If the US starts The Draft... email this discussion to a friend?

myLot reputation of 93/100. thelastwolf113 (1986)   ranked 156 out of 3,894 in politics4 months ago

...will women be drafted too?
I find this a disconcerting prospect. Now that women are in the Military, it's a good possibility that they can be drafted into war also. It would be discriminatory to only draft males.

I am totally against the Draft for anyone. No one should be forced to kill others, no matter who's name it's done in.

It's pretty ironic that Lincoln was the one to start the Draft, contrary to the 13th Amendment of the US Constitution.

The Text of the 13th Amendment from Wikipedia:
Section 1. Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime where of the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.

What is the Draft but 'forced servitude'?

Unless something very drastic happened the draft will not be reinitiated because the all volunteer military is doing fine but I doubt that women would be drafted if it were. I don't believe that the American public would stand by silently while women were called up and, as far as I know, the military is not bound by any rules of discrimination in that area. I also don't see serving in the military as forced servitude because I believe that every country has the need and the right to have a strong military and, if there are not enough who join on their own, then they have the right to draft the number they need.

myLot reputation of 93/100. thelastwolf113 (1986)   ranked 156 out of 3,894 in politics  4 months ago

The US's volunteer army is not doing well, recruits are down significantly. If we keep up with this war and keep on going, which appears likely with both candidates for the Presidency having ideas of who we should kill next, then there will be a Draft.

Why wouldn't the Military be bound by anti-discrimination laws?
If you don't want to go, then it IS forced servitude.

myLot reputation of 98/100. moneyandgc (2916)   ranked 1,289 out of 3,894 in politics  4 months ago

Why wouldn't the Military be bound by anti-discrimination laws?

Do you think they are bound or that they should be? Don't you think that kicking gays out of the military is discriminatory? That right there shows that they are not bound from discrimination.

My dad is retired military, my ex is military, my brother-in-law is military, my brother is military and my husband is military. Not one of them think we are in danger of having the draft re-instated.

I know the Air Force actually goes through phases of kicking out as many people as they can to lower their numbers. The branches are starting to go to joint military operation. I am very doubtful a draft will ever take place again. I don't think they would force women in regardless, they would make some loophole.

myLot reputation of 93/100. thelastwolf113 (1986)   ranked 156 out of 3,894 in politics  4 months ago

Homosesuals are in the military. Remember Don't Ask, Don't Tell.

I hope we don't have a draft at all.

I have a co-worker who is a close personal friend of a very high placed general and according to that general there will be a draft in about 3 years.

My next door neighbor is in the Air Force, it costs a lot of money to train Air Force personnel. They ar ehighly specialized jobs. If a draft occurs it's not to draft people into the Air Force but infantry Army.
Regular Infantry Army is cheap, 6 weeks in boot camp, give 'em a gun and their on the way.

myLot reputation of 93/100. bellaofchaos (2281)   ranked 155 out of 3,894 in politics  4 months ago

Thelastwolf,

I will say this my exhusband was army and no it's not 6weeks and give them a gun it's three months of intensive training for what ever you go for in the army. Sorry that you are misinformed there on the length of time to train.

myLot reputation of 93/100. thelastwolf113 (1986)   ranked 156 out of 3,894 in politics  4 months ago

Basic Combat Training, or BCT, is now a 9-week training period that is identical for all Military Operational Specialties. (wikipedia)

It seems we were both wrong. But the EXACT same amount, we'll at least we have something in common. LOL (It's a joke, just clarifying so you don't think I mean something else.)

Peace between us?

myLot reputation of 78/100. bobmnu (1617)   ranked 96 out of 3,894 in politics  4 months ago

My son's unit was activated and spent 6 months in training before they were sent to Iraq. This did not include the special weekend training. All the solders had received basic training of 9 weeks and Advanced Individual Training ranging from around 4 weeks to 18 months. My other son's unit is scheduled to be deployed sometime next year. They will spend three weeks this summer in special training and have specific training they are to do at their weekend drills. When the troops are sent over they are as well prepared for what they will face as the Army can make them.

The feminist groups would be in a bit of a dilema if there was a draft. On the one hand, they have fought hard for women to be accepted as equals in the military. On the other hand, they have fought hard for women's right to choose.

I, for one, agree with you. There is no Constitutional backing for a draft (men or women). When I was an Army NCO, I was glad there wasn't a draft. I would much rather work with troops who chose to enlist, and for Officers who voluntarily accepted commissions.

myLot reputation of 93/100. thelastwolf113 (1986)   ranked 156 out of 3,894 in politics  4 months ago

It is a dilemna.
The women's right to choose is more about health issues and abortion. Regardless of what 'right to choose' means, if women have a right to choose then wouldn't men also have the same right?

myLot reputation of 69/100. ParaTed2k (2386)   ranked 209 out of 3,894 in politics  4 months ago

One would think, but I've found that most special interest groups (feminist or others) are more into demanding special privileges. Calling them "equality" just sounds better.

myLot reputation of 93/100. thelastwolf113 (1986)   ranked 156 out of 3,894 in politics  4 months ago

Special priviledges and equality, sounds rather ridiculous, doesn't it? Since 'special priviledges' insures that you are not treated equal to everyone else.

myLot reputation of 69/100. ParaTed2k (2386)   ranked 209 out of 3,894 in politics  4 months ago

They do seem mutually exclusive, but in a world where you're accused of "discrimination" if you don't specifically single out a group.. oh nevermind, it causes headaches. lol

Excellent point! I guess growing up in an era without any wars that would invoke the draft it is something that I have never give much thought to. I haven't heard the candidates talk about this subject but then I haven't listened to much of what they have had to say because being in one of the swing states I will be bombarded now that the convention is over with.
I agree that no one should be forced to go into the military and go into combat. It doesn't seem very fair to have this going on. Thanks for the great discussion, I will be watching to see other's opinions.

myLot reputation of 93/100. thelastwolf113 (1986)   ranked 156 out of 3,894 in politics  4 months ago

McCain want us to go to Iran and Obama says we should go to Afghanistan and Pakistan 'where we belong'.
Either way it seems we are going to be a war for quite some time.

myLot reputation of 81/100. ZephyrSun (1606)   ranked 53 out of 3,894 in politics  4 months ago

Oh Iran? How wonderful is that? I need to turn on my television more often, we have not had a president stupid enough to take on Iran although with Iraq in pieces I am sure it would be easier. I wish we could find a president that would realize that we can't fix the worlds problems and need to fix our own problems. Thanks for filling me in.

myLot reputation of 93/100. thelastwolf113 (1986)   ranked 156 out of 3,894 in politics  4 months ago

Yes, it's about Iran's nuclear program. Which is pretty ironic since the US has the most WMD in the world.

Well, it is wrong.. And so many innocent lives will be lost too. I never will join the military.. I don't want to get pulled out for one either.. I hope that this law changes soon. There are already many brave soldiers, whom have lost their lives in the war.. We don't need anymore lives taken away..

myLot reputation of 93/100. thelastwolf113 (1986)   ranked 156 out of 3,894 in politics  4 months ago

I hope it doesn't come to a draft, but if it does, these are the issues that need to be dealt with.
I can't imagine being forced into a war, and there is no way I want to see women being drafted, or men for that matter. BUT there is no way, they can only draft men, since women ARE part of the Military and they fight in combat. What would be the basis of of discriminating against them for combat draft?

I am afraid that if McCain wins the election, they will have no choice but to bring back the draft. To continually fight wars, there has to be a constant supply of troops and with moral down and the number of volunteers dwindling, it would seem almost inevitable.
As far as the ladies being drafted, I am against that idea, altogether. But since we don't seem to have much say with our govt anymore, they would do what they want.
If a woman wants to join, that is her choice but with all the people coming back in pieces, I don't see that anyone made a point there. The empty idea of GLORY doesn't make up for a lost child, or a lost arm, leg...whatever!
I, for one, saw all the so-called glory of Vietnam. What a waste of perfectly good lives?

myLot reputation of 93/100. thelastwolf113 (1986)   ranked 156 out of 3,894 in politics  4 months ago

I grew up during the Vietnam War, which is EXACTLY why I am against the Draft.
Obama's no better, I thought he was good because he said he wants to get us of Iraq. Until I read that he wants us to go to Afghanistan and Pakistan. So much for no more war.
All I know is, they are NOT getting my only son, even if we have to leave this country.

good day.... That's why I hate wars if things could be cooled down through diplomatic ways I think issues like this needn't need answering. Wishful thinking I should say, we're not perfect creatures and we make imperfect decisions. Regarding the draft, I think it's kinda wrong but then again it's the most effective in terms of equality and fairness in acquiring man at arms when need be, specially when the volunteers are insufficient. Who else going to fight for the country? Though I'm not in favor of drafting woman into arms. just my one cent.

myLot reputation of 93/100. thelastwolf113 (1986)   ranked 156 out of 3,894 in politics  4 months ago

Diplomacy is the art of the rational man.
Seems we're lacking rational men these days.
War proves nothing, even when you 'win', you lose.
Things can be settled diplomatically BUT both sides have to rational.
What irks me is that with our current level of technology, there is no need for a ground war. It is all so pointless.

myLot reputation of 78/100. bobmnu (1617)   ranked 96 out of 3,894 in politics  4 months ago

What has diplomacy gotten us. In Korea we are still in a state of war with families divided and not being allowed to see each other because the Diplomats decided on drawing a line and closing the border without anyone knowing it.

The middle east is the way it is today because the Diplomats divided up the Ottiman Empire after WWI and did not want any one group to have too much power. The Kurds were split between four countries, the Sheites were split between 2-3 countries, the Persions were forced to accept several minority groups to dilute their power.

A military Victory in Germany and Japan after WWII give us peace and prosperity in those two countries.

Don't tell me that diplomacy is the answer. Diplomacy only works wehn you have a strong military to back it up and enforce your treaties. Look at the UN not on successful diplomatic resolution to any world conflict with out the use of military forces and in many of those area you still have UN peace keeping forces.

myLot reputation of 93/100. thelastwolf113 (1986)   ranked 156 out of 3,894 in politics  4 months ago

As opposed to war? LMAO

myLot reputation of 78/100. bobmnu (1617)   ranked 96 out of 3,894 in politics  4 months ago

The Korean Police Action (UN's Wording) was enforcing enforcing a Dipolomatic Solution to a problem and not a war.

The Marines Killed in Leabon were peace keeping not in a war.

Battle of Mogadishu where the US lost several solders doing what the UN and Diplomacy wanted them to do and then because of the Diplomatic and UN Rules more solders were put at risk. UN drivers would not let US Soldiers into personal Carriers because all the seats were taken by Prisoners and he would not overload his vehicle. This while the US soldiers were taking fire after capturing the prisoners as per UN request. Then the UN talked to this warlord and he said he would allow aid shipments to go through but only if his men delivered the food. The UN let them go and the Warlord took food for his army and gave some to the starving people who supported him. To refresh your memory this is where they dragged the bodies of US Service men through the streets and we were not allowed to reclaim the bodies by using force.

Peace works best when you have a strong army to back it up. Words alone will not work

It is interesting that the talk of a Draft has only come from the Democrats and if you look at the numbers enlistments are up and the services are not having a problem recurting good people to serve in the military. the problem with using the National Guard and the Reserves started when President Carter and President Clinton cut the number of troops for the Military. During the Clinton Administration we lost many excellent service people with 10 - 20 years experience due to cut backs and reduction in force. We are now paying the price for not having enough experience Officers and NCO in the military.

With a draft you would reduce the quality of the soldiers and cause more problems for the military.

I am sorry that you feel you son is too good to fight for his country. I have two sons who are in the military fighting for you safety and your sons freedom. Both of them feel a sense of duty to their country. I ask you to remember that Freedom isn't Free someone has to defend it.

myLot reputation of 93/100. thelastwolf113 (1986)   ranked 156 out of 3,894 in politics  4 months ago

I agree that the worst thing this country could have done was reduce Military Personnel and decommission Military Bases.

I never said my son is too good to fight for this country. If we were invaded on US soil, then both of us would fight for this country. As it is, the Iraq War is illegal.

I'm glad you are proud of your sons. However, they are not fighting for MY freedom or MY safety. Iraq is not and never has been a threat to my freedom or safety.

It seems the leaders of today bend the very laws they should follow just to suit their purpose. What is new?

Several years ago, only male were trained to become reservists here in the Philippines. Now, they let women join the reservists. They kept on celebrating independence day and at the same time recruiting soldiers, even women, just to what, rule the world?

Men have always been in the military and they have no choice, when the government says Go To War, they have to go whether they want to or not. Why would women be given the choice?
The point of the Draft is there we are not given a choice.
