I Got Hit By a Truck Today |
OK, nothing serious, but I am MAJORLY pissed. I was returning to my parked car while on one of my daily bike rides. A bit more than five miles from where I'd parked my car, I was coming down the sidewalk. I came to an area where a small pick-up truck was stopped with his signal light on for a right turn. The truck had a stop sign on his street. I had none. I had the right-of-way. The guy in the truck wasn't paying any attention to the traffic. He was looking down, and it turned out he was dialing his cell phone. Well, I, after making a stop (which I wasn't required to make), I proceeded to cross the street. At the moment I started, this idiot did too, hitting my hip in the process and knocking me over. Of course I, being the lighter of the two (man with bike vs. man with pick-up) landed on my a$$ on the street. Since he was starting from a dead-stop, as was I, he wasn't moving fast enough to really hurt me. My bottle of Fruit20 fell out of its holder; my digital camera hit the street. When the bike hit the street my rear-view mirror shattered. OK, I was a wreck except for a cut on my left shin bone and some bruises on my left arm and shoulder. I don't know why, but I grabbed my camera to make sure it was OK. I think it is. I got up, steadied my bike on its stand, and asked the guy for his insurance information. Did he give it to me? No! Instead the pri(k drove off while talking on his cell phone. I could hear him saying, "Some a$$hole just pulled out in front of me and I almost hit him!" The b*stard DID hit this a$$hole! I wasn't fast enough to get a picture of his license number. Too bad for me. Right now I feel OK, except for still being shaken up. But BOY would I love to have had the chance to get his # and report the b*stard to the police! I wish I could understand why people NEED to use their cell phones when driving. If I have that need, I wait until I can pull into an off-street or into a shopping center parking lot. I do my best not to put others at risk. I just wish to hell others felt that way. I KNEW something like this would happen since I go biking every day of the week, and I've had too many close calls in the past. Memo to self: Write your epitaph, RJ. Your time is near. 1. rockvixen (821) | 2 months ago | Wow! Well thank God you're ok. What an a$$ of a guy to do that to you. I mean he nearly killed you and then as you ask for his insurance, he speeds off. I have always felt that drivers, should NOT be on ther stupid cell phone. That's what causes accidents most often. Cell phone calls can wait until the driver has actually stopped somewhere, where he/she will be at for awhile. There are people like that guy all over, they commit a crime or hurt someone, then leave the scene as if nothing happend. He didn't leave because he was a a$$, we know he was, he left because he knew he was in trouble. To bad you could not take a pic of the truck, at least to know what he looked like. Just be careful, and God bless. I know you feel like it's your time, but it is not you. It's those crazy cell phone drivers out there.

2. katsmeow1213 (937) | 2 months ago | OMG that would have made me so mad. I would have immediatly started screaming at him. What a jerk! Did you call the cops anyways? I would have. It's illegal to drive while talking on the cell phone in this state, not that anyone cares, they still do it.
| |
| |
rjscott (1582) | 2 months ago | Kats, I'm sorry to say that I don't know WHAT the laws state in Florida regarding talking on cell phones. I just know I never do it. Nothing is THAT urgent that it can't wait until I get to the side of the road or into a mall parking lot. The only reason I use my cell is to "report in," saying that I'm on my way home ... and to ask if there's anything needed from the grocey store before I head home. MY cell is not permanently attached to my ear!
| |
katsmeow1213 (937) | 2 months ago | Actually, in NY state, the law is you must have a hands free set to talk on the cellphone while driving. I don't even own a cellphone, and never have. I'm not against them in general, I just can't afford one and never leave my house so it's not necessary. My husband has had one a few times, and probably should get one now due to his job, but again, we can't afford it. We'd never talk while driving even if we did have one. You're right, nothing is that important.

rjscott (1582) | 2 months ago | Ayumitakashi, it all happened so fast. I sure wasn't prepared for him to just drive off. I'd like to think that if I'd been badly hurt, he would have had the courtesy to offer to help me. But you just never know these days. I'm glad the bike wasn't damaged or I would have had to walk back to my car pushing a damaged bike.

ayumitakashi (1907) | 2 months ago | Yeah I'm glad that neither you nor the bike was damaged but what nerve of that guy huh. People these days are just so careless.

Out of a grocery store parking lot. I was On the sidewalk w/ My 10 speed ( I just went through the Cross=walk with it. I got on My bike and started pedaling and Insted of Hitting the Brake.....Grandmaw excellerated just enough to Hit me in the left hip. I flew up on the Hood of her Car! She got upset at Me for Being on her CAr! I was so upset and Shaken.....that I jumped Back Off her Car and Headed straight for Home. I've Been in a few Close calls out there excercising.....It's Dangerous Out there!!!!!! Be Careful Sweetie!!!!

rjscott (1582) | 2 months ago | WOW! That sounds a LOT like what happened to me, but when the man in the truck accellerated, it was from a dead stop, so he was barely moving. I waivered a few feet with the bike and simply lost balance and fell. Having landed on the lady's hood, you could have been seriously hurt. Me? I'm merely sore on certain parts of my body today, with a large yellowish-blue spot on my hip. Dangerous? WOW! You sure got that right. There are so many times I've had close calls in the past, but this was the closest.

6. novataylor (1500) | 2 months ago | Bicyclists are second class citizens, rj. I should know, I'm one of them. Sometimes I think we must be invisible because it sure seems that way. And drivers don't seem to think that we belong on the road either. I swear, I can be riding right over the painted 'bike route' sign on the street, but be yelled at by a driver as he speeds by me. People on the sidewalks don't want us, and neither do people in cars. We take our lives into our hands every day we're out there. I'm so glad to know that you have a rear view mirror although now you'll have to get a new one. I hate to ride without one. And I really hope your camera's ok too, rj, it would be such a shame if it weren't. I'm also rather happy that you're still intact and in one piece - you could have been smashed flat. The driver needs to be flogged severely. Now's one of those times you wish for instant karma. Maybe it'll come. I'm crossing my fingers for you. You'll be sore tomorrow, and moreso the next day, so take a nice long soak and be good to yourself tonight. Please.

rjscott (1582) | 2 months ago | Yes we are second-class citizens, Nova. As mentioned earlier on, the truck driver was barely moving when he "nudged" me. Instant karma would have been nice, and yes, I am sore today. Likely no bike ride for me today and possibly even tomorrow. Oh, the camera IS OK!

7. dragon54u (2029) | 2 months ago | So, reading your replies, you didn't call the cops?! Do it now!! He'll probably have some sort of damage to the truck and you can describe both the driver and the truck. Next time he might kill somebody! I'm glad you're alright, but you really need to try to get this jerk off the road or at least paying attention!!! Please call the cops? Cell phones should be illegal while driving or biking. I was going down a main highway last weekend on my way to see my dad and there were two bicyclists on the side, one was weaving side to side and I had to slow down to let oncoming traffic pass so I could give her a wide berth--as I passed, I saw she was TEXTING ON HER CELL!!!! Not even watching the road. What an idiot...

rjscott (1582) | 2 months ago | Dragon, in all honesty I couldn't tell you (or the cops) what kind of truck it was other than that it was black. I haven't a clue what the guy looked like. I was too busy tending to me. I looked at him only enough to ask him for his insurance card. (I suppose) when he realized that I was "OK enough" to ask for his insurance information he might have realized that I wasn't hurt. That was when he drove off. The only one thing I'd be able to tell the police is that "a man in a black pick-up truck headed north after hitting me." Like the driver of the truck, they'd probably laugh and move on. I can't believe that ANYONE would be idiotic enough to TEXT while riding a bike. If you read my discussion, I Found $1,800 Today," posted on Wednesday, I describe the absolute difficulty I had trying to ride my bike back to my car with a teeny Yorksire terrier in my left arm. It's impossible to steer, shift or brake except at minimum speed. I think cell phones will be the death of many motorists, pedestrians and bikers if we don't wise up SOON!

8. Transdisc (12106) | 2 months ago | Sheesh, what a rotten thing to happen, rjscott! It's bad enough to get hit like that, but then he has the audacity to pull away like that?? What in the heck is wrong with people? I was once hit in a similar way when I had my motorcycle. The guy didn't even stop, even though I ended up sliding down the highway on my back. He knew he hit me because he braked and slowed, then kept going. I was pissed at the time that I didn't have the presence of mind to memorize his license plate as I was sliding down the highway. Don't be too hard on yourself for not getting a photo of his tag. That guy should have had the decency to offer you all the help he possibly could have offered you. Was your bike damaged?
| |
| |
rjscott (1582) | 2 months ago | Hiya Trans ... boy, sounds like YOU got hit good. I wonder if the guy who hit you, as well as the guy who hit me might have been drinking. That might be the reason they drove off since a drunk/drinking driver would be looked at in a much different light than a little old lady who "merely" used poor judgment. No, except for the mirror that was shattered the bike wasn't damaged. He never hit the bike. He merely "nudged" me.

9. Hatley (8702) | 2 months ago | rjscott I am so glad you are not seriously hurt,he could have sent you to the hospital the horse's rear end.then to drive off and just leave you he has to be the world's worst jerk. People and their cell phones its a wonder they dont take them into the bath room with them. I am sorry you did not get the jerk's license number that would have at least made up for some of what happened. take care now.
| |
| |
rjscott (1582) | 2 months ago | Thanks Hatley. I wish I'd gotten his license number too, especially now that I realize the person has no regard for his fellow man. The only thing he'd have to "make up for" though, is the cost of a new rear-view mirror, about $11.95 for the kind I had.

Speaking of which, they're supposed to be my guardian angels when I'm out riding, since I do so much of it. I wonder if they might have been having tea when the incident happened yesterday. :D
