New lens for Nikon D40 | | I am thinking about getting a macro lens for my Nikon D40 digiral camera. I was wondering if anyone else out there has a Nikon D40 and what lens you have purchased and which ones you like the best. Quality and Cost are a major factor to me so give me details on both and where you purchased you equipment. I bought my camera at Best Buy after researching it in Consumer Reports. I have had it now over a year and I am very happy with it. I also bought my 55/200mm telephoto lens at Best Buy and I am happy with the quality of picture it produces. I did get VR with it so I don't have to use a tri-pod as often, which is good becuase I do alot of nature shots so I am ususally hiking parks and conservation areas and hauling a tripod around can be a pain. I also would like any advise on usage and getting off the automatic use, and do more manuel use of my camera. I did purchase a great book on the Nikon D40 which has helped alot, but simple tips from people who have gone thru the trail and error process is always good tips. My photos can be found on flickr.com user name ssweet2323 or my web site at www.altruisticphotos.9f.com Sue

Sigma lenses are significantly more affordable than Nikkor brand lenses... but they are extremely high quality! I would definitely recommend them! Unfortunately, you have a Nikon D40 which severely limits the types of lenses that will work with your camera. Sigma lenses are 3rd party lenses and won't work with the Nikon D40, D40X or D60. The only lenses that will work with your camera are Nikkor brand lenses. These lenses tend to be a lot more expensive than third party lenses. If you're interested in macro photography, you may want to look into some cheaper macro alternatives! You can get macro filters that screw onto the end of your current lens for about $20. For a bit more money (but still a lot less than buying a macro lens) you can get macro extension tubes for your current lens. If you'd like to see example macro images taken with both filters and extension tubes, just go to Flickr.com and search for phrases like "macro extension tubes" and "macro filters"!

I to am using an 18-55 amd 55-200 VR lens, I am working both on and off auto zooms, I am not fond fo the 2x telephoto lens as I loose a lot of detail with it, but anyway, the best thing I can tell you to do is to save for the lens, and work for it, good lens, and I've read really good things about sigma 400 will cost 400-600 dollars give or take. best advice I can give you is to save, save, save, save...Don't settle for something that you don't want. Mooch
