A couple of months ago, my husband felt sudden pain on his body. He can't move, as in powerless. So i decided to bring him to the hospital. They found out that my husband is diabetic. I can't remember the terms that they used because it's all in korean. He's still under medication 'till now. The doctor said that i should be more careful of what food should i give for my husband. That's why I'm asking you this question.

Hi there, try not to cook fatty foods and too much carbohydrates (rice, maize meal, potatoes)can be very dangerous. Give him more more green & red/orange veges more and he is going to need more calcium in body (milk, low fat cheese). All in all, a healthy diet is good enough for diabetic person. Think of foods you'd cut down on if you needed to lose weight - Hope this helps.

Hi Mamuzo...thanks for your comment. . I will try these suggestions, although koreans are rice lovers. From breakfast till dinner. But he needs to sacrifice for his own health.

I am a diabetic too. All I can say is, it's pretty difficult to stop someone from eating how they've been eating all their life.
Diet clearly doesn't work that much since we are not supposed to feel hunger or starve since we'll have tendency to pass out or get dizzy.
The best way as my diabetic-expert doctor would say is, nothing beats exercise.
He needs to at least run or jog a few minutes a day. Just enough to sweat it in or increase his pulse/heart rate. This is the only way for people to increase their good cholesterol levels (no medicine could ever accomplish this~ don't ever believe in medicines/supplements that say they can since this is a normal body chemical reaction when exercising).
Then of course, stay away from preservatives.
I say the best way for him to 'know' or be aware of his sugar is by monitoring it. I have my own sugar monitor (where you pr*ck yourself~ it's not really painful if you know where it should be). Because once a person sees that his/her eating affects the sugar levels, he wouldn't need much convincing to tell him/her to stop excessive eating.=)
Good luck.

myLot reputation of 93/100. arlene05kang (169)   ranked 198 out of 640 in diabetes  3 months ago

Thanks for the comment...I guess i need to buy him a sugar monitoring...(what's the term for that?)Is it also normal for a diabetic to get tired quickly? Thanks so much.

myLot reputation of 92/100. longbangod (1067)  3 months ago

I agree, exercise is good also, this could really help lower blood sugar level..

danaseilhan (78)  3 months ago

Um, no, wrongwrongwrong. The number one most important thing as a diabetic that you have to change is what you eat. Exercise helps, but it's only a fraction of what you need to do. You could sit around on the couch all day but if you eat the right foods and avoid the wrong ones you're still going to do your body a world of good.

It's not enough to say "I can't" or "it's hard," the question is whether continuing to eat bread, rice, and potatoes is worth losing a leg or your eyesight or your kidneys. Is it really worth it? It's possible to give them up. People do it every day.

myLot reputation of 96/100. laydee (1446)   ranked 473 out of 640 in diabetes  3 months ago

Nope, it's not about food.. Yes diet does help but it's wrong to starve yourself with food you're not really accustomed to eating. You can still eat right without starving. Plus, we diabetics are not allowed to go hungry or else we will go hypoglycemic. Exercise is the best because when you exercise you're not only focusing on keeping your blood sugar low, but you're also going to appreciate what you eat because a lot of people there are like you:) You can work as a team.

It's called Blood Glucose Monitor.

=)

Thanks for the Best Response, by the way.

If the doctor told your husband that he is a diabetic and gave him medication he should have given him a list of foods that he can and can not eat. Some doctors sends their patients to a dietitian and they will give him a diet that he should stick to. I would go back to the doctor and ask for printed material of the foods he needs to avoid.

myLot reputation of 93/100. arlene05kang (169)   ranked 198 out of 640 in diabetes  3 months ago

Thanks for the comment...but my husband's doctor didn't gave him any list. He's going to visit his doctor today. I will remind him to ask for a list. Thanks.

all of us, eat lots of veggies and fruits and some lo fat'
dairy such as eggs and lo fat milk, and some lean protein
fish and chicken are best, skinless chicken, and lots of
whole grain foods like whole grain breads and cereals and pastas
but you should get also some guidance from a dietiation who can show you how many carbs your husband can eat inone day.we all
vary. your insurance should cover going to a dietition for
food help. also vist the amereican diabetes assoc. on the internet for help in planning meals. You do need to seek help
from a dietetican at first.

Hi Arlene, you got a lot of good suggestions here. My father was also diabetic but we knew it at a very late stage already.

I remember when he was sick my mother used to let him eat so much fruits, whick later we knew he should not eat those since fruits are sweet.

My landlady also was a diabetic, and I remember she could still eat rice but at a very controlled quantity.

You ask your doctor for some food supplement or herbal preparations like pure aloe vera extracts, those are very helpful also in lowering blood sugar.

I hope your husband will achieve a lower if not really normal sugar level in his blood soon...

Diabetic Diet

If you have diabetes, your body cannot make or properly use insulin. This leads to high blood glucose, or sugar, levels in your blood. Healthy eating helps to reduce your blood sugar. It is a critical part of managing your diabetes, because controlling your blood sugar can prevent the complications of diabetes.

Wise food choices are a foundation of diabetes treatment. Diabetes experts suggest meal plans that are flexible and take your lifestyle and other health needs into account. A registered dietitian can help you design a meal plan.

Healthy diabetic eating includes

Limiting sweets
Eating often
Being careful about when and how many carbohydrates you eat
Eating lots of whole-grain foods, fruits and vegetables
Eating less fat
Limiting your use of alcohol

danaseilhan (78)  3 months ago

I have to disagree. No matter whether it's "whole" or not, anything with a lot of starch in it's going to raise your blood sugar. When you are diabetic it doesn't matter how fast it happens, it's still going to be dangerous. It is better for a diabetic to reduce the sources of sugar in their diet rather than have to rely on drugs to keep blood sugar down.

And there is nothing wrong with eating fat as a diabetic. (For that matter there's nothing wrong with*anybody* eating fat, unless you are missing your gallbladder.) That's a myth. There's no good science to prove that eating fat causes any health problems whatsoever. Actually, things like high LDL cholesterol and high triglycerides are associated with high*carbohydrate* intake. I know it makes no sense based on everything you've heard, but it's true.

hey arlene. Im also a diabetic type 2. I have maintenance medications to kinda lower down my blood sugar. I was advice not to eat fatty foods, of course stay away from sweets and most of all no carbohydrates or if he cant stay away from it, try to lessen it..because carb most of all turn into sugar when digested by the body..do not use sweeteners coz they still have a small amount of sugar..It's now time to read every single labels on every food or products that you will buy..Check the ingredients and the amount of carb and sugar written..Going on a sugarfree diet is the best..But most of all, try asking the doc for a referral to a dietician..The dietician will ask for the result of the bloodworks of your husband and from there she will know what type of diet to give your husband..You must follow the diet given or else his sugar would shoot up..Next is check his blood sugar 2 hours after each meal and log it so you would know what food is making his sugar high and what is not..You need to log it down coz the dietician and the doctor will check it and advice you on what to do next..

myLot reputation of 93/100. arlene05kang (169)   ranked 198 out of 640 in diabetes  3 months ago

Hi Eihdra...thanks for dropping by. Such a great help (your advice and ideas). Can i also ask you something. Since you mentioned that you also have it. The first time that we found out that he's diabetic, his sugar counts was 400. Now a days, it doesn't go down to 200. I don't know if it's a good sign. What do you think?

myLot reputation of 96/100. laydee (1446)   ranked 473 out of 640 in diabetes  3 months ago

Oh that's too high? Hmm.. what type of monitor did you use? My monitor's normal level is 100 (fasting blood sugar) and 140 (2hours after eating) if it's based there.. 200 is too high.

Is he using insulin now?

Is your husband 'big' built?

myLot reputation of 93/100. arlene05kang (169)   ranked 198 out of 640 in diabetes  2 months ago

He's a big built. He's not yet taking insulin. He visited his doctor last week. His sugar level is 180. I'm happy because at least it drops a little.

myLot reputation of 94/100. eihdra (528)   ranked 456 out of 640 in diabetes  2 months ago

that's a big drop, arlene and that's very good..But I think normal is up to 120..So, a little bit more..If he's not yet injecting insulin, what is he taking as maintenance? Did he lose some weight already?

Dietary fat is not going to hurt your husband. That's a myth. As a diabetic his major enemy is SUGAR. I don't know why so many "experts" blame dietary fat for diabetes but it has NOTHING to do with sugar metabolism, which is what is messed up when you turn into a diabetic.

Your husband can eat all the dietary fat he likes, and he will probably need it as it will be a source of energy for him that will not mess up his blood sugar. Also, dietary fat is used to make hormones, to build nerve cells and in just about every other area of your body, so it's not just a fuel.

You should look into low-carb discussion forums to learn more about the connection between excessive carbohydrate intake and diabetes. Basically, any carbohydrate that you can digest will turn into sugar in your body, so a diabetic needs to cut back on them as much as possible because with diabetes your ability to get rid of the sugar you eat is seriously impaired. This is a matter of getting his blood sugar down to normal so it doesn't destroy his organs.

Here are some interesting blogs you might like. They also recommend good books.

I hate to see yet another diabetic struggle with controlling blood sugar because he's getting bad advice. I know this is a very scary time for you and you want to do the best you can for him, and you're going to hear all kinds of conflicting information from his doctors. Just do the best you can and I'm sure he will appreciate it. Good luck.
