What do you think about leaving a baby or small child alone in a car? email this discussion to a friend?

I am sure you have heard about people leaving there children in cars to shop or gamble, but what are you thoughts about leaving them "just for a minute" to pay for gas or to go into school to pick up another child. Once I had a friend tell me it was such a hassle to get her newborn out of the car while she came up to the school and waited for her older son to get out of school. There are a lot of people right around where I live that leave kids in cars to do this. I think it is wrong. My husband and I have always either taken our child with us or have one wait in the car with her while the other paid for gas or did whatever. We have always been afraid something could happen and didn't want her left alone.

We had a thing happen a few weeks,a woman left her baby in the car sleeping, done just what you said went in to pay for gas, someone took her car, lead the police on a high speed chase, finaly stopped and jumped out and ran, baby was ok.I don`t know if they caught the man or not.but the point is it only takes a second.and your whole life can change very quick.this world has gone all wacky.it just isn`t worth taking chances.

So many people just think nothing is going to happen but you never do know. You are so right, it isn't worth taking the chance. Thanks for your opinion.

I don't think a newborn or any other child should be left in a car for even a fraction of a second. Having a child is a responsibility and should be taken very seriously. Look how many kids come up missing everyday. Just because it is too much of a hassle to take a newborn out of the car is no excuse. How old is this mother? She sounds awful immature. Course if there are a lot of people around there that do the same thing I guess those people don't realize the chance they are taking with their child. Kids should be safeguarded at all costs. They are precious and need protection from preditors.

The woman that said that is in her 30's. I thought that was so pathetic that she said that. Why have a second child if it is such a hassle?

Hi Ruth:

If people get tickets for leaving a dog in a car without a window open and water inside I thinkk it is terrible for parents to leave children alone.

They could be abducted.

If it is a hot day they could die.

They should be arrested.

Have a great evening.

Leaving them in the car to gamble or go shopping is abuse. Leaving them in the car for 2 seconds to drop a letter off in the mailbox where you have clear view of the car is not. I've done that and we all have. I wouldn't dare leave my kids in the car alone at a shopping mall or a gas station. I've seen on the news a lot recently that parents left their kids in the car with the engine running and people hijacked the cars and took the kids for a joyride before throwing them out of the car. Sometimes, they were thrown out of the window, carseat and all.

Thanks for your view point. Everyone has different ideas on how long is too long to leave a child alone in a car.

I think in this day it is a dangerous thing to do. Someone may take a liking to the car and take it. Or anything not good can happen. After all it only takes a minute.I wouldn't do that for anything. It may not be the most convenient thing to do, but it will be the safest. Keep both eyes on the kids.

so many people around my small town do it even the daycare providers do when picking up their kids or charges or when getting gas. Sure it is a small town but bad things happen here too.

I remember years ago, my cousin left her two year old son in her car, just to get a newspaper. Her son was asleep and she didn't want to wake him up, she thought she will be back in couple of minutes. She had to cross the street and while she was paying for newspaper, her son woke up, opened the door and ran across the street. She watched her son got hit by the car and he died right on the spot.
I will never forget that tragic accident and I don't ever leave my children alone anywhere.

that is so awful. I am sure she will be blaming herself forever.
I have seen cases also where the kid will put the car into gear and get in an accident. When I was growing up that happened at the gas station and the toddler drove into a house.

I think people that do this are out of their minds. I don't think there is any excuse for this. you're putting your kids life in danger, and time and time again kids have died being left in the car.

I do agree. A few years back our legislature was trying to get a bill passed that would consider leaving a child alone in a car a crime. That came from a case where a woman who normally didn't take her daughter into daycare and for some reason she was supposed to that day and she forgot her baby in the car for 8 hours while she went to work and the baby died.

I could never do this. We waited 39 for our child and my worst nightmare is if something happened to him or someone took him. If one cannot view this as a heart matter then logic and reason alone would dictate that it's not a good idea.
1) Some one could jump in and steal the child.
2) Some one could jump in and steal the car.
3) A toddler can get themselves out of the carseat and get out of the car or put the car in gear, or lock the parent out of the car
I could go on and on, but you get the picture. It's just not a good thing to do. Unless you are only a few feet away and you have clear visual of the car anc child, I can't see doing anything like this. Just my personal opinion. I'm with you on this one.

Well I've seen people do things like that many times. They leave their children in, in running car. once i saw a child in the drivers seat of a car with the engine on an everything, no one was in the car to supervise the child. People leave their kids in cars when they go to make groceries, do business in the bank. And if they go to visit a friend and that child may be one to talk alot, that child stays right in the car. This has become an every day thing, no one cares about the well fair of children anymore. Most parents think about them selfs(not all).

I think it shouldnt be done...EVER.

Its almost shocking to know that people still do leave their babies/children in the car for a "minute". All the stories you see on the news.

I know alot of people who live in very small towns do it because alot of people corralate small with safe..No town is safe, not even the smallest one. you never know what creep could just hop in your car during that "minute" and drive off with your children.

Or how curious your little one might get and start messing with the car, which could lead to many tragic things.

so parents take your children out of the vehicle with you.

it is scary to know that there are people out there who still leave their kids alone with the way the world is.

oh its horrifying knowing that, so many incidents regarding children could be prevented if Parents took the few minutes to get their kids out of the car to go in wherever with em.

Isn't it amazing how people think small towns are safe and nothing bad will happen? People around here don't even lock doors when they are gone or at night when they are sleeping.
