I need advice on how to handle a very narrow-minded boyfriend!!! |
|
I've been seeing this guy a few weeks, and he has the opinion that some of the music I like (like AC/DC) is "negative" and that whenever we have a house together, I'm not to play it in the house. I don't say anything about the music he likes...in fact, when one of his favorite singers was in town, I even drove him up to the place to check out tickets. He says that the music he likes is positive and good, and music like the kind that AC/DC plays is bad for you. What should I do?

1. foxyfire33 (5754) | 4 months ago | You should break it of with him. If just a few weeks into a relationship he is already trying to control your music preferences, he's bad news and would probably become even more controlling as the relationship became even more serious. Just end it now, this guy is not worth your time. (I like AC/DC too by the way)

There is no reason that you have to like/dislike everything that your significant other does! Especially this early in a relationship, he should be trying to find the silver lining in your music, even if it is not something that he enjoys (NOT telling you what you can/cannot listen to). I personally don't necessarily like the lyrics of ac/dc music, but no one can convince me that they are not talented musicians!

halina23 (1125) | 4 months ago | How true....I don't like all types of music, but I can certainly appreciate the time and effort it took to make it....and a group that has sold over 40 million albums must be doing something good! My boyfriend springs this kind of stuff on me every so often- we had a major battle about my drinking beer from time to time, and let's just say I was not about to budge. Whatever happened to not trying to change the person you love? As Shakespeare would say "Let Us Not To the Marriage of True Minds Admit Impediments, Love is not Love that Alters where it Alteration Finds."

2. mscott (1182) | 4 months ago | Since it is early in the relationship it is probably good that you are finding these things out now. If you have small differences like these, and they are enough of an issue for it to cause you to seek out advice, then there are probably going to be other issues later on. Differences are fine but it doesn't seem that he is willing to accept yours while he expects you to accept his. It doesn't look good so maybe just get out while there are not a lot of deep attachments.

halina23 (1125) | 4 months ago | That is all true, and something that I was trying to tell him even last night. How come he can't accept what I like without calling it "devil music" or "negative"? I started telling him that he sounded like my parents!

3. Wizzywig (1120) | 4 months ago | When you say about having a house together, do you just mean when you are together or are you seriously thinking of moving in with him? I'd say,if its your house you listen to whatever you like and that he has no right whatsoever to be telling you otherwise. Nothing wrong with AC/DC.... negative?? in what way??? what kind of music does he like? It boils down to whether you want to be told what to do by him - is he that wonderful that you're prepared to accept it?

halina23 (1125) | 4 months ago | He prefers more "easygoing" music, like Willie Nelson or Neal Diamond. It's not that I can't appreciate that kind of music, even if it isn't my favorite necessarily, but I don't go telling him he can't play that music in our house someday! Thanks for your comment- someone is going to get a major chewing out!

5. spalladino (3268) | 4 months ago | At the very least this guy sounds opinionated and controlling. At the very worst a controlling person like this can also become an abuser. What he is telling you, very clearly, is that if the two of you live together you will not be an equal member of the household so you have to decide whether you want to accept being treated like that.
