A Sight I Thought I'd Never See... | | A little over a week ago, my hubby and I went out for a little while. It was a Friday night and we just didn't want to be stuck in the house so, we went out with no particular desitination. So, we were leaving the new open air mall that was pretty recently opened up in my area. We were checking on progress of the mall and, as we were leaving it, there was a tornado about a mile and a half or 2 miles in front of us. In fact, by our guesstimates, it was likely pretty close to our house. The hubby saw it form and I saw it mostly formed, getting bigger, speeding up, twisiting and moving to the left then just as suddenly as it was there, it fell apart and was gone. But, make no mistake about it. It was a tornado, it was huge, it moved unbelievably quick and if it was bigger and lasted longer, it would have caused severe damage. It is a sight I will never forget. Has anyone else ever seen a tornado with their own eyes and that close?

We do get them though. I have been close to one but didn't see it. The sky turned black, everything was dead still, then torrential RAIN and hail, then all the trees were pushed flat. Some say it was what they call a down-pressure something? I forget name...you guys will likely know. Even that was pretty scary. I had just arrived home on the bike. I have been caught in severe wx on bike in past too though, but that was the worst. Glad you guys were ok:)

cortjo73 (2203) | 4 months ago | I'm glad you were ok after what could have been something really bad. And, I have never heard of whatever that was! LOL! The weird thing about the tornado the hubby and I saw was that there were no indications that there was even the potential for a tornado. And, everything you ever read or hear about as far as the signs of tornado potential, didn't happen. It wasn't raining or hailing and, there wasn't the weird stillness. But, it did happen. I do think the lack of all of those other signs may have been the reason it didn't get strong enough to sustain itself for more than about 15 or so seconds, or do any damage.

| | 2. tinkerick (807) | 4 months ago | Never that close. I've seen them far away at least once as a kid. I have had a couple of odd encounters around them though. I was at a friend's house on the other side of our neighborhood when we heard the tornado warnings. The wind had started picking up and it was getting dark. I hopped on my bike and headed home. Halfway there the wind picked up so hard that I literally took my feet off my pedals and let the wind push me! When I made it home my friends called me to make sure I made it ok. They said they saw a twister land not too far in front of me (I'm guessing a few miles). The other encounter was when I was at a 2-month summer camp. The girls were visiting the boys on their side of camp (a few miles away), when the tornado warnings started. Toward the late afternoon we saw a huge black (and I mean BLACK) line of clouds literally rolling across the sky. It looked like black waves heading in to crash on a beach. They had us in buildings for a while and then decided to put us in the lowest spot on the campus - a little sloped area by the lake called "The Cup". They made us lay down on towels for what seemed forever. But the cool thing was I looked at the lake and it was this beautiful mixture of blues and greens and sitting near the shore were three white swans. It was a very neat picture! Too bad I didn't have a camera at the time.

cortjo73 (2203) | 4 months ago | Wow! I would have been terrified during both of those moments! Back in the spring, we had about 4 or so hours of tornado warnings for my area and, I know what you mean about the sky being literally black and rolling like that. I can imagine the lake and the swans were probably really picturesque. Sort of beauty in chaos.

| | 3. gitfiddleplayer (2006) | 4 months ago | I have, I grew up in tornado alley (Oklahoma) and when I was a kid we saw one come right for our house, it skipped over a field and tore the shed roof off, we waited for the roof to slam into our house but it landed in the field behind us. It was pretty scary because even though we were in our house we still didn't feel safe.

cortjo73 (2203) | 4 months ago | Wow! That must have been terrifying. And, having seen the end result of a tornado and what it can do to a house from footage on the news after tornadoes hit, I can understand why you wouldn't feel safe even though you were in your house. You were lucky that roof missed your house! I'm glad you survived it!

cortjo73 (2203) | 4 months ago | Grandpa Bob, I will look forward to reading your tornado chasing story! In fact, once the tornado the hubby and I saw dispersed, we went driving around in search of more! LOL! Lunacy! LOL!

| | 4. webeishere (9995) | 4 months ago | We had one go up and down from the clouds very near my home a few years ago. I lost a few large branches from my red Maple and the neighbor had a 50 foot pine tree pulled up from the sopil about 2 feet slightly damaging his roof. All told for a 4 mile stretch from my house and South there were over 1,000 trees ripped from the ground due to this tornado and straight line winds later. I've seen a few from very close in my lifetime actually. I have a discussion or two about a recent one that hit a few miles from my home May 25th I think as well. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB!!~

cortjo73 (2203) | 4 months ago | Yikes! I couldn't live where you live. We get threats several times every year in my area and, that is bad enough. And, we did have a wind so bad, which we aren't even sure it may not have been a mini twister, that knocked a tree down in my backyard and hit my house. It was a huge oak tree and, we were fortunate because the way the tree hit the house at first actually broke a branch and knocked the tree away a little. It still did some damage to my house but, if that branch hadn't broken and knocked it away from my house a little, it might have crashed into my bedroom decapitating my hubby and I as we slept in our bed. It happened 7 years ago on Mother's Day. No one knows if it was a mini twister or just a really bad wind gust but, we were not the only ones in my subdivision that day with tree damage to our house from that wind. I'll be looking for that discussion about the tornado in your area and the one you chased. And, I am glad that you have stayed safe!

cortjo73 (2203) | 4 months ago | LOL! It was scary! But, also fascinating! LOL! And, I can't imagine that hiding in a gas station bathroom was fun! Ewwww! LOL! I'm glad that you were safe though! And, you try to keep away from them too! I wouldn't want you missing BB10 either! Among other things! Like Savanna and the rest of your family!

cortjo73 (2203) | 4 months ago | I'm glad you weren't hurt! And, if you look above a little, in response to Grandpa Bob's response, I talk about a tree that was knocked down by either a mini twister or a really bad wind burst, that hit my house. Those trees and wind! Sheesh! LOL!

| | 7. greenglitterturtle (1435) | 4 months ago | wow, i am fascinated by tornadoes at a safe distance of course. i have videos of them. the closest i've come to seeing one was a dust devil that formed in front of my eyes and spun a little, then dissolved. i would love to see a tornado in person. without no one getting hurt or property damage.

cortjo73 (2203) | 4 months ago | I have to admit...it was cool! LOL! Scary as heck and, if it got any closer, I might have had to change my shorts but, it was cool nonetheless! LOL! And, of course, I think the thing that kept it at cool instead of traumatizing was the fact that it didn't do any damage. So, I completely know where you are coming from. They are fascinating. They are a crazy, terrifying, but fascinating act of nature and, they can make a person very curious.

| | 8. Natrak (1408) | 4 months ago | Hi cortjo, that must have been fascinating sight. I remember you started a discussion about that storm and tornado recently, so I guess you are accustomed to it, nevertheless, seeing tornado forming, is unforgettable. I haven't seen anything like that, we don't have tornadoes here, just rain storms, so I can only guess that sight like that will leave a person breathless, 'cause there ain't nothing like nature's wonders.
| |
| |
|
|
cortjo73 (2203) | 4 months ago | Hey Natrak! Yea, we get lots of tornado threats around my area but, I have never seen any of them before. And the one the hubby and I saw wasn't expected. I don't think that people thought the conditions were right for it and, we haven't seen any reports of it either. I know other people on the road had to have seen it but, I think that, of those of us who saw it, none of us called in to report it! LOL! Probably because it didn't do any damage and was here and gone in such a short period of time. But, it was fascinating! Mind blowing! And, it did teach me a little something that, while I understood it and I have always had a healthy respect for the damage a tornado can cause and how quickly they do their damage, I never knew how very fast they move. That thing was hauling butt! So, when the news people say to get to a safe place, they mean it. You don't have time to think, breath or hesitate because they are not there one second and there the next and they move unbelievably quickly. And, you said it! There ain't nothing like nature's wonders. LOL!

|
cortjo73 (2203) | 4 months ago | It really was exciting! It was terrifying because until it just dissipated, we didn't know how big it was going to get and, until my hubby told me it was probably about a mile and a half or 2 miles from us, I thought it was much closer. And Thank You! I am glad nothing happened to my hubby and I, or anyone else! You take care too and have a great day!

cortjo73 (2203) | 4 months ago | I'm glad you weren't hurt by it. But, wasn't it a sight to behold? And, I bet you will never forget how rapidly it formed and moved. It really gives you respect for their power when you see one and how quickly they form and then how rapidly they move.
