Is Gandhism still relevant...?

I don't know a lot about Gandhism as I was bought up in the UK. From what little I do know I can't agree that it is always the right way. If someone comes up to you in the street with a knife and stabs you, will you turn the other cheek? If someone breaks into your home to burgle you and potentially harm your family members will you smile and let them get on with it and turn the other cheek? I am a woman and even though I have a hot temper verbally, I do not like violence, but that does not mean I would happily let someone walk all over me and take what is mine or hurt those that are dear to me.

Frankly writing, I really appreciate Gandhism and Mahatma Gandhi is my idol..but I don't think his principles are still being applied nowadays...You strongly believed that Gandhism is still relevant today and it will always be relevant but its application is decreasing nowadays. Everywhere in this world, we can see violence, racial discrimination, terrorist attacks, prejudice and hatred. Why human is doing like this? Humanity is moving towards its self-destruction. I believe that if the principles of Mahatma Gandhi are applied worldwide, the world can be saved. The world can become peaceful and love for mankind will rise. What do you say?
