The Devil in the White City by Erik Larson. email this discussion to a friend?

The Devil in the White City by Erik Larson was utterly fantastic. The book intertwines the tale of the1893 World's Fair in Chicago with a cunning serial killer H. H. Holmes. Both stories were fascinating, but the story of Holmes was far more riveting, this guy was so calculating and demonic it was unbelievable. He actually builds a house with a furnace big enough to cremate people in his basement and had secret rooms in his hotel for killing guests. Everybody loved him and no one would have imagined what he was up to. This book is definitely one for true crime and history buffs, because the intertwining of the stories was riveting. Erik Larson could write about corn-on-the-cob in the middle of the Sahara and make it interesting. This book was awesome! Did anybody else read this book? What did you think of it?

P.S. I wrote this review for Helium.

Oh I read this several years ago. It was a great book. The city is trying to show itself off for the World's Fair and just a short distance from the site is a serial killer. It's not like the city tried to cover it up either, they had no idea. That is how good Holmes was. He was at it for years before finally being caught. Larson is a great writer.
