its a dogs natural instinct to dig.. there really isnt much you can do about it other than maybe keeping him secluded to one area of yer yard either in a kennel or with a lead attached from point A to point B.. and let him dig to his content in his own space. beating on him for doing something that is just naturally what he is..? yeah, ok, no..

You do not have to hit the dog to show dominance. try a simple game of fetch or someting to distract him. If he does it when you aren't looking keep an eye out and cause a ruccuss by making loud noises. try filling an empty coffee can with coins and everytime he does it shake it hard to make alot of noise. get his attention and let him no "NO, Bad dog"!

If you hit the dog he may build aggression towards others he deems weaker than him (children or other small animals).
Simple scolding using gestures and voice will get the point across. Try the coins in the can, it helps with housebreaking, can't help to try with digging.

Any behavior can be untaught, It takes patience and perserverance. First and foremost, if the dog knows you care and are a good pack leader it will listen to your scolding. Your pack is your family and that includes your canine friend.

Good Luck!

It's an instinct to get out of the heat, the earth is cooler the further you dig down. You can't beat him or punish them for it, it wouldn't do any good.
My dog was a champion digger, I decided to put a brick in the hole, thinking maybe it would wear down his nails at the same time, BUT he stopped digging in that hole. He moved to a new one, but with each hole, I put a brick in it and he finally stopped, for the most part. Now he just digs a little, and leaves it alone.
Also, you can't fill in all the holes, you have to leave one or two. They'll just keep digging. They seem content to know the hole is there if they need it. I have two I leave in the yard, and they are the same two from last year and no new holes.
Good luck.

Did you ever consider that you may have moles in your yard and your dog is digging for the moles? Moles have been a problem in the past for me and several friends as well and the dogs dig for the moles which makes the hole problem even worse. If that's the case then you'll need to get rid of the moles first which is another discussion in itself. Not sure if this is the "whole" problem but it might be something to check out as moles can really tear up a yard quick.

No moles, or any other diggers in my yard except occasionally Juneau.
My dog is from Alaska with a super thick coat even in the summer, he digs to get out of the heat.
But moles are a worthy consideration for those that have them. My mom had them in California and they tore up her yard. Her husband was at war with them, the moles won.

My dog is always digging the hole, I just observe maybe because of the climate we have here in the Philippines. It's so hot. After digging the hole in the garden he slept on the hole.

Just let you dog this thing, some dog really doing this things for purpose.

does your dog like water?

If he doesn't then you could try spraying him every time he goes and digs. I used that on my dog for other training things and it worked great.

My dog never really had a problem with digging holes though.. he tried it a once or twice and I yelled at him. He never did it again. lol

Maybe try yelling at him, let him know you are MAD but without hitting him and hopefully by yelling he'll get the picture and you won't have to beat him.

I've tried tossing tennis balls at the big dog, spraying him with the water hose (that works the best, he takes off running. God forbid he get clean) but in the end I look at it this way. It's just what dogs do. But I do worry that he's gonna pull back with a rattlesnake attached to his nose.

Make a sandbox for him, hide lots of tasty treats in the sand so he can find and encourage him to dig there. This does mean that you need to always watch him when being outside so that you can redirect him to the sandbox whenever he starts to dig elsewhere and praise him for digging in the sandbox, but this is pretty much the only humane way I know, quite unlike throwing things at him or spraying him with water which is not going to teach him anything except fear you. Digging is a natural instinct for dogs, so it's up to you to teach him where you want him to dig.
