Is bedtime harder in the summer? |
|
I am having the hardest time getting the kids to sleep before 10pm. It is 8:15 right now and still so bright out the kids won't stay in bed. They even skipped nap today so they are so tired I could cry but still won't sleep. Do you have a hard time getting your kids to bed when it is still light outside?

1. Sillychick (1793) | 4 months ago | I've had a little trouble lately, not just at bedtime, but my son also wakes up earlier in the morning because it is light out. I put dark curtains on his windows and that has helped. He has been having an easier time, especially with sleeping a little later in the morning.

surveygrrl (781) | 4 months ago | I haven't had so much trouble int he morning but my kids can sleep through a lt once they fall asleep and wake up kind of early anyway. I think I do need to go get a nice dark curtain to put in their room. The blind just isn't doing the trick.

2. ravinskye (4669) | 4 months ago | my daughter kind of tried to fight it a little. she kept saying "but mommy its still light out". after about the 5th time of explaining that it stays light out later but that it was still bed time, i think she got it. i just pulled the blinds down in their rooms to make it alitte darker so they could fall asleep.

3. indianpedi (1163) | 4 months ago | It is difficult to sleep in summer months in tropical weather, which is what I have been living in all my life. We find it easier to put kids to bed in winter and the rainy season, but no in summer! In summer, according to Ayurveda (the Indian system of medicine), the 'sadhak pitta' in our body is raised, leading to an increased state of wakefulness. For more information about pitta, you could visit herbaltradition.com/ayur.htm

4. marina321 (852) | 4 months ago | Yeah, mine is also saying 'it's still bright outside' or 'the sun is shining' but when she sees me lie down and sleep, she will too.. In the summer, the days seem longer and unless she's had a good play at nursery school, she may not feel tired and will be bouncing off the walls till late. I have got to lie down with her still.. They're so adorable and sweet, no concept of time whatsoever!:)

surveygrrl (781) | 4 months ago | Yes, my kids ar very active and i have to do a lot of playing and activities during the day to tire them out and then being bright out so late doesn't help. My son is starting t keep track of the time and when certan things happen but my daughter has no concept.

5. mmiller26 (1200) | 4 months ago | I don't find it more difficult so much because of the light but because it's now officially summer and my son just wants to play now that he's out of school. However, I've made the rule that during the school year bedtime is 8pm, and during the summer he can stay up til 9pm. What that means, however, is that at 8:45 he needs to go potty, get his pajamas on and get his cup of milk, and then it's lights out by 9. If he stays up past 9pm, he's got to go to bed early the next night to make up for it. It works for us, because he takes me seriously and knows I'll follow through with my threat. lol.

surveygrrl (781) | 4 months ago | I don't even mind them staying up until 9pm but not without taking a nap during the day. It is when they stay up until 10pm or sometimes later. I am trying to start the bedtime routine before it gets dark so when they are bathed and dressed and ready for bed it is almost dark out.

mmiller26 (1200) | 4 months ago | I couldn't get my son to take a nap after he turned 1. And if he did, then he wouldn't fall asleep at night. A lot of nights he'd be up til midnight and I couldn't get him to settle down, so we scrapped nap time. Then he'd play hard all day and crash at 8pm and sleep all night.

surveygrrl (781) | 4 months ago | I don' shout at my kids, they do play all day and they don't eat a lot of junk food. They do get freezie pops in the afternoon but with the heat index it has been over 100 degrees every day. They just naturally have a lot of energy. Knowing that it is still light out just confuses them I think.

| 7. HISMINEOURS (69) | 4 months ago | I had the some problems but the one thing that always tired them out was swimming during the day and early in the evening. Even if it is just one of those wal mart quick set pools. They would come in hungry and tired and sleep was never far behind!

8. guss2000 (1019) | 4 months ago | It doesn't really apply to my kid because he goes to bed between 9 and 10 every night and is up at 7:30. He normally goes to sleep fairly quickly, although the last few nights have been harder for some odd reason, but i don't think it's the season that's doing it.
