Are YOU a potential rioter? | | Ever since I watched the first riot I had ever seen, I was shocked and in total disbelief at how quickly that human beings...hmmm, how can I put this?.....well, they 'change'. Fortunately not all of them, but a very select few, just......flip. Like a switch! Are these 'bombs' really that ready, willing and able to just go off like that, as soon as some opportunistic situation arises, be it a mass black-out or huge sports game gone awry; just what goes on in these (and I'm using the term loosely perhaps) 'peoples' heads that causes them to just friggin' flip-out? And become, dare I say; animals. H*ll, even animals don't do what these people do when they 'switch-on'. And, ok, so we have a few nutbars out in public, something happens, and they lose it. Ok, so.....then a body has to ask the*next* obvious question. Just what in blazes goes on in the minds of the ones who start to*join in* on the riot? And before you know it, there is mass destruction and confusion everywhere, people clambering on top of each other, lighting fires, falling from balconies and hydro poles, breaking windows, looting, and all the while, feeding this mass chaos. It just darn well blows my mind, ya know??!! I have been in a situation like this. It was a concert and I started to realize that something just seemed wrong, when a band was a bit late in arriving, so I grabbed my GF and we got h outta there. Then, maybe 10 minutes later it started to happen. Where we had been standing down in General Admission, we might have been crushed cuz apparently a big speaker tower assembly landed there after some of these idiots started to climb it and it became unbalanced and top heavy. Now consider this the next day you're out for a quiet walk downtown, or at a sports stadium....*they're* walking all around us, they're among us, interacting with us each and every day, and how can you tell??....WHO is that potential mental case, ready at the spur of the moment, to just come unglued. Millions and million of dollars in damages incur. People get hurt. People even get killed when this happens. And for what? Just HOW does this happen? So I would be interested what your thoughts are on this. Doesn't it just shock you more than almost any other thing you can think of?

| | | | | | 1. foxyfire33 (5752) | 7 months ago | I would like to think I'd be the one hunkered down in my house waiting for it all to blow over but I can also see how easy it might be to get swept away by it all...I mean what if the looters tried to get in my home and hurt me or my children? I certainly would be grabbing the nearest baseball bat or metal pipe to start clubbing people...it's human nature to protect yourself, right? And maybe, depending on the situation, I could very easily wind up becoming a looter, what else do you do when you and your children are hungry and it feels the the world around you is crumbling. I don't think I'd be among those stealing tv's and stereos though...but necessities? Yes, I could do that.

plunketear (544) | 7 months ago | Thanks for your reply foxyfire. But I am somewhat surprised by your comment that you might, as a bystander and not necessarily participating in the riot per se, use the riot as an opportunity to loot, even if for basic necessities. I am sorry to hear that you are having this much trouble making ends meet to support yourself and your kids. Is there a social assistance program in your area that you might have access to? Having said that, I am all for defending our homes and our families, but the riot situation I was envisioning when i posted, was one mostly of a public display of destruction and vandalism, including the hurting of each other, sometimes due to even a crushing situation at times. And if looting is involved, when you see them, they aren't really going for the 'necessities' that you mention.

foxyfire33 (5752) | 7 months ago | Wow...I think we just had a mojor misunderstanding! I was picturing a riot involving the business and residential areas of a city and supposing that I was living in that city with my family...what would I do then? These things have been known to last for days and the streets can be unsafe for weeks afterward. In that environment it would feel like the world was crumbling around us and that is when I may feel the need to go loot a grocery store if I was that concerned about my family's needs. As it is I live out in the country and don't really need to worry about riots.

plunketear (544) | 7 months ago | I understand now FF. And yes I know what you mean about a long lasting riot, but that isn't even wha tI was thinking, That is an even worse situation, and I agree, if I could not get supplies the nI would have to fend for my family. But I would come back and make it right when all is settled. You sound like you would do that too. We're on the same page i think. I live in the country too now, but used to work in the city. I'd rather take on bears and big cats, than people:)

| | 2. novataylor (1793) | 7 months ago | I've seen this on television, I've heard about it on the news, but thankfully, I've never been in the midst of anything near like it. It's a phenomenon. It's mob mentality. It's weird! And yes, I find the whole idea of it terrifying. I can't imagine myself ever getting caught up in that sort of thing, honestly, it just goes against the very grain, the core of me. Completely against my nature. But who knows? What if I were in a crowd, something like that happened, and someone I cared for or loved was hurt - what would I do? I would fight, I'm sure, I would protect my loved one, but I couldn't possibly get caught up in the frenzy of it and just go violently wild. If I know anything, I know that. I would grab my loved one and run. I'd do anything to get us out of there, to safety. Then, after I'd gotten help for him/her, I would break down into a million little pieces. But as to it shocking me more than almost any other thing I could think of? Yes, absolutely, I find it appalling and most entirely shocking. Such violence. So quickly, and escalating like that, just growing insane, I can't wrap my head around that. I just can't grasp it. Mystifying.

plunketear (544) | 7 months ago | Thank you for your comments on this novataylor. I believe that you*would* fight tooth and nail to protect your loved ones, as would I. But you and I are of the same mind that we wouldn't allow ourselves to find us 'that deep' into a scene like that, instead, hopefully realising in time to make an exit before the bad stuff comes down. Having been in this situation and being receptive/lucky? enough to feel something was wrong before it actually happened. But when it does, it seems to escalate at surprising speed. I think (but am not certain in all cases) that alcohol use, especially if 'abuse', seems to contribute and compound this ugly phenomenon. If I were to guess, I think the ones who initiate this violent and irrational behaviour, likely suffer higher than normal feelings of insecurity and in a wildly misdirected 'mission of recognition', (if you like) prance around putting their insecurities on public display. Naturally, others who share that predisposition, join in, in an effort to fulfill this warped void in their life. That's my hunch anyway..
