Why is Becky Hammon playing on the Russian team?  | |  Becky Hammon, a Women's National Basketball star, is now the point man for the Russian Olympic team. How in the world did that happen? I've never heard of that before. I wonder why she wasn't asked to try out for our team before she had been accepted to the Russian team. Some think she is a traitor to the US. Most athletes realize that not everyone can go to the Olympics, but they usually don't try out for another countries team. This is just strange.

Because she is there for half the year, and because they want her on the team, they offered her citizenship. She accepted and part of the reason why was so she could be on the Olympic team. She really wanted to be in the Olympics and could have either tried out for the US team or been given a for sure starting job on the Russian team. Whether it was right or not, don't know, but that is how it happened.

Maybe her love for the game trumps everything else. But, I think that's just lousy! I'm not going to try to defend my reaction. On some level, I have to believe that any American would believe the same. The Olympics are an international competition, where the athletes represent THEIR country.
Becky Hammon -- I'll remember that name. I can only hope that Wheaties, Coke, or Nike will remember the 2008 Olympics -- if they ever consider giving her a contract option!
