Have you ever run over or hit a pet or animal? |
|
A friend of mine recently had a small dog CHASE her tires and in doing so, she ran into it. It was injured, not killed, but it was still scary. I have never hit or run over a pet myself, but I have seen other people do it, and I don't understand why some people just keep on driving! Would you keep driving or would you stop? Would it depend whether it was a wild animal, like a squirrel, or somebody's kitty?

1. nicholejade (1461) | 7 months ago | I have hit a few deer in my life. With driving on the highway at night is usually the worst time for hitting them. It is a common occurance here as well. When it is dark and you are on an open road it is quite hard to avoid hitting them. It happens so fast. I do however stop and pull them off the road. And of course survey the damages on the vehicle. I have hit 2 dogs as well. Driving down a gravel road at night these 2 dogs are well known for running out to bite the tires. However I know that I killed these dogs as well this time I got out and pulled them off the road and surveyed if there was any damage. I was not about to go and tell the owners I killed their dogs as I am sure they know that their dogs do it as well. I am not going to feel sorry about killing them either. It was just a time bomb waiting to go off. To be totally honest with you you stated that you don't understand why some people just keep on driving. What exactly are you suppose to do? Go to them and say sorry for backing over you kitty. But he was under my tires. How is that your fault. If pet owners can't keep an eye and make sure the animal doesn't dart in front of the car or is hiding under the cars what are you suppose to do?

mommyboo (2090) | 7 months ago | I have a friend who hit a deer. The deer did a number on his car... so bad it was in the shop a LONG time. He was thankfully unhurt but man, deer create a mess. As far as the keep on driving thing, the incident*I* saw was so icky. A cat was crossing the road and I slowed down to avoid it. The guy coming the other direction who ran over it gunned his engine in order to run it over. I was so upset I was crying and shaking.

nicholejade (1461) | 7 months ago | Can you be sure that the person on the other side gunned his engine. Maybe he didn't see the cat. If you didn't see it happen from his side we are not the ones to judge that he did it intentionally.

2. gitfiddleplayer (2928) | 7 months ago | I hit a dog once, let me tell you my story. I was a youth pastor and we were coming back around 2:00am from a youth rally. I watched this dog run across the road in front of car and then he ran right back into the ditch and then up onto the road where I was driving the church van. I could have swerved and missed him but I would have killed a whole van full of sleeping teens in the process. I hit him hard and I know he died on impact. I felt bad so bad the whole two hour drive home. I'm sure he was a farm dog and still think about the people who had to find him the next day. I never told anybody for fear they would think I was a horrible person.

mommyboo (2090) | 7 months ago | Oh, I understand! I have a friend whose husband ran into a light pole in order to avoid running into two kids who were running across a busy street. She was so mad at her husband for the damage to the car - until he told her it was a choice of a chunk out of light pole or manslaughter. Granted they should not have been in the road like that but what can you do?

mommyboo (2090) | 7 months ago | I see a theme going here, better to keep us and our passengers safe. I know that animal activists would get all over me but I agree! My child is worth a heck of a lot more than an animal.=)

6. overwings (2394) | 7 months ago | It happened to me twice. In one occasion we jumped over a wild boar on the motorway. It is quite a big animal and our car was for a half a second in the air as the animal slid under the car. It was lying on the road as it had been hit before by another car that got all the radiator broken. I had other encounters with wild boars but I always had time to break or avoid them. And another time I hit an animal it was a bat that got trapped with one of the widscreen wipers. I could't stop immediately so the bat kept on hitting the widscreen till I could pull over. Unfortunately it was already dead when I could free the leg from the wiper.
