How do you keep a cat from scratching furniture?  | |  Hi,
This is a real problem. Our cat really likes to scratch our furniture. She has a scratch box which she will use from time to time but it the furniture that she really loves. I am almost thinking that it is attention getting behavior. Now, I do not know how much more attention this cat could get. Any ideas?

| | | | | | 1.  jillbeth (2056) | 6 months ago |  I have a few suggestions:1.There is a bitter apple spray which some animals find repulsive, you might try getting some (from a pet store) and spraying the furniture with it.
2. Keep a squirt gun handy and spray her whenever she scratches where she isn't supposed to, or get a loud air horn and startle her with it.
3. Always praise her and give her attention when she IS scratching where she's supposed to. Positive reinforcement usually works better than negative, just as with kids!4. Some cats prefer to scratch on a particular type of surface, whether wood or upholstery. Provide her with a place to scratch that suits her preference, if she seems to have one. Cover her scratch box with upholstery fabric or give her a wooden box to scratch on.
Cats will usually do what they want, anyway. Good luck!
