tipping used to be for great service |
|
What happened to the days when a tip was given in appreciation of great service? We went to a all you can eat buffet dinner on our way home from vacation. I ordered and paid with a credit card. The lady asked me if I would like to leave a tip. I said sure and she asked how much? Now I had not even sat down to eat my meal nor seen what kind of service the waitress would give. I asked if I could leave one after my meal and she said sure. I just could not believe that they want you to tip up front. The service was not worth a tip and I just left a couple of bucks on the table. The last time a restaurant made us leave a tip in advance the service was horrible. What is up with people expecting a tip before they ever do anything and then to top it off not put the effort into good service?

1. lilaclady (15200) | 4 months ago | I would be inclined not to gove a tip if it was asked for anyway, when I have paid by bankcard I have always left a tip in cash, I would never pay a tip on my card and I would only leave a tip if the services was good.

travibabiesgirl (929) | 4 months ago | I think I will have to start getting out cash when we go out to dine. I just got used to places either asking if you would like cash back to tip with or letting me add it to my receipt after the meal is over. Thanks for the idea.

2. Irishfrndly65 (2084) | 4 months ago | That's a very good question. I have another one, I had a lady tell me that, "if we all stopped tipping maybe employers would be forced to pay their employees what they are worth instead of relying on the customers to pick up their payroll in the form of tips". I had NEVER thought of it like that before. It was very thought provoking, don't you think?

travibabiesgirl (929) | 4 months ago | It is very thought provoking but I don't really know if that would force them to pay the workers better or not. I figure the workers would be the ones to suffer. But it is definitely something to ponder on.

3. paidreader (2271) | 4 months ago | It's a shame that you didn't get the good service you expected. I would never tip before the service, as you don't know the kind of service you'll get. I think in part that wait staff get paid a very low wage and expect these tips to make up the difference for their hours of service. When they get used to this happening regularly, their efforts go downhill unless they have a special need for some extra money. Then, or at the start of the day, you might get some good service.

travibabiesgirl (929) | 4 months ago | I usually don't tip before the service and was really knocked off my feet when asked if I wanted to provide one up front. The other time that we paid a tip up front was at a restaurant and we had a group of eight. My dad was going to leave a tip and I looked at the bill and it stated that our server had been given a gratuity. I was not happy about that because our server would not bring us the things we requested until we had asked him several times and had to be asked to refill our glasses. The place was not busy and he just had that oh well attitude. Needless to say we won't be back to that place. I do think you are right though they get used to it and the service goes down hill.

travibabiesgirl (929) | 4 months ago | I feel like a cheapskate if I don't at least tip something. Isn't that sad. The service has to be really terrible for me not to tip. I left a tip to someone else in vegas our waitress would not ever come around. There was another worker there that my husband asked for things and he helped us out. Our waitress never came back by so we asked that same guy for our check. She brought that over and I guess thought she would get a tip. As we walked out I handed her tip to that guy. I usually feel guilty for not leaving a tip I know they make a very low hourly wage. I get to thinking that they might be trying to raise a family and I just usually have to leave a little something. I also tip only after service and now I am taking cash to tip with so that I no longer feel pressured to tip in advance.

5. danishcanadian (13839) | 4 months ago | I agree with you. I don't tip at all, anymore, because it is so EXPECTED, that if service is exceptional, people won't know it. There are a few places that I go regularly, and I ind other ways to show my appreciation for the staf....like bringing back souveniers for them from my travels!!

travibabiesgirl (929) | 4 months ago | Because it is so expected, that if service is exceptional, people won't know it. That hit it right on. I want to recognize the ones that give outstanding service. souveniers sounds like a neat way to tip.

6. desertdarlene (5537) | 4 months ago | That wasn't right that they expected you to give them a tip up front. And, I often wonder about tipping at those restaurants where you seat yourself, too, like a buffet. But, I really have a problem with places that you order at a counter and they have those tip jars there. I mean, all they are doing is boxing or bagging up your food and I don't consider that service. So, I hardly ever tip unless the person gives me extra attention or food.

| |
|
|
travibabiesgirl (929) | 4 months ago | Oh I know what you mean about those tip jars and they are everywhere. I have even seen them at convenience stores. I am amazed at how out of control tipping is becoming. I would rather tip the guy who takes out my groceries than the one behind a counter ringing up the sale.

7. nicolec (1646) | 4 months ago | It's because you ate an all you can eat buffet. At one of these places the waitress doesn't do more then clear your plate and fill your drink. She doesn't take your order. She doesn't serve your food. She doesn't really do anything. That's why they probably asked up front. Too many people not tipping at places like that where the server doesn't really do that much.

travibabiesgirl (929) | 4 months ago | Very good point. you described the buffet perfectly except this one didn't even fill all our cups. She saw mine was empty twice when she filled my daughters and my husbands. My sons and I she didn't even bother. She spent the majority of her time using the carpet roller cleaning the floors. I would have tipped better if she would have kept all our glasses full. The only reason I tipped at all is she looked worn out and like she had the weight of the world on her shoulders. I think though you have the reason they ask up front right on.

8. highflyingxangel (5719) | 4 months ago | I would have told the waitress if she had to ask for a tip then I'm sure she's not deserving of one. Then I would have left after eating dinner and not given her a tip. If they are rude and I consider that rude then there's no reason for me to leave a tip.
| |
| |
|
|
travibabiesgirl (929) | 4 months ago | Well it wasn't really the waitress that asked for the tip it was the cashier at the front. I do agree though that it is rude to ask for a tip before you have even been served. I wasn't going to hold the rudeness of the cashier against the waitress but after the service I got I wonder if the cashier told the waitress we didn't leave a tip on our card?

| 9. fotojunkie (39) | 4 months ago | I am generally a very good tipper. When I receive exceptional service, I tip very, very well. I resent, however, the restaurants that add the gratuity onto the bill. All too often I have found that the service is substandard when the gratuity is included in the bill. They already know that they are getting a tip whether they provide great or even good service or not. I live in an area where we go to rather expensive restaurants and a dinner for two can lend a $15 tip or better to a great server. If the gratuity is included in the bill, I am not likely to visit that restaurant again... As for tipping prior to the service. No way.
| |
| |
|
|
travibabiesgirl (929) | 4 months ago | I also try to tip well with great service and I agree with you about the gratuity being added to the bill. I do not think it is right to be charged a gratuity just because the wait staff has more people at one table. If those same 8 or 10 sat at different tables it looks to me like it would be more work and less chance of a tip. I am in agreement with not going back to one that forces a gratuity and won't tip any more in advance.

10. nengs10 (2463) | 4 months ago | This is truly weird. It's so funny to know that tipping nowadays has become compulsory rather than optional. Well, in my case, I will still stick with the old rule. I will just give tip to those deserving servicemen who really give quality service.

|
|
travibabiesgirl (929) | 4 months ago | I agree with you just tip those who give great service. I am no longer handing out my hard earned dollars to those who act like they are entitled or give me lousy service.
