Five Days |
|
Is how long I have had this migraine. FIVE DAYS! It's not always debilitating. Like, right now it's just a dull ache in the left side of my head. But, that's what it felt like yesterday morning until about 3 or 4. By the time I left work, I was in so much pain I could hardly drive. Yesterday it sort of went in four to six hour intervals between agonizing and tolerable. I have never had a headache that has lasted this long, and it's causing trouble; keeping me doing things I need to do. So, my first question is, do you all think it would help if I ram my head in to the wall about five times hard? At this point, I can't imagine it will feel worse than the headache at its worst. If you think that's a bad idea (and I'll trust you all if you do), tell me what you might do in my situation. Are you a migraine sufferer? What is the worst you have ever had and what made it go away? I have a dear friend has something for me to try, but by the time I am able to get that, I might not be alive.

1. rantingqueen (389) | 7 months ago | I suffer from extreme migraines as well. Many times there is nothing that you can do except go to bed and wait for it to pass. However, 5 days is way to long for a headache or migraine, and may mean that something else is wrong, so you should try calling your Doctor. In the meantime, if you have a spouse or partner, have them rub the arches of your feet. Or have them gently, almost like a butterfly, rub their hands across your head and cheek. Both have worked for me in the past.

3. ElicBxn (9692) | 7 months ago | 5 days! Rough! No, hitting your head isn't going to help, tho it does sometimes feel like it couldn't hurt worse - it can. I had a headache that lasted 6 months after a car accident - gee, I wonder why I failed one class and made 2 "d" in others. Even after my first break in the pain, it continued to hurt off and on, mostly on, for over a year. then, in 1998, after my 3rd surgery I awoke with a splitting migraine that the doctor ended up sending me to a neurologist for. The surgery was in Sept and I wasn't pain free for months, tho it did start breaking after about 2 months, because of the meds. I strongly suggest you talk to your doctor about one of the migraine meds, Imitrix or one of the others. It is rediculous that you should have to tollerate that kind of pain.

dfn12968 (5563) | 7 months ago | I tried a few different migraine meds years ago, but none of them helped and all made me tired. High test ibuprofen is usually what works best but it's not working now. I can't imagine a 6 month headache! I am about to go nuts now and it's not even 6 days!

5. novataylor (1819) | 7 months ago | Try drinking some coffee, sweetheart, or tea - anything that has caffeine in it. I've heard that's supposed to help dilate or un-dilate the blood vessels, whichever is right. And I'd try to go and lie down in a dark room, or put a cold cloth on my forehead, but ramming your head into the wall? Nah, please don't do that. I understand your thinking it wouldn't be near as bad as the pain you've already got, but it would probably just give you more, so try to refrain from that particular 'remedy'. This is probably a stupid question, because I'm sure you've done everything you can to get rid of your migraines or get help for them, but have you seen a doctor and has he given you ergotamine or anything like that? Or that newer migraine medicine that I can't think of the name? Hey, have you tried looking them up on the Net for some advice? That might be worth a try. I once had a headache (maybe a migraine, I don't know) that lasted 10 days! I thought I was going to lose what was left of my mind. I called my sister's doctor and begged to be seen, said I was throwing myself upon their mercy, please, please, please, and they agreed to see me. She gave me a shot of vistoril or something, a very serious relaxant, and something for pain. She said one of my eyes was crossed and a vein in my temple was throbbing to beat the band. Yikes!! Whatever she did, it took the headache away. Maybe you could go to your doc and ask for a shot? God, I don't know, D, but I do know that I feel desperate for you to get rid of that thing. I'm so deeply sorry that you're in such pain. I'd give anything to be able to help. In lieu of that, please know that you're in my heart and that I'm sending you gentle strokes on your forehead, and the warmest hugs and as many healing vibes as I can muster. XXX

dfn12968 (5563) | 7 months ago | Thank you, Nova. You are very sweet. I appreciate your thoughts and advice. The longest I've had a migraine for before this has been three days, and that was less than a year ago. I have had them for two + days before, but nothing like this. The last time, it actually did go away with caffeine, but I have not been lacking in that this week. I have been drinking a ton. I have not actually seen the doctor in a long time for my headaches. I took prescriptions at one time, but they never helped and made me so tired, that I stopped taking them. I now take 4 Advil at a time, and although there are days when I have taken more than the max allowed (20+ in a day), they usually do eventually get rid of it. Not this time, though. If it's not gone by Monday, I will go to the doctor. There must be something new since the last time I took prescriptions that is better than what I used to take.

|
|
novataylor (1819) | 7 months ago | D, do you know how much it's going to tear up your stomach, taking that much Advil? Sweetie, it could eat a freakin hole right into it! That's very dangerous. I know that you need the pain relief, but yes, yes, yes, get yourself to a doctor, darlin. They have better medicines now than they used to. You've gotta get some real help. Suffering like this is horrible. And if it's not gone by Monday, you're gonna be half crazy anyway, and they might just ship you off! So, gone or not, see your/a doctor!!! The next time one starts coming on, you can take your new medicine and prevent it from becoming such a tornadic nightmare. Please go to the doc, D. Please get the help you need. We want you back to your old migraine-free self!

novataylor (1819) | 7 months ago | No fair, D, you have every right to complain. What Terry's going through is horrible, and I wouldn't wish it on anyone, but you have your own pain. I don't believe in comparative pain. Yours is as bad to you as anyone else's is to them. Whether it's physical pain, or the pain of what Terry's enduring with both physical and otherwise, it's just not fair to try to compare, ok?
| |
|
|
dfn12968 (5563) | 7 months ago | I know you're right, Nova. But, seeing people go through things that I feel are worse than I what I am experiencing, in any situation, just humbles me and puts things in to perspective and helps me to stop complaining and make changes, ya know? Some people can change their situations, and I feel badly making my plight seem so diar when I probably can change it.

7. AmbiePam (11804) | 7 months ago | The longest I've ever had one was a week, and I finally got rid of it by going to the ER. There have been times I thought about finding a gun so I could shoot myself, the pain was so bad. I hope something can be done soon to help you. Do you have an ER close by? It makes me feel sick to my stomach to imagine the pain you are in. It's just awful, I know.

dfn12968 (5563) | 7 months ago | Thanks! Right now I'm okay, but I feel it getting worse. I have a lot of homework to do that I have not done all week, so I'm stuck here in front of the computer. I think Wednesday was the worst. I had to go in to the conference room at work and sit in there with my head down and the lights off. Duke Medical Center is close, so if I have to, I can go there. Right now it's just a dull ache, so if I can be lucky enough to have it stay this way for the rest of the day, I might be in the clear.

8. PearlGrace (1767) | 7 months ago | Hi, dfn12968. Gosh, it's just terrible that anyone should have to suffer for 5 days with a migraine headache. I cannot imagine such pain as I have never experienced a migraine headache in my life. I am going to have to nix the idea about ramming your head in to the wall five times hard as that may not decrease the pain, plus you'd probably have some painting to do when that was all over:>. I am not a nursing or medical professional but I have had friends and acquaintances who have migraine headaches. Two of them swear by going to bed in a dark room where it is cool and quiet and lying down for a couple of hours. They both say "that's the only thing that will make it go away." I have heard there are shots for migraines but don't remember what they are called (is that Valtrex or something else?) I am sending good vibes your way in hopes your migraine has now dissipated. Take care, dfn12968. PearlGrace P.S. Isn't there an Asian medicine technique of squeezing the tissue between your thumb and index finger with the thumb and index finger of your other hand to relieve the pain of a headache? Hm, not sure about that one either...

9. alamode (1869) | 7 months ago | I'm glad I checked in today... Magnesium, B-2 and super B-complex!! It stops migraine. Period. They just put my niece, who has MS, on it... I swear on everything that it works. It takes a few weeks to build to the proper level, and you have to take them every day, but wouldn't it be worth it?? The only headaches I get now are from sinus, and they're easy to take care of. I don't understand why people won't do this... is it TOO simple? Don't do anything drastic, my friend... except to try this!!

10. mummymo (10636) | 7 months ago | Awww my darling d I do understand how awful it is!% days is a long time, I had one last week that every time I thought it was gone it would come back with a vengeance making me throw up and not able to keep my eyes open - I was offline for 2 days cos of it! I can guarantee you that although ramming your head repeatedly against a brick wall sounds like the best thing you could do right now it really will only break the wall! Sleep. darkness and rest running cold water on your wrists are the only things I can advise. I hate to say this too but the computer only makes it worse! I do hope you feel better really very soon! xxx
