live Nickelback! They show the way to salvation of the artform. What do you folks think?

Yes sadly Rock seems to be in a downward spiral. Missed are the days of such greats as The Beatles, Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, etc. There needs to be a call to action for all rockers around the world to take up the torch once more and set flame to the mediocrity of the dribble to spews forth from radio speakers everywhere. (I don't want anyone to really set flame...it's just some nice word play.)

You are right, my friend. Are there really very many of us that care anymore? I mean, it's not that I am just waxing nostalgic for the old days of classic rock, although they were good ones, but I would like to see the same calibre of musicianship and the solid sound of good rock to carry on. Nickelback tries to make it happen, but you could count bands like that on two hands. Frightening! Thanks for the comment!

You know I cannot work out why this post did not get heaps of responses.
There are heaps of mylotters from our era here.

You know what I agree, good ole time rock and roll is dying out.
It is a real shame, because it was the best music out.
People I know joined a group which is all rock and roll from the ole days.
They make their costumes and have competetion dancing.

The rock music these days to my ears is just, Boom Boom Boom.
You cannot hear words let alone understand them.
At least in our day, music was music and you could hear and understand the words.
I hope someone comes along and revives old time rock.

Amen to that. I panic at the thought that one day it will only be rap, pop, and hip hop on the airwaves. God help us! The new music, with the exception of a few good artists out there, sucks. No more sophisticated way of putting it, unfortunately.

Rock is dying a slow painful death. The songs don't have the meanings that they once used to. It has turned to just plain noise that has no meaning or soul.
I'm from a younger generation and I still can't stand it. I love Van Morrison, Bob Dylan, U2..bands that write their songs and write them well. It's a dying breed and people thought Elvis was just plain noise. I wonder what those think of the crap that is out now...It's a sad state of affairs!

It is outright disturbing, isn't it? There seems to be a conspiracy out there to erase the great music and musicianship of the 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's. I read once in a book by some Italian shrink that the archtypal "lead singer" is the unconscious spokesman of the times we live in. If that is the case, then the whole damn sh*thouse is about to go up in flames. Eminem as "high priest" of the people. God forbid. It's enough for me to start believing in Revelations.

LOL....

You know, since this discussion I have been trying to figure out what is worse...
The songwriting itself or the music???
More heartbreaking I think it's the lack of soul and feeling in the lyrics...there is a lack of heart in music.

I have missed this discussion before, but I think it is great one, and I wonder why it came by rather unnoticed.
I guess rock is dying after all, not many left with enough desire to respond this kind of discussion.

I was going to respond this discussion in positive sense, I was going to say that this is a temporary period of rock music absence, this is just a calm before the storm, but I guess I would be too optimistic.

Nevertheless, I still have hope. And I'll tell you why. I have a son who is 16 now, and he was carried away with this rap and hiphop whatever. Until recently, he found out the joy that rock'n'roll brings, the excitement and fulfillment. He found out that rock music is life, but he is one of two in his class of 30 students. That is how low rock fell.
I still have faith that rock music will wake up.

You have made some really good points here. You understand what is at stake artistically for the culture as a whole. I wish I could share you optimism but....

Hate to admit that I never heard of Nickelback...
And that I really can't relate to the loss of the rock and roll so much as I am missing other music that is even more out of date...
When I was younger, I wasn't allowed to having anything harder than Carpenters, Simon and Garfunkel, the Doors, Cat Stevens, Ed Ames, Harry Belafonte', Julie Andrews, John Denver, etc.., You get the idea, in the house due to my parent's censorship so I grew up loving to sing along with these artists. I am missing them just as much as you are missing the rock and roll and I have not heard too many good substitutes
I am sorry for your upset.

Hey, whiteheron, the Doors was absolutely great rock and roll, especially the Soft Parade Album. Very refined and raw, similtaneously.
And, although Simon and Garfunkel was not technically rock and roll in the strict sense of the word, it was great music with awesome lyrics and harmonies. A very excellent rock group called "Yes" redid a tremendous version of "America". Download limewire, load it, and listen to it please. I think you will be impressed.
Cat Stevens did soft rock, but it was rock, very good stuff!Harry Belafonte was not a favorite of mine, however his version of "The Banana Song" was and still is one of my favorite songs to sing.

I love the harmony of Simon and Garfunkel in their greatest hits album and the Cat Steven's Buddha and the Chocolate box album was great. I think that I only managed to sneak and play the doors album once or twice. I though had a lot of fun at the dances with "Jump In", "The Stairway to Heaven", "YMCA" and that "They've all come to look for America"...
I remember also liking when I was younger, "Cherokee People," "The Night Chicago Died," "The wreck of the Edmond Fitzgerald," and other ballads.
I will try to download as you suggested... I am though sometimes hampered by old technology as I have a 98 gateway computer with some difficulties.
