More Tim Russert. |
|
Tim Russert has passed away. I admit that I have no knowledge of him, and I feel for his loss to his family. But I have been watching CNN periodically this weekend, and I have been noticing how they have been treating his unfortunate passing. The tributes are pouring in from many places. And I don't want to take that away from the man, but he is a news personality. He is getting more coverage than a government dignitary does. Has anyone else been noticing that the media plays higher to themselves than to common folk?

1. Fishmomma (3418) | 7 months ago | I listened to his program many times and felt he understood what many of the real problems are in this country. He made sense and I liked to hear what he had to say. Many Americans respected him for giving us information and getting the unknown facts that some people would just ignore. He was a hard working gentleman that cared about people. I will remember him for predicting the 2000 Presidential Election saying Florida was the important state. This time the media coverage is correct in their coverage. We see many celebrities get a lot of coverage and now we are seeing a family man, who cared about his community be noticed in other countries. I will miss getting the important small facts that really are important. RIP Tim Russert

BCMike (2331) | 7 months ago | There is no doubt that he was highly regarded at his profession. And that he was a role model for family men. I was only thinking that the media was exalting him above what might have been done for others outside of media. That's why I was trying so hard to not take anything away from the man's accomplishments. I was thinking it was a media focus on itself rather than what might be dispensed on someone outside media was all.

2. katiedoubleu (2954) | 7 months ago | Hmmm.... good question. I don't really think it's more attention because he was a media name and face. I think it's because he came into our living rooms with his programs and commentaries often and so many people recognized him. I don't remember it being much different for someone like Johnny Carson who also "shared our lives" through television for many years. I assume that had there been any big news going on, the Russert coverage would have been lighter. Well such as the flooding in Iowa and other states in the middle of the US. I don't watch CNN but the cable news I do watch went back and forth between the weather/flooding, Russert, and politics.

BCMike (2331) | 7 months ago | Good enough. I was not familiar with his work and honestly had no knowledge of him prior to this. So I am perhaps being selfish or something. He obviously impacted many people. I am sorry this happened to his family. Nobody wants a good man's life cut short. And it happens too often now.

tdemex (403) | 7 months ago | I have to agree with Darlene, the reason their giving him so much coverage is because of all the people in the meadia are his friends even on differnt networks they are like family. Mike he was very good at his job and brought a special way of interviewing every Sunday! He will be sorely missed by millions! Thanks tdemex

4. kenzie45230 (2469) | 7 months ago | I don't think that they would be having as much coverage about other news people. They haven't in the past. But this man was special, indeed. I'm glad that they are recognizing that. When this man interviewed people on Meet the Press, he asked the questions no one else was asking. He wrote some great books, too, about his dad. Some think it was timely that he passed away going into Father's Day weekend, since his books were about how great his father was. Personally, I'm glad they're showing what an awesome man this was. It's sad that you never watched him. You might have discovered something about the news you didn't know, had you watched him on Meet the Press. I do think it's bazarre that all the politicians are lining up to claim his as their friend, though.

5. jalucia (358) | 7 months ago | Definitely! The media decides what's important enough to focus on and what can go without attention. But, this imbalance stretches throughout the media. Such as the fact that the media chooses to focus on missing persons who are white and good looking, when there are people are non white and don't fit the stereotypical "good looking" media standards who go missing also. And, they're families hurt just as much, and they could use just as many resources, and the media on their side, to help find their loved ones.

6. anniepa (6858) | 7 months ago | I'm surprised you weren't more familiar with Tim Russert since I know from myLot you're quite interested in politics and to me if you like politics he was the one whose shows and commentary you never wanted to miss. He was really very unique in that he had the respect and admiration from pretty much everyone from both parties and every political stripe, that's how fair he was. I don't think the media has overdone it at all because his death was such a total and complete shock and right in the middle of a Presidential campaign it's really a tough thing to handle. MSNBC and NBC had the most coverage, for obvious reasons, because that's where he worked and he was actually the one to hire many of the correspondents and reporters there. I guess it's difficult and even cruel to make comparisons about people's deaths but when you think about it look how much attention was paid to Anna Nicole Smith and that went on for months. Annie

Fishmomma (3418) | 7 months ago | Annie I agree with you, as am surprised Mike isn't familiar with Tim Russert. Its really unusual to see all political parties listen to somebody and respect what they are saying about politics. I follow politics like you do, even though I don't post on the topic as often. I watch many programs and follow the election results all night. I was wondering if you read either of his books? They are excellent.

BCMike (2331) | 7 months ago | I am not a book reader. And I have little to no regard for political integrity. So I give politicians no creedence for these shows. I am interested in politics to the extent of stripping politicians of the ability to easily screw over the voters. I have little interest in things I cannot change. I don't waste my time with conspiracy theories. I cannot change anything I see or hear about until the voters extend that right to me in an election. There are many 'issues'. But the issues cannot be changed until the voters are empowered. Refer back to bull fight analogy. Issues=cape Bull=voter that chases the cape gets stuck by matador=politician. Same crap over and over. And as nice as Russert may have been, he was an extension of the original problem, the politician.
