Father jailed for daughter's failure to get GED |
|
For those of you who aren't familiar with it, a GED is a general equivalence degree that's equal to a high school graduation diploma. In my state, a girl whose parents divorced years ago would skip school whenever she stayed with her mother and dropped out when she got pregnant. The court ordered her dad, who had main custody of her, to make sure she got her GED by age 18. Well, she didn't and now the dad is in jail for 180 days or until she gets her GED. She feels bad about it but in the interview she didn't cite any concrete plans to get the GED. Do you think it's fair to jail the dad? He'll probably lose his job and that'll throw his life into chaos. Should he have pushed harder? The girl turned 18 not recently, which was the limit the court established for getting her GED. She's had 2 years to get it, he and the mother have had 2 years to try to get her to fulfill the court order.

1. Pitgull (715) | 3 months ago | What about her mother? Why isn't her mother being held responsible? He had main custody, yes, but her problems resulted from her mother's. Her mother didn't make sure she was going to school, how does the father have any control over her duties to her daughter? He doesn't live in the mother's house with her, that's the mother's job..... that's ridiculous...there must be something else...

I know how hard it is to make a kid go to school; my youngest son dropped out in his senior year and there was nothing I could do about it. But his dad and I (this was just after my husband left us) encouraged him to get his GED and he did, within a few months. We were both very upset about it but it turned out ok. So why shouldn't the mom be held liable, too? The only thing I can think of is that maybe she's helping take care of the baby and jailing her would be counter-productive for the grandchild. Either way, it's not fair to the dad!

2. kebpete (6924) | 3 months ago | I agree with response 1 why is the mother not held responsible i guess it is because the dad was told to make she got it.I really dont think this fair,to punish him for her being one of those kids who just does not care, what happens to there parents,if any they should put her in jail.Kids now a days gripe my but.

dragon54u (2408) | 3 months ago | I agree it's not fair. The girl doesn't seem to want to get her GED and says she feels bad that her dad is in jail but then why not get the GED before it came to that? Totally unfair to the parents. And most states allow a child to drop out of school when they're 16--I don't agree with that, either, but there you go.

3. thelastwolf113 (1148) | 3 months ago | This is ridiculous, they let the kids drop out at age 16 WITHOUT parental consent, yet it's up to the parents to force them into school. And since when is education forced after the age of 16. This girl is 18, and a parent herself, who has the authority to force her to do anything? I am getting angry, it's unfair to the father. The mother is not the main custodian, therefore, she isn't going to get penalized because she isn't the parent of record.

dragon54u (2408) | 3 months ago | Right. It seems to me that the court is heavy-handed in this case. Sure, they want the girl to get a GED so she can support her child but levy the punishment on HER, not her dad! She's of age to take responsibility for her actions.

4. ayumitakashi (2017) | 3 months ago | As I agree with the other posters before me. It's not fair that the father was taken to jail. Even though he does have primary custody the mother should have been hold accountable for what happened. I feel really sorry for what the father is going through. To have to go to jail for something as dumb as this it's just so crazy.

dragon54u (2408) | 3 months ago | What's really crazy is that the daughter cares so little about her dad that she let him go to jail rather than improve herself and give herself a better future.
