Should being INDEPENDENT start at an early age?  | |  I received a beautiful text message just now, it was actually a forwarded quote. It read: "Nothing must be done for a child if he can do it by himself" - Jean Jacques Rousseau. It speaks about independence for children. There are children who grow up to be such spoiled brats, they won't even make their beds in the morning! I don't have a kid yet but I've taken care of 2 nieces already and as soon as they were able to do things for and by themselves, I let them. Just simple things like preparing their breakfasts, letting them dress up by themselves. Now, they're both grown and my mom tells me they do household chores without their mom telling them to do so and I'm so proud of them. Do you think children should be taught how to be independent (to a certain degree) at an early age?

But somethings when it is your child it is hard to see they are growing up and to let them keep doing more and more things.
I am bad about not giving my child more and more responsibilities. I have her put clothes away and clean her room but she is old enough to do things like the dishes and take care of her cat but I never have her do either. I am so used to doing it myself, but she does need to start doing more.

 tigertang (1485) | 4 months ago |  I think being independent is a wonderful thing and wish I had become independent at an even younger age than when I actually became independent. I mean, I imagine that as a parent, you have to prepare yourself when you can no longer be there for a child and as a child you need to be able to look at your parents without the awe that you once had but still be able to love them.
However, I must admit that I once dated a girl who had a seven year old daughter and one of my favorite activities was being there to do things for the little girl. I think one of the best things about being a parent must be having time to do things with your little ones, and I think letting go of them to let them do their own thing must be one of the hardest things to do and accept. But then again, I've never been anyones parent in the proper sense of the word so what do I know?

I love doing things with my kids...but doing it for them is not something I want to do. My younger one comes to school with me...and he's the most independant one in his class even though he's the youngest child in the whole school.
