What do you think of Prednisone? | | I have two kids with Ulcerative Colitis so we have had experience with the drug Prednisone. It worked somewhat for my son but there were problems with it. It took him a very long time to wean off (1 1/2 years), he had severe acne, mood swings, insomnia, depression, etc. He swears that he will never again go on Prednisone. My daughter does not want to go on it because she is afraid that she will have as bad of acne as her brother. Anybody else have experience with Prednisone?

I was put on a heavy dosage when diagnosed with Rhuematoid Arthirtis. Among the side effects were severe acne, you put on weight, and it does tend to have soem gastro intestinal effects as well. These tend to wear out once the drug is stopped or drastically reduced. I have been on a maintenance dose for over 7 years now. The long term side effects can include brittleness of the bones and there are more that I have read about.

Virgie60 (212) | 6 months ago | Yes my son was on a high dose and then tapered down. But everytime he would go down the symptoms would come back and then doseage was increased, and endless circle. It took almost 1 1/2 years for him to finally get off of it. They worried about his bones too and didn't want him to be on it for long.

However, I finally found a great gastro doctor and switched to Entocort. It is still a steroid, but it has a coating on it to only release when it hits the intestines. So much less of the steroid goes into the system, hence drastically less side effects. Definately worth asking the doctor about. Also, be careful with the bones on long term prednisone use. Talk to doc about maintaining bone health and get something prescribed for that. Also, many people, me included find that taking calcium pills helps a lot with diarrhea. Good luck and hope that helps, dealing with prednisone and IBD is not fun! Add me as a friend or PM if you like if you want more info.
