No smoking law in the Philippines

I'm a smoke and I agree with the Law. It's my choice to smoke, not the choice of others around me. Smoking should be banned from public places.
However, here in the US, they want to take it further, in Fla. (Sarasota county) they will not hire anyone who smokes on thier own time, that means even if they don't smoke in or near work, they still will not be hired if they smoke at home. That is taking it too far.
Some states, mine included, are trying to pass a law that you cannot smoke in your own vehicle, considering it a public place. I tell you what, when they pay for my gas, insurance, repairs and the acutal car, then they can tell me I can't smoke in my car. Another one is you cannot smoke on the street, out in the open air. That's taking it too far.

I will keep this law in my mind and whenever I see somebody smoking inside a passenger jeep or in public places not designated as smoking areas, I will ask him/her if she or he is aware of RA 9211.

Yes, I just hope they post a sticker about this law on jeepneys sot hat drivers and passengers are reminded all the time as they board the jeepney. I hate those who smoke on jeepneys, I try to stare at them but sometimes they just ignore me.

Yeah I think its just a law that floats around and no one is really very keen in implementing that. If you would noticed there are lots of police who could try to at least warn those that are making this violations but alas they are just standing and worse sometimes they also do it also that's why. It is sad that there are just laws that get passed yet they are never implemented at all.

That is the problem with our country... we have very good laws... that will surely benefit all... but when it comes to implementation... we suck... i was happy when the no smoking in public utility vehicles law was passed... but up until now... i still see drivers and passengers smoking... and even if there is a policeman... nothing is done about it...

What is the use of such laws... when implementation sucks...

I am aware of this law, but though Philippines enforces this law, there's no use. As we observed, all people around the public places is not aware of this and they don't care at all. Why? because even police officer do smoke anywhere.
Some of uncivilized people are not aware of this smoking habits, the effects on their health and to their family which second hand smoker.
I think these people should be oriented about this law and about smoking cessation to be able to save their lives and save our planet earth, what do you think?

I guess it depends on which part of the Philippines you live. Here in Baguio City, the no-smoking-rule in public utility transportation is religiously followed. In fact, a lot of jeepneys don't have a "no smoking" sign, but still you don't see anyone smoking inside a jeepney. Occasionally, if you ride a taxi, the taxi driver would ask your permission if he can smoke if he notices that you're a smoker yourself. I guess because we live high up in the mountains - where oxygen is thinner, we value our fresh air more.^^

The City of Makati banned public smoking in every establishment in the early 90's and in public transportation when the law was passed in 2003. Jeepney drivers warned passengers about this because they too are being fined if they allow passengers to smoke. Discipline is all we need and a political will from those in the government. I salute the Makati Mayor for doing this, but i think the penalties of RA9211 are not that heavy, a fine of not less than Five Hundred Pesos (Php500.00) but not more than One Thousand (Php1,000.00) shall be imposed on the first offense.

Well, with a very light penalty, many are still not obeying the law. I can't remember how many times I argue with a passenger about this.

I don't smoke and I hate to be near any smokers. I cannot stand of the smoke smell and makes me want to vomit if I smell it too long. If I were near the smoker maybe I would ask him/her to put off the smoke immediately. I know they would say it is none of my business and will tell me to go away. I think there is nothing more I can do, I can only think that they would not last long if this is not done. Here in Australia we have very strong law for smokers and smoking in most public places were prohibited, recently they have also introduced the law to ban smokers smoking in their car with any children under 16 years of age. I suppose to think that it would be much better if they ban smoking completely and I would be happy...but I don't think it would come any soon.

well, i also don't like if people smoke in appropriate places where they are not supposed to smoke... like in the air-conditioner room, indoors, inside the public transport like train or tram here in australia... it is annoying as i can't stand the smell of the smoke... i hope people can be more considerate and choose more appropriate places to smoke... take care and have a nice day...
