Looks like I'll be getting fresh farm milk! |
|
I am so excited that I won't be paying close to $4 a gallon for processed milk anymore! I found an agricultural barter group locally and posted my desire to barter something for farm milk. I got a response from a farm just a few miles away! So we're going to set up a trade system so I can get milk from them. I gave a few different options on what to barter but whatever they chose I'll still be getting the milk cheaper than from a store. So, for a discussion I thought I'd give you all a tip. If you use yahoo groups for "Freecycle" and things like that, you may want to enter your town name in the "search for groups" box instead of the type of group you're looking for. When I did it I put in the county name since it's a rural area but I found several really good free and barter groups that I wouldn't have otherwise known about since they aren't under the better known "Freecycle" or "Bartercycle" headlines. You all might find other local groups that can help you save even more money. Just this one barter with the new group looks to be saving me about $10 a week on milk, which adds up pretty fast!

1. Erilyn (432) | 4 months ago | I love freecycle! I have gotten some stuff from there and either used it as is or turned it into something else. (see my post about being thrifty lol.) I have gotten a scanner, copier, fax from freecycle as well as many other things. Unfortuantly I don't live in a rural area and can't do a barter like that. It would be nice though, have you looked into angel food ministries? thats also a great way to save a lot of money on groceries!

foxyfire33 (5754) | 4 months ago | I did check that out a while ago but they didn't have anything locally. I'll have to check back in with them...especially since I moved 20 miles from where I was which makes a difference!

Erilyn (432) | 4 months ago | Just recently a church here started doing it. before that it was too far away. It might be a good idea if there isn't a chruch locally that does it, to talk with some of them and see if one would be interested in doing something with them. I talked to a lot of different churches to get them involved locally and one finally stepped up and did it. My mom had been going through them for years now, and many people that she works with does also. There isn't a church close to her that does it but there are enough people that she works with that take part in it that they take turns going and picking up the food there. my mom only goes every 6 months to do a pickup run lol. So if you can't get the churches close to get involved maybe you can get something like that together and help out others as well.

2. lilybug (8741) | 4 months ago | Awesome! I get 5 gallons of milk a month on WIC for my daughter, but I still manage to run out of milk before I can use my next set of coupons. Milk can get expensive otherwise.

foxyfire33 (5754) | 4 months ago | With all of us, we go through close to a gallon a day! I figure if I can get 3-4 from the farm, it will make a noticeable difference. Plus, the farm is closer than the grocery store so I'll be saving gas too...which I hadn't thought of before!

3. OreoCookie3 (13784) | 4 months ago | That sounds great but what do you trade? I don't have anything to trade. I need everything I got... which isn't a whole lot. Or do you barter services like sweeping the store or something?

foxyfire33 (5754) | 4 months ago | Me personally? I offered some baked goods or a couple meals a week in exchange for the milk. I figured it up and even with what I have to pay for those supplies I can still cut the milk budget in half. The site in general? People trade hay, chicks, hens, eggs, stud services, garden vegetables, cleaning, sewing...pretty much anything that is hand done, home made, or home grown.

5. ellie333 (5193) | 4 months ago | Oh that is excellent news Foxyfire, I am really pleased for you. I use Freecycle here in the UK so thanks for the tip. We in fact have a lot of communities here that use just bartering. One lady will bake pies and exchange them for having here windows cleaned as an example. I think it is great and have also found other groups simlar to Freecycle but slightly different. I will have a girlie night every now and again and we all bring a bin liner of unwanted items and play swaps and anything left over goes down to a local charity shop or for a school jumble. The things we chose are new to us and haven't cost, its great. I love these evenings. Ellie:D

6. Fishmomma (3322) | 4 months ago | I haven't found anything in my area, but am not giving up. Sadly, keep finding them an hour away from me and the high price of gas would mean no savings. Its $5.00 a gallon between where the bartering areas are from me. I'm glad you have found a great deal and hope everyone is able to save a lot of money.

7. DonnaLawson (1771) | 4 months ago | That is such a great deal.. Especially as the milk is going to be going up in price again according to the newspaper.. I joined Freecycle after I read your post and am waiting to see if I am approved or not.. I hope I am, as I would love to trade something unwanted for something needed.. Sounds great, good going..

9. ljegbers (5761) | 4 months ago | Well thank you little lady! I've never heard of freecycle, but will check it out. I'm in such a remote area that I wonder if I'll find something. One of our local towns (about 3 miles away) isn't even on most state maps! I get milk from a dairy farm about 3 miles from us. Milk here - even generic brand - is $4.69 per gallon, but I buy whole, unproccessed milk for $2.70 per gallon. I agree, it adds up quickly. I wish I'd put in a big garden this year becasue of food prices. My big lot, 30 x 60 is where I'd grow my potatoes and beans. I'd have enough for about 10 months when I planted it. This year and last year I didn't because of time and I didn't have the equipment. Weeding took forever and I didn't have the man power. Now if I had a tiller, that would be prime. Maybe I'll fork over the $400. and get one for next year. I'm looking for sales on them this fall/winter to try and get on cheaper.
