We did it, we went from high speed Internet to Extreme. |

And no, there was not a picture of the Road Runner or a lightning symbol on the box. Now it was mainly for my husband who is a member of this Radio Play network, and is trying to get every radio play in the Universe that is in England. If there are outer space aliens who have some English radio plays, he would want them to and so we need a faster internet speed. The next one is Nitro, but that is almost $100 a month, way more than we can afford. So has anyone switch from light to high speed or from high speed to extreme? I am talking about cable and dsl subscribers, but for those who get dial up, has anyone switched from dial up to cable and your opinion please.

1. blackbriar (5147) | 8 months ago | Wtg!! with the upgrade. Wish I could afford a higher speed but I'm lucky I was able to upgrade from dial-up to basic dsl. I love it regardless. Heck of a lot faster than dial-up was and no freeze ups.

suspenseful (13377) | 8 months ago | I remember when we went from dial=up to high speed. We were amazed that we no longer had to wait half a day for a download or having to schedule our internet connection with our telephoning.

2. drknlvly6781 (2506) | 8 months ago | I, for one, didn't know there was a higher speed than high speed. What happens with that, you think of the website and it pops up? Before I moved in with my grandmother, I had dial up at my house. I had an accelerator with it, so it wasn't too bad. I really couldn't afford high speed, and I wasn't doing anything spectacular on the internet so I felt like I could wait for my sites to load. If it was a graphics rich site, I would find something else to do for a few minutes. After being here with my grandmother, and using the phone company's high speed, I am spoiled. I like how I can type in an address and seconds later, its loaded and ready to go. I will definitely have to get high speed when I move out again!!!

suspenseful (13377) | 8 months ago | Here in Canada, they put a charge on all the blank CDS for the musicians, because they think that we all download illegal music and steal from the artists. Trouble that rather encourages more illegal downloads so more are doing it. So now instead of having the extreme or faster than the high speed for businesses, they offer it to us real people. That's my theory. Anyway I live in a large city and they have to have all these choices. When we had dial=up though, we did not have accelerated and there was often trouble getting on the phone - too many connections.

|
drknlvly6781 (2506) | 8 months ago | We were lucky, our dial up service had a caller id that would tell us who was calling, and gave us the option to pick it up, or send them to voice mail. Even with that, we could stay online for a little while when we were on the phone, something like five or ten minutes before it would disconnect.

suspenseful (13377) | 6 months ago | We had to pay extra for dial up on MTS, Manitoba Telephone Service, then. You heard of the phrase, "nickel and dime to death?" So when they introduced Shaw Digital Phone that for normal people who had relatives all over the country, and the call ids were free, we jumped right on it. We have not regretted it ever since and even though MTS has tried to get us to go back, we will not. Oh and they did, begged and pleaded, told us that they were better, but they really are not.

drknlvly6781 (2506) | 6 months ago | We had to pay extra on the phone bill for dial up service when I had it as well, but the lucky thing was it was only $13 more a month, with all the features that I mentioned before included. I didn't mind paying that really.

suspenseful (13377) | 6 months ago | I suppose with the internet, it was well worth it. It is just that with us, we got so many wrong numbers, that we were also paying for those people who asked if "Bob is home" or this kid looking for Mark. And then there was the telemarketers. When we had dial up, it was just straight dial up, and we could not afford anything better. And when we got cable, it was from a company in the States, but then Shaw took over and I thought, "oh no, we will stuck on Yahoo Canada and not get those bargains," but it worked out, I have my home page on Yahoo.com.

3. reinydawn (3022) | 8 months ago | Oh wow, I totally remember going from dial up to dsl. I saw a HUGE difference in the speed of the internet. When I went from dsl to FiOS I didn't really notice because the computer is only so fast and it really can't handle the faster internet speeds.

suspenseful (13377) | 8 months ago | I noticed that when I went to Youtube, the videos lasted much quicker. I want comment on when we went from dial-up to high speed but even from high speed to extreme the speed is fast. You have to try downloading like a video or go to Youtube and watch how fast it loads.

4. Rozie37 (6458) | 8 months ago | I switched from Dial-up to DSL three years ago. I have never heard of extreme. I will have to look into it to see how much it cost. The faster the better for me, as I am a very impatient person, unfortunately.

|
suspenseful (13377) | 8 months ago | It might be called by a different name. You will have to find out if there is something faster then dsl and whether it is offered to ordinary people. Some of those services might be offered only to businesses.

suspenseful (13377) | 6 months ago | I think to get T1 up here, you have to have a business license, but I am not that sure about that. I never heard of a private person or a homeowner having that, just those businesses that have lots of employees.

5. winterose (13124) | 8 months ago | I haven't had dialup in years. I don't think that I could stand it anymore. I have extreme high speed, my computer is old and slow but my son's computer is new and he just loves it.

suspenseful (13377) | 6 months ago | We were glad when we no longer had to use dial up. We did not have to worry if someone phoned us and it was emergency. Now most of the time, the phone calls are either wrong numbers or telemarketers, but now the speed is so fast, we can download music files as if I were interested in downloading illegal files - not.

6. Jemina (2237) | 8 months ago | Well, congratulations. Maybe next time our internet would be able to penetrate even the neighboring planets LOL! I have tried dial up when I was in Thailand. The pages load so slowly and it takes forever to open multiple tabs simultaneously. Now we are using broadband and it's just fabulous! You click and it opens almost simultaneously.

| steph07 (29) | 8 months ago | yup broadband is great, i can not wait for all old cables to get exchanged by fiber, that's going to be even better.

|
Jemina (2237) | 8 months ago | You said it right. Plus the speed and connection stability. With wireless though sometimes the signal is not good and I think wireless is worse than dial-up. Well, maybe it depends where you are.

|
|
suspenseful (13377) | 7 months ago | Dial=up is not good here. Broadband is better and we do not get cut off. If you live where there are many phone exchangss, then dial-up might work. If you can get broad band go for it. Even if it is satellite broadband, like in areas with a lot of hills and mountains, that is better than dial up.
| |
|
|
Jemina (2237) | 7 months ago | I don't use dial-up anymore, we got a broadband now. I was just saying that wireless is sometimes better than dial-up and this was what I experienced when I was in Thailand.

suspenseful (13377) | 7 months ago | We have a wireless router, but we do not have any lap tops, but when I get mine, I will have to have my older son set it up. Also I think I need a new desk top. Mine is only a Pentium 4 and even though there is still a lot of space left, it appears that it does not have the power to run all my stuff.

suspenseful (13377) | 6 months ago | We now have a choice between cable and dsl, and we examined the pros and cons. With cable, we have three choices as to speed, with dsl only one and it is a bit slower than cable. With both we get telephone, but ours is digital. They have this bison as a mascot, a point against them. We also get television as they do, but we got high definition and they have so many little packages designed for the viewer, such as a family package, a children's package, an adult package, a learning package, whereas we have tiers so that someone who wants a bit out of each, can get them. I doubt that there would be action adventure with lots of bloodshed in a family package. Not that I like that, unless it is the hero taking out his pen knife and going after the bad guys who brutally murdered his family by torture.

9. Ldyjarhead (4860) | 8 months ago | I've got regular cable internet service and have never considered trying to upgrade from that. I'm more than satisfied with the service and can't justify a higher cost. Is there really that much of a difference in speed? I know it was a major jump from when I had dialup and was able to upgrade to cable/DSL, but I can't imagine what the next level might be like.

suspenseful (13377) | 8 months ago | It is twice as fast and unless you do a lot of downloads, like my husband with his radio plays, and me with my videos, photos, and music (not illegal), for an ordinary person, cable would be fine.
