Piercings

When I was managing a wholesale, I was total against guys with earring. It is so unethical to me. But it is the norm now. Even on the television you see the personalities with their earrings. Body tatoos is also disgusting. Why should one want to put all kinds of designs on his/her body.

Piercings and tatoos are so much a part of society now I think they should just be accepted by the members of today's society the way two piece bathing suits or women wearing pants are.

I guess it depends on the job. But if you are talking about getting hired into a public type of job then again it would depend on the piercing. I don't see a problem with a stud in the nose, as that has become a fairly common site. But some piercings do look very unprofessional and I can see why some employers might not hire someone with an eyebrow peircing or one of those lip studs.
I think it is perfectly fine to adorn yourself in any way you choose to but when you are working in a professional setting or a very public setting then you represent the place that you work for and these types of adornments do not represent a professional appearance.

If i was in charge of a business I would let the persons qualifications speak for them, not their choice of body art. And i am very OK with tattoos and piercings. Just another way to express yourself. It seems wrong to judge someone based solely on looks.

In general, piercings are frowned upon in the working environment due to health and safety regulations rather than because they are unprofessional. Being a pierced employee, I believe that there should be less stigma attached to the "type of people" who are pierced as the general consensus appears to be that people with piercings are anti-social or rebellious and this is largely not the case.

While at work, I have no problem removing my lip stud, but I will replace it with a retainer. As with high school, I understand that there are dress policies to abide by. However, I will not remove my tragus piercing, my tongue piercing or my navel piercing. These are relatively well hidden and are almost a hundred percent safe. After all, how many people do you know who catch tongue studs on door handles? How many people do you know who have ripped a barbell from their navel, whilst serving customers on the tills? I think it has been taken a little too far.

There was some controversy caused over religious jewellery items, such as necklaces bearing the crucifix of Jesus, but also bracelets related to the Hindu religion. If people are allowed to wear these, then I don't think companies are in a position to say allow one employee to breach the contract and not another.
