 Have you used VLC Media Player, I should say that it is way ahead of Windows Media Player and I have never faced any CODEC problem till now...

I like it for the no frill functionality. I use it when I need to do transcription. I can keep pausing and replaying a particular line that is inaudible with easy shortcut keys.
But if you are talking about music and movies for entertainment... I much rather use other programs like RealPlayer or Windows Media Player.
Though VLC supposedly has most codecs, I think it pales in comparison to other players in the above aspects.
