I've heard a lot of singer and i think there's a lot of better singer in the Philippines if only given the chance to excel. some of them don't really have the proper training and yet they can win a lot of contests.

I believe that filipinos and filipinas are naturally a musical race. and most of them can already hold a tune. and so many are extremely talented. somehow it's just in their blood and gene pool. as compared to other races I just feel that they are more musical. perhaps some of it is the culture, perhaps some of it is just in-born.

Unfortunately as what other says filipino are great imitators. They think in order to penetrate the international industry of music one should imitate the famous ones. But I sure hope so that there will be some filipino who would win in american idol to prove that we are not imitators.

2. spoiledbrat802 (775) | 2 months ago | Being Pinoy myself, I would agree with you that there are a lot of good Filipino singers out there. But I just would like to point out that there's an ocean of a difference between a good singer and a good musical artist - and sadly that is what's been lacking in most Filipino singers. A lot of our singers are good imitators - Regine Velasquez for one has always tried (with no success) to imitate Mariah Carey's singing style. A lot of our singers copy the style of other foreign artists - which is very evident in the influx of Filipino RNB singers, Filipino pop singers and Filipino hiphop rappers. They copy the singing style, they copy the slang and diction, they even copy the clothes and bling-blings. Yes they're good, but who wants a good imitation when you can have the original? Who wants a "Mariah Carey wanna-be" when you can listen to the real Mariah instead? Among thousands of Filipino singers, only a handful can be called real Filipino musical artists - Ryan Cayabyab, Apo Hiking, Rey Valera, Rico Blanco of Rivermaya, Ely Buendia of Eraserheads, Raymund Marasigan of Sandwich, The Dawn, Gary Granada, Joey Ayala, Melody Del Mundo of Sugar Hiccup, Barbie Almalbis, Noel Cabangon of Buklod, and internationally recognized artists like Allan Pineda of Black Eyed Peas, Mutya Buena formerly of Sugababes, Armi Millare of Up Dharma Down and others like them. These are Pinoy artists who write their own music, who stamp the music they produce with their own unique identity, and who bravely put out music that can be truly called their own - not copied, but music they truly wrote. That's why Jasmine Trias and Ramielle Malubay didn't win American Idol - they lacked the originality and uniqueness that distinguishes a musical artist from a plain good singer. That also explains why Jasmine's album didn't do well outside of the Philippines. Good singers, even ones who win lots of contests, are a dime a dozen. Real Filipino artists come few and far between.

What I'm basically saying is that our singers, good as they are, have all the avenues that allow themselves to excel. The thing is, you can teach vocalization, you can teach how to play musical instruments, but you can't teach musical sensibilities, you're either born with it or not. It's not a question of whether they're given opportunities to excel, it's a question of whether they have what Simon Cowell often calls "the IT factor".

4. globaldoc2001 (4902) | 2 months ago | i really would agree to that, but i think i have a reason for this.i just hope i am right.among the other asian countries, the philippines stand out to be a colony of america before.it is the reason why filipinos can speak english better thanour neighboringcountries.as such, the filipino culture will be able to mix rhythm, beat, and lyrics that are more western and american.that is perhaps why our songs are very much similar to american songs.these result to better songs, producing better singers.
