My First Sale! |
I joined Etsy several months ago and listed a few of my baby blankets and afghans, but didn't really hold out much hope of a sale since there is a lot of competition out there. There are some very crafty people selling some incredibly beautiful things there and I am truly impressed. Well I got an email on Saturday saying that I made my first sale! A woman had purchased one of my baby blankets and paid for it immediately, and I've just put it in the mail to her today. I've included a picture below. I sure hope she likes it! What sort of crafts do you make? Do you have a shop on etsy?

1. lilybug (8719) | 4 months ago | You did a really good job on the baby blanket that you just sold on Etsy. I do not really do any crafty stuff. I am more into baking than crafts. My grandmother used to make baby blankets, afghans, quilts, doilies, and all that stuff. She loved it. I never learned how.

Ldyjarhead (4675) | 4 months ago | Thanks! I don't do any of the fancy things like doilies and such, I just can't master a pattern that goes round and round; it's too easy to lose my place. I prefer to do baby blankets, afghans, scarves and that sort of thing. You can put it down and pick it back up at any time and not have to worry about where you left off. I've never had one come out lopsided yet! I also do place mats, hot pads/trivets, and dishcloths too.

mentalward (1739) | 4 months ago | I just realized that I never answered your questions! I do a lot of craftwork. I knit, crochet, sew, paint, sculpt, work with wood, make jewelry, blah blah blah. I've never gotten into any one thing long enough to start a store. I've thought about Etsy, but can't decide which of my crafts I should go for. I'm just starting bas relief in clay and I love it, so maybe that's what I'll stick with.
| |
Ldyjarhead (4675) | 4 months ago | Yes, I did it myself. There are one or two patters that I do over and over, and then sometimes I take the pattern and modify if a bit to suit what I'm doing. I think that's what I did with this. I've made several afghans and baby blankets with this one; it's a very, very quick and simple thing to do. Do you have photos of any of your projects? (I approved the friend request. I was surprised that we weren't already too!).
| |
Ldyjarhead (4675) | 4 months ago | I don't think you'd need to commit to one medium with etsy. Give it a shot! My husband has been working with rock and semi-precious stones and I may take out some of my beading/jewelry making stuff and mess with that again. He's going to be making belt buckles, bolo ties, and maybe some pendants. He makes awesome cabochons. I hope to start listing some of those things too.

mentalward (1739) | 4 months ago | Okay, here's another thing I can't believe. I don't have any photos of any of my work! I'm charging up the battery to my camera now. I'll post them as soon as I can. What is the crochet stitch you used? From what I can see it is unique. Doesn't look like single or double crochet... something a little more decorative, I'd say. I'm so curious because I've been crocheting since I was about 14, and that stitch looks so smooth and regular, but also unique. Don't worry... I won't give you any more competition on Etsy! LOL I'm just curious.

mentalward (1739) | 4 months ago | That's awesome! You and your husband both sound so talented! My husband knows how to work on a computer and heat things in the microwave. That's about it. LOL

mentalward (1739) | 4 months ago | I just remembered that I have a picture of one of my "paintings" in my photos here in myLot. I wouldn't try to sell this one, though. It's a poster I made to try to win front row tickets and backstage passes to meet the Rolling Stones and see them perform. I won!!!! My son actually fell in "love" with those legs. LOL
| |
mentalward (1739) | 4 months ago | Okay, it was the "skip two" part that threw me. I don't think I've ever done that with a single crochet before... double, yes, but not single. These colors are also beautiful. You're going to do well. Oh, the Rolling Stones aren't my cup of tea, either, but it was a contest where artwork was involved, so I went for it. I never thought I'd be picked as the winner!
| |
Ldyjarhead (4675) | 4 months ago | Oh, The 'Stones weren't the issue, it was the half nekkid lady. Great artwork, but she just didn't do anything for me, ya know? LOL ...

bunnybon7 (975) | 4 months ago | wow! i had no idea this site existed. i thought everything had to be sold on ebay, for pete sake. LOL! i do Native American beadwork. i used to sell it at pow wow's but now you can put a lot of work into belt buckles, key chains, etc and get very little money for them because of the machine mades. from other countries.

3. sweetdesign (1840) | 4 months ago | Congratulations!! After two years on etsy I have two sales but I am not very active on there. I do ceeramics, polymer clay, and I just started making bears. I have Rufus listed on ebay and hope he sells.

| |
sweetdesign (1840) | 4 months ago | Oh by the way I am sure she will love it as it is gorgeous!!
| |
Ldyjarhead (4675) | 4 months ago | Yes, I saw your Rufus and he is absolutely adorable. I'm sure you'll do well with him (and maybe some brothers/sisters?). I know some friends that worked with polymer clay and it is an amazing medium. I've got a few things that she made and sold and they are gorgeous.

mentalward (1739) | 4 months ago | Sorry to poke my nose in here, but I just read what you said about polymer clay. That what I'm using for my bas relief! I'm inspired now!
| |
sweetdesign (1840) | 4 months ago | I do mostly dolls and jewelry with polymer clay. I just started a new bear he will be 10 inches standing height he is done in fabric though and will have a special surprise. Hopefully I can get him finished this week and listed but I am waiting for parts cause he will jointed.

4. thebeaddoodler (1472) | 4 months ago | Congratulations on your sale! I do many kinds of crafts. Mostly lately I've been making beaded jewelry and I also make patterns for some of my designs. I learned to crochet when I was 4 and have done a lot of crochet work through the years. Just now I'm starting to get into crocheting bags etc. out of plastic grocery bags. I also make natural soap, salves and other skin care products. I have an Etsy shop but haven't sold any of my jewelry. The patterns sell better.

Ldyjarhead (4675) | 4 months ago | As I mentioned above, my husband has been playing with rocks (LOL) and I hope that between us we can make a few things and get those listed as well. He really enjoys it. I've found several patterns for crocheting with bags and would love to do it, but I can't seem to get mine to work well without breaking. I know you need a large hook so I bought a big plastic one, and maybe that's the problem - it sorta sticks to it. What type of needle do you use?
| |
thebeaddoodler (1472) | 4 months ago | I use an aluminum hook, various sizes depending on how wide I cut the strips. I have some of the huge plastic hooks that I used to use to make the rag strip baskets, but I haven't tried using them on the plastic bags. Both of the ones I have are too big to give me the effect I want.

5. oneandonemakesix (24158) | 4 months ago | I've never heard of Etsy, I am but a simple person trying to scratch out a living with my husband and make a few bucks online, not that I'm overly successful at that.... I make just a few bucks here and there, but it all adds up. I'm happy you made a sale, and I hope you make many more sales and more contacts. Mooch

Ldyjarhead (4675) | 4 months ago | I know what you mean, Mooch. The payment for this bought the printer ink cartridge that I needed yesterday. I wouldn't have been able to buy it yet if that sale hadn't gone through unexpectedly!

6. terri0824 (3029) | 4 months ago | That's awesome that you made your first Sale on ETSY. I've heard of it but I don't have a shop there. Though one day when things slow down a bit I might check into it a bit further. I like crocheting and making jewelry with beads. But haven't had much time to do either for a bit.

Ldyjarhead (4675) | 4 months ago | Go ahead and check it out. It only costs .20 to list an item, and they don't bill you until you have at least $1.00 in fees due. I listed 4 things so my bill came to .80 and they've been listed for a couple of months now and I haven't had to pay anything. I'm sure I will now since I made a sale, but it's still a very minimal amount.

Ldyjarhead (4675) | 4 months ago | I've toyed with the idea of making jewelry too, but that market is saturated too. I still enjoy playing with it, though, and probably will pick it up again since my husband is now doing a few different things. My shop is at http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=5675182 I've only got three things up right now. Thanks!
