Were you popular in high school? |
|
Do you think that affected who you are today in a positive or negative way and why? I was not what most would consider "popular" in high school. I was sad and had no self esteem. I didn't understand yet how to gain that self confidence that the "popular" kids seemed to have. I was miserable. For years after high school I remained that frightened, tormented little girl. Then when I turned about 26 I just stopped caring. I didn't care what people though of me. I didn't care what people said. And if you didn't like me then oh well. It was freeing. Now I am happy and I like who I am. I am living the life I want to live. I am following my dreams. I think for a long time it affected me in a very negative way. I spent a lot of years extremely depressed. I hated myself more every day and figured I was justified because those other kids hated me. They were cruel many times. But now I am so glad I had an experience like this because I learned how to overcome much because I went through such a tough time as a kid. I mean I think either way I would have turned out to be the person I am today. And not having that cliqiness in school would have made my teen life so much less painful but I made it through and I am living the life I want to be living. Many of them are not. So what was your high school experience and how do you think it affected who you are today?

The cliques in school can be awful and it doesn't seem like adults do much to stop this....in fact I think a lot of kids are really emulating their parents when they behave so poorly. I know for a fact that when my daughter came home from school talking bad about another girl in her class I was horrified. She kept talking about how janie did this and janie did that and janie didn't wear good clothes..so I told my daughter that I didn't want to hear bad things about this girl. She was to find one thing she liked about her the very next day and report to me. I knew this girl came from a very poor, broken home and was a sad little girl and I was determined my daughter would treat her better. So the next day my daughter came home and I told her to tell me what good thing she found out about this girl and she said that jamie had thrown up her lunch...I said that isn't something nice! She said...mom, jamie said she threw up her lunch because she ate too fast. You see she had no supper, and no breakfast and so she ate too fast at lunch because she was starving! My daughter looked at her much better after she got to know her circumstances and I think I taught her some compassion. But some parents don't! I am so sorry you went through what a lot of us have gone through but I am so glad you realize that people don't matter; you do! And what you feel about yourself is all that matters! We are happy to be your friend and we will always listen to you! Thanks for this interesting discussion!!

2. minnie_98214 (3608) | 3 months ago | I was nothing in high school and I dont mean that in a bad way I was what some would call a floater I guess. I made friends with most people but never really hung out with a certain group of people. I never liked the way schools just grouped people up so I just went all over.

4. _Honey_ (168) | 3 months ago | To give you a straight answer, no, I'm not popular in highschool. In fact I was some kind of a nobody. Way back then, physically speaking, I wasn't attractive. I wasn't one of the highschool boys and girls whom they labelled as "biggest crush" or highschool heartthrobs. I never felt despair about it coz for some reason, deep inside, i knew i'm beautiful. hehehe... In fact, I compensate. I was one of the students whom our teachers would expect to get good grades. And so I was. I never had boyfriends back in highschool and I just focused to my studies which made it easier for me to get in to one of the top State Universities in our country. Now, I'm working for a multinational oil company. I can say I age gracefully. I feel beautiful, accomplished enough for my age and I'm happy. I always look back on my past and how it contributed to who I am right now and who I'm gonna be in the future. I think, that is what matters.

5. LouRhi (672) | 3 months ago | I certainly was not part of the popular group and while at the time I desperately wanted to be, now I wonder why that was. I had my own small but special group of friends who for the most part were there for me and some still are today, however I also recall feeling rather alone as well. Like you I now have the attitude of like me or leave me. Though it was also present in my younger day it is a lot stronger now. In the past I never tried to change myself to fit in, but it did bother me that people would not accept me for who I was. Today I am for the most part happy with who I am and what I have become.

6. Bd200789 (1127) | 3 months ago | I was the same way in school. I was really shy, and only had a few friends who didn't rally care about me. I was really insecure, and didn't know how to make real friends. I still don't.

8. a4aniruddh (481) | 3 months ago | I was never popular in my whole student life itself. But i think it never done any thing wrong to me also. As i am now at that time also i was like just go to school and and come back to room. So i dont thing it will affect your confidence leve inn after ages. For building confidence what you can do is you can do some yoga, meditation. It will help you a lot.

9. kgwat70 (9963) | 3 months ago | I was not very popular in high school though I made some good friends while in school. I was known as the shyest/quietest person in my class and today I am still somewhat shy, especially around women but not as much as I was then. I do not worry about what people think of me now and live my life the way that I want to live it. I only keep in touch now with one person from high school as the others moved on. High school did help me to mature and learn more about myself and other people. Even though I was not popular, it was a positive experience.

10. drumbum04 (158) | 3 months ago | I do not want to be the judge of that but back in high school, I have lots of friends from different year levels. I was elected as the academic chairperson in school and socio-cultural chairperson. I was also awarded as the best drummer in school. I was the topnocher of our class. I have to say that I garnered a lot of awards in high school and I gained many friends that I still keep in touch with and hang out with up to now. The question is am I popular in high school? Maybe or maybe not. I have a lot of achievements but having a lot of achievements does not necessarily make you popular. Having a lot of friends will surely make you popular.
