When Does Opinion Become Abuse |
|
I know when someone starts calling others idiots and morons, that is abuse. However, is it okay with you if people tell you that you are going to hell, hate God and such? To me it is the height of rudeness to tell someone they are going to hell. It is not an informed opinion, it's mean and ill spirited and unless you are in charge of heaven's gate, I think it's report worthy. Just a thought.

1. thepheonix (156) | 3 months ago | i think when people try to take opinions in a negative way not even concentrating on the fact that they are just opinions and have to be ignored if some useless is being processed well what i am trying to say is every one says his own opinion about things but he should be careful only to tell his opinion and should not hurt others feeling which will become an abuse

2. dragon54u (2383) | 3 months ago | That kind of thing usually comes from people who feel smug and self-righteous. What they don't realize is that their behavior isn't very pleasing to God. I think those kind of people need a good knuckle sandwich. But then, that'd probably fuel their martyr complex.

Anhedonia (1779) | 3 months ago | Well yes, I wouldn't want to be accused of religious persecution for not allowing people to tell others they are hellbound.

tigertang (1429) | 3 months ago | Well, I don't know. As I grow older, I've found that those who claim they speak for God and anyone who does not follow their version of God is doomed are usually those who are furthest away from God. So, yes, it's rude and disrespectful to others when you start condeming them for having different belief systems. However, when such people go on about their God being the right one and mine being the wrong one, the best I can do is to smile, they may be rude but why should I feel offended, I should pity them for being so far away from God.

3. souless_tragedy (233) | 3 months ago | I agree that attacking someones religious views and the fate of their after-life is WAY out of line. It's absolutly uncalled for and shouldn't be allowed in any way. I think to be a strong community we need to share tolerance of all others and keep any negative comments to ourselves. By all means we should speak out minds, but not with malicious intent.

4. sisterjinx (900) | 3 months ago | I've had many many Christians get to know me and tell me what a wonderful and beautiful person I am. They go on and on about how strong I am and what a good person I am and then they tell me how sad they are that I will be going to hell to burn for all eternity. I know this is what they believe and I usually just smile and say we'll see. Some leave it at that and others see that as an opening to save me. Either way I simply brush it off because I have to respect their strong faith and belief. Why do I feel that way? Because I believe you treat others as you wish to be treated. Not treat others as they treat you. I want people to respect me for who I am and respect that my beliefs differ from theirs. If I expect this from others than I must treat them with the same respect even if they don't always treat me with it. I do think that it comes across as rude and abrasive but it is part of their strong belief system and they believe that it is their DUTY to inform others of the perils that await them, according to the Christian beliefs. I respect that they feel the need to inform me and simply move on with my day. They did their duty and I might have given my msg as well. We both walk away feeling we have done our best.

sisterjinx (900) | 3 months ago | Well, there is always the other way to handle this. Sometimes this is kind of fun.:) Of course it is the truth as well. Quote the bible back at them. "Judge Not, Lest Ye Be Judged" And then thank them kindly for their opinion. If you can remain a good person when they are not being such a good person it speaks to your character. This is much better than becoming the person that they expect you will become. It is sad that people feel the need to be rude in these types of communities or anywhere for that matter. It's sad that people feel they have a right to judge. I'm sorry that you or your friends have felt the difficulty of this.

5. kamran12 (1809) | 3 months ago | I totally agree with you, Anhednia, in spirit. Telling someone that they are going to hell, is one of the worst form of abuse. Saying to someone that they are away from GOD's love is a kind of judgment that, in my view, only GOD is entitled to make. Plus, It comes from none but our arrogance that we assume for ourselves that we aren't entitled to. Sometimes, I wonder how GOD will treat such people who are pushing people away from HIM by declaring them not worthy of HIS love and blessing. For me, personally, and maybe actually too, it doesn't matter at all. It can cause someone disappointed though and that's where I see problem for THOSE who say it.

Anhedonia (1779) | 3 months ago | I find some things said under the umbrella of religious opinion to be much more personally offensive than anything else, but I suppose that is just me. Thanks, Kamran.

kamran12 (1809) | 3 months ago | I understand your point Anhedonia. What I was trying to say, when I said that personally it doesn't matter to me, is because if someone tells me that I am going to hell, it wouldn't make their saying a GOD's judgment. What matters to me, and for me, is what GOD's judgment is about me. Whatever anyone else says is of no value. It doesn't mean that I don't consider it an abuse, in fact, as I said, it is one of the worst form of abuse. You are not alone, my friend!

6. tjades (780) | 3 months ago | I dont think it amounts to abuse interms of someone saying it here but it does denote arrogance and rudeness on the part of the sayer. I have seen both religious and non religious persons get real mean to each other on here both telling each other where they were going to end up or where to put their opinions. The first terms you mentioned idiots, morons etc... amounts to name calling which is just not acceptable on a discussion site unless it was a Jerry Springer type site. Even though I do not consider telling someone they are going to hell an abuse I wouldnt mind it being against the rules as it is rude to assume the position of a God that one would preach of as being loving and forgiving and to impose that belief on others. We need to learn to discuss and relay our views in an acceptable and respectable manner. (lol)

7. pyewacket (7831) | 3 months ago | My goodness..I sure hope you weren't attacked this way. Unfortunately one has to take this kind of thing with a grain of salt. You have to realize that in certain religious sects (especially some Christian ones) many are truly and honestly brought up with the belief that only those that follow a certain belief (theirs) will go to Heaven...and that the only way to Salvation and to go to heaven is through Christ...uh, well, gee, like what about the rest of us? They do believe that anyone not following their beliefs are condemned to Hell or Purgatory...so I guess with that concept, the vast majority of us are then going to Hell...well naturally I don't believe this at all...my belief that when we die, we all wind up in an "otherworld" ..a heaven type place...mmm..so it's going to be a rude awakening when people die that do have that belief and think like that, are going to be rubbing elbows in the spirit world with Buddhist, Hindus, Jews, Muslims and other Christians so no, it's not necessarily "abuse" when someone says you're going to hell...to me it's just pure ignorance that's all due to their firm, ironclad beliefs.

8. sparkofinsanity (1516) | 3 months ago | Opinion becomes abuse the minute disrespect is shown. It is one thing to speak sternly and strongly - but as long as respect is still evident, it is simply an opinion. But to get personal, to make fun, to use bad language, to ridicule or to patronize another person, is abuse and should be treated as such.

9. Angelwhispers (4402) | 3 months ago | Anhedonia, there are so many ways to temper your opinion with respect and still give a passionate response. As soon as I see someone start with an aggressive tone, that person then loses my attention. Respect my opinion and we can calmly respectively talk about yours. You can not tell anyone he/she is going to hell unless you are God. You have no idea what is in that persons heart for real. Nor do we know the mind of God.
