 A Debit card is a plastic card which provides an alternative payment method to cash when making purchases. Its functionality is more similar to writing a cheque as the funds are withdrawn directly from either the bank account (often referred to as a cheque card), or from the remaining balance on the card. In some cases, the cards are designed exclusively for use on the Internet, and so there is no physical card.In potential cases, the card may be completely different compared to these two examples.
The use of debit cards has become wide-spread in many countries and has overtaken the cheque, and in some instances cash transactions by volume. Like credit cards, debit cards are used widely for telephone and Internet purchases. This may cause inconvenient delays at peak shopping times (e.g., the last shopping day before Christmas), caused when the volume of transactions overloads the bank networks.
In some countries the debit card is multipurpose, acting as the ATM card for withdrawing cash and as a cheque guarantee card. Merchants can also offer "cashback"/"cashout" facilities to customers, where a customer can withdraw cash along with their purchase....Do You Prefer Debit Cards?

1.  howard96h (4909) | 4 months ago |  A debit card is great to use in place of a cheque where many merchants refuse or are afraid to accept cheques for insufficient funds. It has it advantages and disadvantages like everything. Sometimes I prefer to use a credit card in place of a debit card because some credit card companies give you an extended guarantee if your charge the product and if there is something wrong with a product you purchased you can always reverse the charge and dispute it a lot easier as opposed to using the debit card when your funds have already been deducted. Using a debit online is great because the merchant doesn't have to wait for cheque clearance and your order is processed a lot faster.

| howard96h (4909) | 4 months ago | Your debit card is linked to your checking account so say for example you use Citibank, then anyone can go to any Citibank and make a deposit into your account as long as they have the checking account number. I do this when I send money to my brother, I go to his bank where I live and make a deposit. If you have a paypal account you can also receive money through paypal without giving the person your checking account number, you just give them your paypal email address. I would only give out my checking account number to someone I trust 100% otherwise I would use paypal. | |

| howard96h (4909) | 4 months ago | I use paypal often and trust them and never have any problems with them, my earnings from mylot goes right in my paypal account. Just remember there a lot of fake impostor emails going around that pretend to be paypal as long as you don't respond to any of them or click on any of their link in that email you will be ok. When you want to access your paypal account just type paypal into your browser window and go directly from there. Paypal will never ever ask you in an email to verify your personal info, account number or pin number. | |

| tirtha9 (409) | 4 months ago | lots of info...thanks...one more thing....jus like paypal/moneybookers...theres another service called neteller...guess u have heared....and guess as ur from the US u cant use it...but anyway...some of those paypal like cousins...(neteller)....apart from giving paypal like services.....gives their..customers a Visa/Mastercard prepaid card by which u can cash out from your local Atm....u dont have to have a bank account even...u have any idea on this?...and lastly.....say i cash out from my local atm or a atm abroad(that card support a list of countries)...do i have to pay taxes as income there?....what happens..as u said u send money to your bro...does he pay taxes on the money recieved directly onto the card?... | |

| howard96h (4909) | 4 months ago | Yes that is another option, the Visa/Mastercard prepaid card you can have your money put in there and take it from an ATM. I am not sure about the taxes from abroad, when I send the money to my brother I am not sending a bank money transfer which has a fee, I just deposit it in the same bank that he uses. If he's using Citibank in Florida I go to Citibank in NY and make a deposit into his checking account. | |

| tirtha9 (409) | 4 months ago | sorry for being a headache one moretime....but florida-Ny got that funda....but say florida to say cuba(nearest neighbor) or say canada....same citibank....you deposit in florida he collect...in canada ...it that considered an income?or say vice versa he deposit in canada u cash out in florida....will u be paying taxes?.....(i assume its citibank only and is jus deposited and not a bank transfer....)then wat happens? | |

| howard96h (4909) | 4 months ago | Regarding out of the country transactions I do not know - sorry. You would have to contact the banking institution and inquire of their rules. I know banks allow transfers from one of their branches to another branch in another country but I don't know if there are taxes involved or just transfer fees. | |
