gas prices...AGAIN |
|
Okay. So we can't bully the gas companies to reduce prices, governments can't stop digging in our pockets from the taxes on fuel, so I have an idea that might just make things better for the consumer. In Nova Scotia, Canada, they have a program on where oil companies are required by law to give notice of increasing prices. I think that notice is two weeks but I could be wrong. Not a bad idea. However, I think I would like to go one better than that. Since the prices for fuel do not vary in any community, I am thinking that my province's consumer protection legislation could be ammended to read that two weeks notice shall be given for an increase in prices AND that there shall be one price for fuel within this province. That would mean prices would be the same EVERYWHERE in BC. This might be applicable in your province or state too. It would at least add stability and would give the consumer notice of a price increase. Independant retailers would also be bound by this rule. We had one little man who would increase his prices at a moments notice, ranking in extra money for himself. It would be nothing for him to raise his prices a few cents per liter (10 or 12 cents per gallon) for a few hours and then drop it back down near closing time. Since fuel is not a luxury, prices should be controlled at least a little bit. But then, that's MY opinion...

1. TheSpy (3383) | 4 months ago | Hi Mike: It's not the law in B.C. to do that, (as you know). I think we should view the oil companies as a cartel and that is illegal in Canada. Ivor

BCMike (1785) | 4 months ago | No, you are quite correct. It's not the law in BC. I was only floating a balloon to see if this would be reasonable. Because oil prices are global, and since there is no will on a federal level to address this cartel issue, steps have to be taken on a provincial level. So without being accused of being a flaming commie, I am suggesting a way to soften the blow of fuel price changes. Putting oil companies under a public utilities commission might be a way to give BC consumers a break.

2. KrisNY (7330) | 4 months ago | Wouldn't it be nice if prices were the same! I can go to 6 different gas stations in my small town-- and on any given day- 4 out of the 6 are different. I wish there was a way to do this- I'd take a 2 week notice-- then again I think the gas stations would be issuing them daily so they could raise it daily-

BCMike (1785) | 4 months ago | Keeping gas price changes to once each two weeks would stop the daily applications as you have thought. People want and need stability.

3. snowy22315 (5079) | 4 months ago | I think everyone pretty much knows that gas prices are going to increase at this point. It's just a question of when. I think there are variations in city and county taxes, environmental regulations that vary from jurisdiction to jurisdiction etc. I don't think it would really be possible at least in the US to regulate the gas prices that much. I don think anyone increasing the price too much has many customers.

BCMike (1785) | 4 months ago | I don't know exactly how states do it there. State and local taxes don't change that much. And as I recall, they are on a percentage basis. That means that the only variable will be the cost as applied for by the oil companies. Not stopping changes. Just slowing them down and allowing a bit of a breather for the consumer is all.

BCMike (1785) | 4 months ago | There is no stopping the independant from adjusting his/her prices. But because the commodity is an essential item and not a luxury, the independant distributor/retailer can still carry on business. There would just be a simple requirement of notice of increases. They would have to be given notice as soon as the supplier gave them notice of an increase. Forms could be online for them to use. A decrease in price could be instant without notice. But any subsequent increase would be subject to a notice of intent first. And they could also have an advantage over the large branded retailers because they would be able to offer a smaller increase than the big guys because they would only have a single station as compared to the chains which would be suject to the uniform pricing provisions province or state wide.

BCMike (1785) | 4 months ago | See, I am actually running for political office in my province. And my party is the ONLY party with a comprehensive plan to strip politicians of the power to abuse the citizens. I believe the citizens deserve a chance for a change. www.electmikesummers.com To that end, I want something meaningful to give to BC. And I only need to be there JUST ONCE.

trish32 (686) | 4 months ago | First let me say that I was in BC several years back and you have an absolutely beautiful province! Next, I looked at your website and I really like your platform! I think that people in BC, like here in the U.S., will appreciate the fact that there are politicians out there that truly want to serve the people. I'm very much into politics and was having a discussion about this very issue with my mother just the other day. We were discussing the fact that it never seems to make a difference who we elect because, inevitably, it seems they end up doing the bidding of some special interest group, friend, business partner, etc. instead of what they've promised the people who elected them and that they represent. We both agreed that it should not be this way and that it would be nice if they were obligated to perform up to the people's standards or be 'fired' by the people (rather than the ridiculous impeachment process we have that obviously is dependent on yet other politicians to do). Best of luck to you, Mike! I think you'd make a great representative of the people of BC!!
