I'm Watching You...Always... |
|
It seems that in the last 10-20 years stalking has become so common. You date someone, perhaps are married to them, you break up and suddenly they are everywhere. Following you, stealing your mail, maybe sneaking in your home. It’s creepy and dangerous. It can lead to kidnapping, hostage situations and possibly murder. A stalker will commonly come to the mindset that they can’t live without the other person or that they won’t let the other person live without them. Often the police will say that until they actually do something…they can’t do anything. Of course, once you’re maimed for life or worse, dead, then they’ll step in and do something. It’s not just with ppl you know either. Sometimes it can be a complete stranger. Celebrities have this problem a lot too. Some have gone so far as to give up their careers in order to escape a stalker. Thankfully, I’ve never had a full fledged stalker though my ex-b/f used to come by my Mom’s after we split up and try to get me to go for rides with him…the minute I noticed the gun in the car through the window I changed my mind quick. I may have overreacted but I wasn’t taking any chances. I think the laws need to be much stronger. So, have you ever had to deal with a stalker? Did they end up in jail? What do you think could be done to prevent it…if anything? Do you have any tips for dealing with a situation involving a stalker? Do you think the laws should be stronger? What if it was one of your grown children or a sibling in a stalker situation? **AT PEACE WITHIN** ~~STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS~~

1. scarlet_woman (4974) | 5 months ago | my mother has had a stalker since 1984. my brother and i have repeatedly called the cops- we have evidence, they won't do anything cause SHE won't report it. she's too afraid to. so basically, they won't do squat until he does. yes the laws need changed.badly.

kfrisk (2827) | 5 months ago | It's not the law that needs to be changed. Stalking is a federal crime and does not just include the physical aspects of it. But, yes, your mother does need to report it. The punishments for stalking are very harsh, even for cyper stalking. But there needs to be evidence and your mother needs to be willing to report it. Maybe you are just not talking to the right people.

2. Goodie123 (7045) | 5 months ago | I did have a B/F in my teens who my mum made me break up with. He would drive up and down our street all night long. Everywhere I went he followed me. Although he was not dangerous my mum had our local police officer talk to him. He did stop after that, but me being young and stupid thought it was great having a stalker.

3. wrdsofwisdm (730) | 5 months ago | I broke up with one idiot and he chose to park his car in front of my apartment window and sit there night and day. He didn't try to get in or grab me because he knew that I owned a firearm, lol. I did, however get fed up with the anxiety it was causing me. Fortunately my lease was almost up, so I called my uncle, told him the situation and he let me move into his big house 7 towns away. I stayed there for one year and the idiot finally moved back to his home town in Connecticut. I know that the standard thing to do is to file a restraining order or order of protection. This way if the stalker violates the order by getting with a certain amount of yards from you, the cops have to come out and make him/her leave. It's best to relocate if the victim feels the stalker is dangerous...and always be cautious of your surroundings wherever you are. That should be a standard rule either way. Better safe than sorry. Also, out here a woman with a restraining order didn't look before she got out of her car in the dark and went to feed a parking meter. Her ex shot her in the dark and she died. Her brother is petitioning for stalkers to have an ankle monitor that tracks their whereabouts. I think that's a good idea...it's a start anyway.

4. olivemai (2544) | 5 months ago | I do not think much can be done about! I do think it is good to be aware of, if you do have a stalker! The weirdest thing that can happen is, that the stalker can say that you are stalking him! Maybe videotaping the entrance to your house and windows will help, although it can be elsewhere that you are stalked!

5. book1962 (9495) | 5 months ago | I never had anything to do with real stalking. That ex bf of mine who showed up on the doorstep wanting to talk about everything and nothing was no stalker in my opinion, and I told him several times to stop that because we didnt have a relationship any more and that was it then when he had to accept my point of view on it. But that was about 30 years ago. As you say, things are different now and people are not afraid to stalk others. I think the laws should be much harder when it comes to that offense as it means your personal freedom and safety are at stake when someone does this to you. And I find it ridiculous that most of the time police or authorities dont do anything because its just a little phone terror or what ever else. As if that was not enough to make someones life absolutely miserable.

6. emeraldisle (9053) | 5 months ago | Stalkers are a serious problem. They can escalate and become more dangerous then just watching you. I have had a couple over the years. Thankfully my last one actually lived over in Europe, he was an Internet stalker. It taught me a few things and to be a bit more careful. I had to change my email, my IM accounts and even my phone number. I had on back in college. I have no idea who he was though. He left messages on my answering machine whenever I left my room. Now I had a private room and I was in an all girl dormitory and on the third floor. My room window faced a lake so I have to believe he lived in one of the houses across the lake and had a telescope or very good binoculars. I started changing my routines of where I parked my car, how I had my curtains, and when my lights were on in my room. The calls stopped. I never took it too the cops because back then there were no stalking laws. There are now and the ones here are pretty good. Of course a great deal depends on the state and what has been put into effect. I hope I never have to put them to the test though.

9. Hatley (10808) | 5 months ago | When I was in my twenties i worked as a nurses aid in our local hospital. I took care of a young man in his twenties who started a long time for a simple tonsilectomy. He got a crush on me and kept calling me asking for a date then he gbegan sending me flowers and that made me nervous so I agreed to have lunch with him as I wanted to let him know I was not interested in him. wellhe shocked me by bringing out a diamond ringand asking me to marry him. I told him gently that I was sorry but I was not in love with him and barely knew him . then he started telling me about how wealthy his dad was and asked me again . again I refused and he became furious and tried to hit me. I ran out of the cafe and got a cab to my apartment. it did not stop he would call and hang up so finally I went to the police and took out a restraining order on him. He came into the hospital and found me working in a patients room . He pulled out a knife and the orderly came in and knocked it outof his hand. the police were called and the young man was arrested. later I heard that his dad pulled strings to get him out of prison and they moved to some place in the eastern states.that was really a scarytime in my life.

10. angelwhispers30 (1630) | 5 months ago | I've had issues with a friend of mine who turned into a stalker. He was a good friend of mine and my partners. He called over one day in February and basically propositioned me. He told me to take some time to think about it and get back to him later. He told me he'd respect whatever decision I made. That same night, I emailed him and told him I was flattered but that I love my partner and had no intentions of cheating on him. He did not take that decision well, and he subjected me to weeks of emails and phone calls. Eventually, I just stopped responding, and so he started calling by the apartment. He can't get in the front door without a key, so he would buzz the door buzzer until I finally called Security. He removed him and told him to stay away from the building or the Police would be called. Instead, he started up a blog, added my blog to his blog roll and started checking my blog every day leaving comments and stuff. I deleted all his comments and blocked his IP address so he couldn't comment, and also put a filter on my email account so he couldn't email me either. Just last week he finally removed me from his blog roll, and stopped blogging. Now I'm awaiting his next move, because I don't believe I'm rid of him yet. In terms of tips, if you're being stalked, keep a log of their movements around you, and report them to the police. If it gets out of hand, don't hesitate, call 911! And most important, don't respond to their tactics, most stalkers get a kick out of watching their would be victims reactions to their games. If they don't get the reaction, they eventually become bored.
