barter - a thing of the past or a good idea for the future?

I have done this

for years whenever possible

I once exchanged a golden Ret

puppy for special insoles for my son's

feet and another for an amp for the kid's guitar

and many more trades through the years!

And you leave the tax man out of it! hehe

I would love to see the barter system make a big come back. I think it could happen with how the economy is. I do it with some people but would love to do it with more. It doesn't happen as a whole around here but it would be nice if it did. I think it could be beneficial to allow people to get services done they might not otherwise.

You still see it somewhat at yard sales, pawnshops, and etc..I think it will make a pretty good comeback.

I think most people are open to the idea of bartering, if only someone else would start off the conversation! The difficulty is always knowing what something is worth to the other person. And of course, you need to have something to offer that the other person needs.

One way around both problems is to join a barter group, where goods and services can be exchanged for a currency which you can use for other goods and services in the group. I don't know if such groups exist on any sort of scale in Canada, but in the UK there are groups called LETS schemes which do this.

I like the idea of it. I think it's friendlier, and it uses resources better. I've heard of clubs that do this where they trade time, and there's always the barter section of craigslist.

My dad does a lot of bartering. He'll help somebody with a repair, and they'll give him a thing or help him with a repair. I remember as a kid coming home to find that he'd traded our video camera for a vacuum cleaner.

I see most of these in the buy and sell mags here in my country. In the ad, they'll state what their item is and what they are willing to trade it for. There were a lot of ads on dogs being traded for some gadget like cellphones.:D

My Fiance and I were just talking about this the other day. With the price of everything going up, I wish that they would start bartering again. I am unaware if it has become illegal, but I would hope not. Bartering is a good way to help out other people as well as get what you want... I know that in reality barter still happens amongst friends... although I suppose in a different way.

Would I barter? Yes. Have I? In ways.
