Is anyone familiar with this song? It was sung by the band UGLY KID JOE. The first time I heard this song it really caught my attention. I did identify also that it's all about a father and son relationship. True indeed. As I go along with the lyrics, the words really touches me. But what really bothers me is the title of the song. Why it is Cats in the Cradle? Can somebody share your idea. If you haven't acquainted with this song, if you have time listen to it. It's really nice. Anyway here's the lyrics

1. My child arrived just the other day,
Came to the world in the usual way
But there were planes to catch and bills to pay
He learned to walk while I was away
He was talkin' fore' I knew it
And as he grew he said
"I'm gonna be like you Dad"
"You know I'm gonna be like you

Chorus: And the cats in the cradle in the silver spoon
little blue boy and the man on the moon
"When you comin home?"
"Son I don't know when, well get together then. you know well have a good time then"

2. Well, my son turned ten just the other day
He said"Thanks for the ball dad, come on let's play could you teach me to throw?" I said not today got a lot to do
He said "That's okay" And he walked away and he smiled and he said "You know, I'm gonna be like him, yeah, You know Im gonna be like him" (CHORUS)

3. Well he came from college just the other day
So much like a man I just had to say
"I;m proud of you, could you sit for a while?"
He shook his head and he said with a smile
"What I'd really like dad is to borrow the car keys.
see you later, can I have them please? (CHORUS)

4. I've long since retired, my son's moved away
I called him up just the other day
"I'd like to see you if you don't mind"
he said "I'd love to Dad if I could find the time"
"You see my new job's a hassle and the kids have the flu
But it's sure nice talkin to you Dad, it's been sure nice talkin to you"
As I hung up the phone it occurred to me, He'd grown up just like me, My boy was just like me (yeah, yeah, yeah) (CHORUS)

So if you hear this song already, why, why on earth it's entitled this way, "CATS IN THE CRADLE"?

I believe that this song was named after the story cats in the cradle. you know most parents sit down and read to their children, or atleast should. anyway, i think its b/c he never had time to sit down to read or pay attention to his child. seems to me like he was in the service of some kind...

Great question...

Harry Chapin sang the song first, I think he also wrote it. Silver spoon refers to "born with a silver spoon in his mouth", a rich kid who never has to worry about anything. Cat's Cradle is a string game where you weave a big loop of string between your hands, it's complicated and I've never learned it properly.

I think the title refers to the complexity of life. Remember, though, he regrets the example he set for his son and all that he missed by being too busy in the "cat's cradle" of life.

Yes it's Harry Chapin originally done this but I like Ugly Kid Joe version...I really like this song. i just understand how a father don't have much time for his son but I just can't get it why the title has to be that way...hehehehhe....Thanks anyway

It's a Harry Chapin song, and he's basically saying that we should try to spend time with our loved ones because they are more important than working and gaining material possessions - and time passes so quickly. Ironically, his son grows up to be the same as he was, and now has no time for his father. The 'Cat's in the Cradle' reference is just a chorus, referring to nursery rhymes - and the way things were when his son was a baby. Sad.

Yeah you are very right. And yes Harry Chapin was the original one, but I like Uglu Kid Joe version better...hehehehhe

Songs don't always make sense. He's just singing about some different nursery rhymes and lullabies. I'm sure it made sense to him at the time, lol.
