The Plant Doctor is In |
|
This lily has grown to almost four feet tall and I was wondering if it was ever going to flower. I finally saw some buds a few days ago and was excited that maybe it was finally going to happen. Mother Nature stepped in and sent us some severe winds and the top of this lily snapped and keeled over - I was so disappointed! Not one to give up so easily, I grabbed whatever tape I could find, picked up a small stick and commenced to making a splint for my tall friend. The stalk was bent and pinched but not broken completely through, so I'm hopeful that it will work. It's been a day and a half since I patched it up and she's looking just fine this morning, don't you think? Have you ever done something to save a plant or animal that others might think a bit odd?

1. kcook57 (853) | 7 months ago | Marie, this is so pretty, I have never heard of a lily getting this tall.....thatsa tall one. I have never done anything unusual for my plants, if I touch them they seem to die,LOL.......my husband is the flower man, all he has to do is look at them and they grow, he is the one with the green thumb round here. You have a time with your plants & vegetation dont ya? You are faithful to not give up though and it all works out in the end for you.....HUGS!

Ldyjarhead (4936) | 7 months ago | Don't say anything yet, I don't know if it's going to survive. I just want to see the silly thing bloom before it croaks entirely. I'm not even sure what type of lily it is (I'm thinking Asian, though).

3. webeishere (11561) | 7 months ago | I have a couple lilies that were toppled over by the high winds here as well. I did not splinter it nor do a thing with it. it's head is lying on the ground and the buds are getting bigger. I think it will make a great show with the flower almost touching the ground once it opens up. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB!!~

Ldyjarhead (4936) | 7 months ago | The whole plant didn't go over, just the top part of this one. It was heavier due to the buds coming in, and the top 2" or so just bent and almost broke through. I'm hoping the tape and splint will hold it together long enough to flower - after that I don't really care!

Ldyjarhead (4936) | 7 months ago | It's funny you should say that, because my husband had several little trees in a pot and one of them took a good hit in the windstorm a couple of weeks ago. It wasn't even as big around as a pencil and it did snap and he just left it there, saying it was a goner. I put a stick beside that puppy and tied it in two places, not expecting it to make it. It looked so sad laying down that I had to pick it up and at least make it look presentable. I was just out in the yard and decided to look at that little guy and I'll be darned. I loosened the ties and he's standing up on his own - it grew back together! I've never seen anything like it.

blackbriar (5188) | 7 months ago | The biggest splint I ever had to use on a tree was a crabapple I have out front growing under a huge cottonwood. I was cutting one of the big branches off the cottonwood a few years back in hopes of giving the lil guy some direct sunlight. Well, I misjudged the branch's landing zone and it fell right on top of my lil crabapple, breaking the main trunk toward the top and one of it's main side branches. They didn't break off completely so I used some good sized sticks and wire to splint them. The main trunk, which tapers up to the tip, didn't make it because I couldn't splint it right. But the other branch did indeed make it so well that it grew around the wire holding the stick in place. Hubby and I had to cut the wire in the only place we could grasp it to remove the stick. All that work and it's still not getting enough sunlight. I'm going to see if my neighbor can dig it up as well as the pine next to it so I can transplant them to a sunnier spot come fall.
