I have been experimenting with what I guess they call cloning devices for plants. The idea is that instead of planting a seed you can grow nice plants from cuttings in water instead of dirt. The trick is to put a little inline aquarium pump next to the planter (any bowl will do) and run tubing (with a check valve or drip loop to keep water from running back into the motor in case of a power out!) and on the end of the tubing an air stone. I put liquid seaweed and a tiny amount of growth hormone in the water, and then cover the pots with flat panels that have holes in them.

The plants live in little baskets suspended from the cover with the roots partly in the air and partly in the aerated water. Does anyone else do anything like this? Plants can be started from seed in the same way and the photo uploaded here is the first flower that opened from the seed I put in this kind of apparatus a little over 1 1/2 months ago.

This flowers is supposed to be edible, but I have not tasted one yet. Do you eat flowers?

Have you ever eaten one that looks like this?

I would love to hear which flowers people eat and why. Please share!

I have a carrot top that is in water! It recently started a "flower" that looks like it has seeds in it! I have eaten a few flowers that were in my organic produce package, but I can hardly tell you which ones! I think one of them was called nasturtium!

myLot reputation of 93/100. drannhh (5973)   ranked 26 out of 2,204 in gardening  7 months ago

When we lived not far from where you are now, we had a whole yard full of beautiful nasturtium flowers. They are one of my favorite plants, right up there with poppies and anenomes! I have eaten nasturtium flowers too.

myLot reputation of 90/100. olivemai (2705)   ranked 335 out of 2,204 in gardening  7 months ago

I will try to get a picture of them for you! Are they always orange? Too many times, I se them by the side of the road, but I cannot eat them as they are the same level as dogs, if you know what I mean! I will try to grow them again.

myLot reputation of 93/100. drannhh (5973)   ranked 26 out of 2,204 in gardening  7 months ago

Jasmine is nice. It smells very pretty in the evening. I put the name of this flower with the photo so if you click on the photo you will see its name.

I have seen my grandpa growing plants from branch cuttings in out country home. But then it was in the open air and in the garden.
AS a child I remember sucking a sweet juice from some red, lilish kinda flower. Do not remember the name though. It was more out of fun and our gang was a nightmare in the neighborhood. lol..

I never would have guessed!

Could it have been a honeysuckle? We used to suck the juice from them growing up on the farm. Here are some of the 180 species of honeysuckle.

Wow. Sounds like a lot of work. LOL I have only eaten rose petels and the flowers that grow on my pineapple sage bush. The rose petels I candied and put on a cake. The pineapple sage flowers, I put on fish and the taste was out of this world! Last year I grew elephant garlic which also flowers. I used the little seed balls that were on the flowers to cook with. I mashed them up on my cutting board and put them in my recipes instead of garlic and the flavor was wonderful. I need to plant more of that!

myLot reputation of 93/100. drannhh (5973)   ranked 26 out of 2,204 in gardening  7 months ago

I totally love elephant garlic and have never grown that. I have to try some in my contraption, although I'd have to find a nutrient formula that would encourage the flower growth at the expense of the bulbs, as with my method the roots would go in the water but the bulbs, I presume, would have to be suspended in air just above the water and below the growing surface. Did you buy garlic sets or plant some from the grocery store?

myLot reputation of 93/100. girlgonefishing (1222)   ranked 1,067 out of 2,204 in gardening  7 months ago

I bought them at the grocery store. Although, if you can find them, sets are always better. I cut the flower stalks off of the ones that I wanted to use for garlic bulbs and left the others for the flowers. Personally, I think the flowers taste better than the bulbs. LOL

I've got a video called 'I Grow Chronic' that shows you how to set up a hydroponic growing system. It's very interesting and informative. The guy is so organized. He has his face painted green so he can't be recognized.

I've watched the video quite a few times, but I have never done it because I guess I'm just an old-fashioned fuddy-duddy... I really like playing in the dirt, hehehe. I make 'dirt' as a matter of fact. Good, rich, black loamy soil. I have included a photo of 3 compost piles that I have just started.

I also eat flowers. Nasturtiums, Pansies, Calendula, and Violets to name a few.

I start plants in water sometimes. Like the Elderberry bushes that I found growing in Ohio. I snipped a bunch of branches off and put them in water for a few months. I didn't need to keep them in that long, they had roots coming out long before that time was up, but I was traveling etc., but now they are growing in my backyard. I have to take some more cuttings because I am going to be moving somewhere else one of these days and I really LOVE Elderberry wine. You can eat those flowers too.

Making dirt

myLot reputation of 93/100. drannhh (5973)   ranked 26 out of 2,204 in gardening  7 months ago

I wonder why he does not want to be recognized, is he growing MJ? Yes, violets. I forgot about those being edible and now I must keep an eye out for violet seed and plant some as they are so lovely.

Although I don't do wine, we used to harvest elderberries along the roadside (back before they had blacktops and other trappings of "civilization) and juice them. The juice is quite delicious and one doesn't not hear about it often any more. I wonder why not? Acai and Goji and all those good things are all the rage, but I bet elderberries are healthy too.

myLot reputation of 84/100. zigzagbuddha (1683)   ranked 29 out of 2,204 in gardening  7 months ago

Hehehe, yes, that's what he was growing drannhh.

I love the way violets look under an apple tree, with the apple blossoms scattered amongst them. It is so serenely beautiful.

Yeah, that's weird about how particular food items become the rage for awhile and then go out of favor. I love the way Elderberries look, hanging in those clusters of dainty purple berries.

When we were camping in Ohio, where I found the Elderberries growing, on my evening walk I noticed that they were all ripe. I made a mental note to come the next day with a basket, but by the time I got there at about 10AM they were all gone! Every single one of them!!! The birds must have had a yummy breakfast!

myLot reputation of 93/100. drannhh (5973)   ranked 26 out of 2,204 in gardening  5 months ago

Gotta get up early to beat the birds! All those flowers are so wonderful. Bummer, I've missed out, as I never ate an elderberry flower~!

myLot reputation of 84/100. zigzagbuddha (1683)   ranked 29 out of 2,204 in gardening  5 months ago

No, the flowers had turned into rich purple berries. It was the berries the birds were eating. But I took cuttings from those bushes and now I have 7 ft saplings in my backyard! No flowers or berries yet but I suspect that I will see some next year!

What a great and interesting post Ann. As you know I love all gardening info.
I will take a look at the photo now in a sec here.
Speaking of seaweed, I am waiting on something I have ordered for myself for nourishment, made from the sea algae, and hopefully it will give me more energy.
Yes, I have eaten flowers, well the Bach Flower Remedies, not the actual whole flower, that I can recall.
They taste fine and worked well. xoxoox

myLot reputation of 93/100. drannhh (5973)   ranked 26 out of 2,204 in gardening  7 months ago

Well, yes, I love kelp seasoning too. Hubby does not like it on his food, though, so like the curry just season mine with it after cooking.

How is your pothos doing? We still have two of those in dirty, but I just started 3 new plants rooting in my "clone" machine, lol.

myLot reputation of 94/100. OceanTiara (2182)   ranked 27 out of 2,204 in gardening  7 months ago

Oh the Pothos is beautiful Ann, thank you for asking, and I did get my 'seaweed' stuff today..I will need it, as I have my grown son here and the nephew is also coming to me now for the summer here in one small room hahahha. Amazing how many friends you gain while living by the sea..Oh I love it!
This is so cool, this cloning machine you have Ann.
Well, I must tell you a friend here was moving out today from here and asked me to go up the road with her to assist in getting the new room. I did, and while I was there, I saw the beautiful hanging plants with the red bells on them, do you know the name of them? Well, I asked the owner if I could have a sprig of the plant, and I promptly put it in water to root and will hopefully have a new plant soon.
I also got a free tomato plant, and a sweet pea plant by the side of the road..2 plants with a rock in front of them saying FREE LOL, and I never would have seen them if I had not been on my trusty bicycle.
Love the plants, and have put up a nice iron shelf in the back of my window facing the sun, actually a table, and it works well to put all the friends plants out to sun and I can see them so beautiful in the morning sun and the soft rain falling on them Ann..what a beautiful sight. xoxoxoxo

Hey, that is a great description of the flowers, and although you wrote it months ago, I just want to add that a sweet pea "seed" we planted on August 9 just sprouted today. Soon we will have flowers I hope!

Gulmohar flower

myLot reputation of 93/100. drannhh (5973)   ranked 26 out of 2,204 in gardening  7 months ago

Such a pretty flower! When I was a child there were flowers that grew wild in the hills that I loved to suck the nectar from, but they were very different from your Gulmohar, which is the color of our edible Nasturtium flower but very different, too, I guess, as it grows on a vine instead of a tree among other things.

I went an commented on your pretty dianthus, which is a part of the carnation family. I could see me eating it. I do not serve flowers, but I have been tempted and given in from time to time to just grazing off of them. The one that stands out in my mind is that I like to eat rose petals.

myLot reputation of 93/100. drannhh (5973)   ranked 26 out of 2,204 in gardening  7 months ago

I am so clueless about many plants and should look this up, but are Sweet Williams part of the carnation family as well? I think I will try growing them next.

myLot reputation of 96/100. GardenGerty (15281)   ranked 11 out of 2,204 in gardening  7 months ago

I was going to immediately say "yes", but decided to give it a quick look up, and I still will say "yes". The description makes me feel like I should plant it sometie.

Hi there,
I've just had a cheese plant keel over on me, I hadn't repotted it for years and it seems some kind of rot set in. I tried various things to save it and in the end cut the last 4 remaining stems and put them in water. I have potted 2 of them on and just waiting for more root to develop of the others.
I remember Mum doing this with all sorts of soft cuttings when I was young.
I also remember visiting a Medieval House, where they acted out each day as they would have then. In the kitchens they were preparing a banquet and we got to try sugar coated fresh rose petals for a huge platter. I'm also sure that their are varieties of orchid that are edible.

myLot reputation of 93/100. drannhh (5973)   ranked 26 out of 2,204 in gardening  7 months ago

That Medieval House sounds very cool! Can you help me out here, however, as I do not believe I know what a cheese plant is. Can you describe it for me? Maybe I know it by another name.

myLot reputation of 90/100. dragonstar1 (169)   ranked 1,486 out of 2,204 in gardening  7 months ago

Hi there a Swiss Cheese plant or Monstera Delicosa. They grow great big leaves with holes in them. I've not worked out how to add photos yet. Maybe if your stuck I can get a pic uploaded? The place we went to was Kentwell hall if you ever visit the UK. Although I'm sure there are other places that do that type of thing around.

We have lots of edible flowers in my country but i don't really know most of thier name... but i sure love eating them... one thing i know is the cauliflower... i am not even sure if that is really a flower... but it is quite tasty and nutritious...

You put a lot of time and work for your little experiment... and judging from the photo... it is quite successful... but i don't think i can eat the flower... it looks too beautiful... i might just put it in a vase to decorate my home for a while...

Congratulations on your successful experiment...

That is my problem too, I could not ruin the blossom in its prime just to satisfy my taste. On the other hand, I eat the greens from my Okra plants so fast than I doubt if they will ever have a chance to make the vegetable. The leaves are probably more healthy anyway, but I want to see the flowers. After flowering, however, they say the leaves of the plant are not tasty anymore. I will have to choose!
